I think it has to be done judiciously.  I haven't done it on my boom track, but adding digital gain to the headphone *output* was prone to audible clipping at levels that were unclipped in the recording.  That convinced me not to play with digital gain on other channels, but Bernie's report sounds promising.  I too sometimes run out of "regular" gain on my boom track on the Nomad, though this is largely due to using a mic that is not so sensitive.

have you tried the digital gain? -- im not sure how to do that buuut will check thee ol manual...

  3. So still a bit confused on what the best practices are if you have maxed out gain on an input (usually coming from a boom mic).  Just to summarize the only thing you can do on the Nomad is use the card limiters to add gain to the card tracks or see if another input is louder by chance?

I also noticed that you can also add digital gain to analog inputs. Maybe there is a more up to date thread Im missing?

If you haven't yet, see my post on these alternate Lemo style connectors:

Thanks for sharing John. Would you and anyone else mind taking a photo of the tools you use to add a new or repair a LEMO connector? I just had talent sit on a connector that also had a microdot adaptor.  Seems like those are more susceptible to damage.

The MKH50 and 60 are terrific mics, but I think they're unpredictable in terms of how close you can get to the performer and how bad the acoustics are. The 50 has been my go-to mic for years for situations like this, but I'll generally try to back it up with wireless lavs depending on the circumstances.

Im kind of a huge fan of digging up old these older posts to get that much further clarification on issues like these. Marc, I was interested in your comment... Are you saying that you use lavs because they reduce echo better than MKH 50?

  6. Sooo my AA battery pack is too loose inside the Nomad and not powering the unit.

If I take off the cover and press it in harder it does power the unit, so there just needs to be something wedged in there to keep that pressure up.

I tried a nickel and that worked but was wondering if thats a bad idea?

    Maybe cardboard? Any suggestions?

Dont really feel like sending it in.
