  1. Since we're on the topic of "sound-related" libations, I thought I'd plug this small wine-maker in California's Central Coast: http://fieldrecordingswine.com
  2. Cool hat! Need to order something from you guys!
  3. I use a Rycote Softie (intended for a MKH60: 21/22 mm opening). It fits the Schoeps perfectly IF you have the Cut-1 screwed on.
  4. Ooops... Looks like I overlooked it on the 695 page, under "The Contract". Thanks Boomoperator!
  5. Hello All, I'm trying to find an online chart that specifies wages for Sound Dept. under each agreement and Tier level. I've placed a call to Local 695, and they are mailing me the literature... but I was hoping there was an online resource I could use. Thank you! 6. Hello All, I may be doing a 5 day ENG job where the client wants audio cassettes (program on left, TC on right) for transcription. The client says they'd consider MP3 format as well. What is the standard operating procedure for making and delivering audio cassettes and/or non-linear files for transcription? It is my understanding, that in order to make a transcription cassette, one must play back the master camera tape (either through a deck or the camera) and output audio/TC into a cassette recorder. Is there a way to bypass this step altogether by using a non-linear recorder while shooting (744T in my case)? I would guess that if camera and sound's TC match, the only step at the end of the day would be to burn a disc, or FTP the files. Any advice from Mixers who do this on a regular basis? Thanks! -Lee Ascher Los Angeles, CA
  7. Hello All, Does anyone know the length of time an employer (in California) has to pay an independent contractor once a job is complete? I was always told it was 30 days, but I'd love to find a link online that defines this. Thanks! Lee Ascher
  8. Hello Paul, I did a 5 day shoot with the Red back in January. Here were my findings: First off, there is no gain control on the camera for line level signals. I only fed a stereo mix to the camera with a standard beta-snake cable (with XLR to TA3 adapters). I had to use the Stereo Out fader on my mixer to set a proper -20 dB reference tone. Mono mix and isos were recorded to my 744T and Boom Recorder. If you're sending audio with wireless hops at mic level, you may have a bit more control from the camera menus and/or receivers. In January, the Red still couldn't be slaved to TC. The TC I/O was output only. You may want to see if recent a firmware upgrade has changed this. On my particular project, I ignored camera's TC and just jammed the slate from the recorder (23.976). The editor used FCP and had no problem syncing my files. After the shoot, someone told me about this cool breakout box for the Red, which eliminates the need for XLR to TA3 adapter cables. Check it out: http://www.toys4red.com Also, here is a pretty popular Red newsgroup: http://www.reduser.net Best of luck! -Lee Ascher Los Angeles, CA
  9. Here's another odd-ball request: Does anyone know where to find the molding that protects the edges of sound cart shelves. I've seen it mostly on PSC carts, and it's usually gray or black in color. Does this stuff have a name? Some people have referred me to auto part stores and boat stores, but I've come up empty handed. Any help? Thanks! Lee Ascher Los Angeles, CA
  10. Tom, Thanks for the info. I usually cold call productions from the Production Weekly and Production Alert when I have time, but very rarely do I ever get interviews from these efforts. Does this newsletter have any different info than the Production Weekly?
  11. To my L.A. based Sound Mixer colleagues: Has anyone successfully gotten jobs from the "Find Film Work" newsletter offered on the IATSE 695 website? Just curious if it's worth the $7/month. Thank you. Lee Ascher Los Angeles
  12. Hello Richard, Thanks for referring me Rackman, but even they did not have what I was looking for. I was trying configure my Boom Recorder rig into a rack case, similar to John Pritchett's Metacorder rig featured on Gotham Sound's page: http://www.gothamsound.com/main.shtml?page=pritchett The main difference is that I wanted to use my SKB X case, which is more shallow than a standard rack case, but fits perfectly on the top shelf of my Magliner cart. Oh well... back to the drawing board! -Lee
  13. Hello, Does anyone know where to find a sliding rack shelf that will fit inside a shallow (10" depth) rack case (i.e. SKB "X" case) ? Thank you! Lee Ascher Los Angeles, CA
  14. Philip, Yes, the DVD-RAM drive is being bus powered, and I do use the SD Firewire filter. Come to think of it, I have seen the the EXT/INT POWER graphic switch from INT to EXT, and heard the machine "beep" when walkies are being used in close proximity. Luckily, it's never ruined any takes on the INT hard drive. It sounds like my DVD-RAM drive issue could be related to walkie RF interference affecting the DC power circuit. -Lee
  15. I use my SD DVD-RAM drive to mirror recordings from the 744T. One night while working on the process trailer, I noticed every time I called "Speed" into the walkie, my 744T would beep, and I'd get a message that said, "EXT Drive Offline". The graphic that showed the available space on the DVD-RAM disappeared, and I'd have to re-boot the recorder to get my DVD-RAM back online. I experienced this again when a P.A. walked past my cart, talking into his walkie. So it seems that my 744T/DVD-RAM drive "hiccups" every time there is a walkie-talkie transmission at close range. Has anyone else experienced this? Lee Ascher Los Angeles, CA
