  1. I enjoyed Interstellar. It was loud alright, but not bothersome. As I left the theatre I heard a lady say "I couldn't hear what they were saying half the time!" and she was right. I was prepared for it, and got used to it. Some bold moves in the mixing. However, there were a couple of moments when the less than intelligble dialogue bothered me. In the scene where Michael Caine is dying in the hospital, with no big effects or music going on, and some critical plot points being delivered, the dialogue was so muddled I had to strain to figure it out. Inexplicable. Another movie goer had this to say at the end of the movie: "my leg's gone to sleep!". that's one long movie. Also saw Birdman. The dialogue was crisp and clean throughout, with a brilliant soundtrack. Different approach for sure.
  2. Hi Franky. How is the MKE-2 for under clothing placement? How is the cable for rubbing noise? This mic isn't mentioned much on this forum, so it would be useful to hear your experiences. I have an older hardwired MKE2 with the Kevlar cable and I found it was hard to hide under clothing because of the rubbing. I was wondering if the Gold model used a softer cable. I think the MKE2 sounds great, by the way.

    Birdman

I saw Birdman yesterday. A very challenging and fascinating movie. The sound design and soundtrack was superb. The dialogue, and there's some great dialogue, was crisp and detailed throughout. The score was brilliant. My wife and I are still talking about this movie. Check it out.
  4. Just watch out for the incompatible cable wiring for line ins to the transmitter (if you are using the unit this way). G3s need a different wiring than the G2. check this forum for details. Otherwise the 2 models work well together. menus are a bit different.
  5. Hey Jason (and Michael), I tried the coily externally on the pole and it works very well! I would never have thought about this technique. Another reason to love JW Sound.
  6. Same here in Ontario, Pascal. Productions are offering ridiculously low rates for Lifetime movies and the like, and indie features are off the map low. I've been turning them down and concentrating onTV, docs and corporates. Crew people are starting to leave Ottawa. Thank god I'm getting close to Wal Mart greeter age. Cleanup on aisle 3!
  7. Very scary looking dudes accompanying Darth. Imperial Storm Troopers?
  8. +1 on the PSC poles. I have the large one with the side exit XLR. very well built, nice and ridgid when extended. like any internally cabled pole, it can get noisy if you shake it around, especially at full extension. Great design and worlmanship.
  9. There is a previous thread about level setting on BM cameras. my experience: the newest firmware has meters showing. also, playback is now possible on camera (previously unavailable). the meters have -24 and -18 markings. I only used mic ins on camera, not line. headphone return was OK, just a bit low. I fed the pocket cam with a Sennheiser G2 at lowest mic level out via 1/8" cable. The bigger BM camera on the shoot was fed mic level via XLRs into the attached Wooden Camera gizmo. all good. recorded everything to a 633 as well. haven't heard anything back except that the cheque is in the mail. (very good client actually).
  10. I have a CMC3 which is the 12v phantom version. The Schoeps tech at the distributor in Canada told me that you can safely run them at 48v with no issues. I have used mine succesfully this way for years. they do draw more current however, but I've never noticed a difference. Most SD mixers and the 633 have the 12v PH switchable.
  11. re:Blackmagic pocket, cine camera settings. I just did 3 days with a BMC pocket and a BM cine camera. both cams had latest firmware with the meters available on screen. No problems feeding them, G2 to the pocket cam at mic level out to 1/8" mini, hardwired to the bigger one withWooden Camera XLR module attached. Mostly both cams rolling. mic level out of my 633 via XLR and -10 to AUX1 for G2. Simultaneous recording on 633. Client wanted primary audio on camera because of short edit timeline.Checked playback, sounded fine. This project was for a major corporation's web use. sort of a purposely low-fi affair, picture and soundwise (although the Blackmagics looked really good. This is becoming quite common, sort of a Youtube type feel. I've dubbed it "Hipstervision". Meters on both camera systems display Fsc digital scale. No marking for -20, but had -24 and -16. split the difference and played it safe level wise. Client got backup .WAV files. no TC on camera, of course, but all takes had dumb sticks. Charged accordingly. Everybody happy so far.
  12. no doubt I'm going to see one of these devices sooner, rather than later. I think it's a very clever idea. their site states clearly that it's for GoPros and that ilk. I noticed on one clip that they had used the onboard GoPro sound (I'm guessing). You probably could use it for a mic. Innovation is good. Duelling Rodcams: fun times!
  13. Sounds like a big gamble for Sony. The original Walkman was a huge, expensive gamble for them too, and look what happened with that. Is this a case of sizzle over steak? We'll see. Time to get those "High Def Audio" stickers out, stick 'em on my FP33 and raise my rates. I smell a Rube coming.
  14. It is possible to disarm the LR tracks independently. highlight the track with the select knob then use meter+select to disarm/arm it. It took me a couple of uses to realize you can do this. firmware revision? I have software version 1.02 build 27
  15. Put an RF on the key person and boom the others. At least you can take small breaks when the key person is talking, giving you a chance to pick up the next speech. +1 for a boom buddy or other stand mounted boom holder. 2 hours is too long. what media was in the camera? they must have had to reload at some point.
  16. sorry, typo: latches are good, not dood, dude.
  17. There's a video rental house here in Ottawa that uses the Nanuk cases and are very happy with them. They also use Pelican cases, but it seems they are switching over to Nanuks. The latches are very dood (no skinned knuckles/pinched fingers. The cases the rental company uses take a real shit kicking, and the Nanuks seem to be working out well. Nanuks are made near Montreal I think.
  18. I wonder how the director hopes to cut this thing together with such long takes. What were they talking about for that long over dinner? Pass the peas please? amateur night.
  19. What Portabrace bag is this, James? How do you like it?
  20. Just had a shoot with a travelling shot in a van. camera in back seat, me too. Very bumpy back country gravel road. driver's window had to be open for script reasons.only shooting one passenger at a time. my preferred method is Sanken COs-11s on the visors or a Schoeps from underneath. no go in this situation. wound up using a 416 from underneath. usually not my favourite for this situation, but it cut through the best. tons of low frequency for post to fix, but the voices were just fine. kind of liked there being just me and the cameraman in the back seat (both of us wore seatbelts). slated it myself. follow vehicle had Comtek feed run into vehicle's stereo system. no video feed. sound ruled this one.
  21. CBC's sound was fine. The first games were a bit rough audiowise, but today's final was very good. Watched it on over-the-air HD. No picture compression. looked great. didn't listen in surround though, stereo only.
  22. Here's a question: do digital cinema projectors in theatres work at 24fps or 23.98?
