  1. This is not exactly the topic from above but since I see that LarryF has been here, I'll go ahead and ask it: Would Lectrosonics Srcs in a PSC rf 6 pack or similar rf multi type situation have similar range to a venue? Is one method of antenna combining (maybe wrong word here) more efficient than the other?

Here's my situation: I have a friend soundmixer whom I work with often who gets amazing range from his venue 1 and passive sharkfins.  I want to emulate his system and success but I have a PSC 6 pack.  Should that work as well if all other parts of the system are equal?

  2. Its not as important now that the payroll compaies have online timecards but new utilities should know about timecard buddy. I stll use it occasionally. Also they should keep a simple mp3 player on their phones for those "just get the utility to do the playback" days.

Most of the playback mixer goto-s here in NY use control surfaces.  One just uses a mouse!

My 2 cents is that a control surface is great, just make sure you spend a little time to make sure it's compatible and reliable.  A lot of them are DC powered, or even USB bus powered.

A simple control surface is an option.  Im a little concerned about dependability in a pinch with a more complicated one. One middle of the night when...maybe there was drink and overthinking, I bought an Avid S1 that I cant even keep running in my tiny home studio.  That thing is way overkill.

For recent movies I built up bespoke hybrid playback/record rigs that reflected the exact needs of those productions.  One was based on a MOTU 828ES, the other on a Focusrite 18i20.  In one case I had a small Yamaha mixer as a speaker controller, in the other I did that via the level controls on the ADAC.   The two ADACs got the jobs done but I ...

That's good real world critique. Thanks!

  4. A question for those of you who do music playback on set: Do you use a mixer or controller in conjuction with your DAW and interface? If so, what one?  Ive been looking for the perfect solution for a small playback cart that would have enough busses to feed mains, a potential thumper, and 2 discreet earwig transmitters from DAW and VOG.  I would love to find an analog solution that takes dc power and has enough outputs to do that without being giant...but maybe a controller would be sufficient and stable enough. What do you think?

  5. Hi all, reviving this topic.

I'm also building a cart (out of all this slightly older sound gear) where I hope to keep the brains of the cart self contained in a removable Mixercage.  I also talked to Ron at PSC and have a PSC triple play in the mixer cage.  2 of the triple play inputs are fed by 2 4-pin full sized xlr outs of a PSC cart power II and one goes to an empty np-7 cup inside the cage for when it leaves the cart.  The cart power II has PSC LiFe battery backup.  In the Mixercage is SD 788t, PSC 6 pack, Comtek bst 75-216, and Lectro T4 IFB.

The eventual BlackMagic monitors, venue and extra comtek will run directly from the 4 pin outs of the cart power II.

I took a rough draft of this cart out to work on Friday and it seemed to go ok, although I noticed that the 788, venue, and single Marshall monitor I was using got hot pretty quickly.  I'm still working out how to test and calculate Amp draw, so there could be a problem there or it could just be normal for older gear. Still troubleshooting.  Anyone have any opinions on what I might be doing right or wrong?

It's another issue but I'm also troubleshooting RF.  Just ordered a scanner to see what kind if RF spray might be happening in that little box.

real good if you want to work for 4 to 500 per day with gear on a movie. There is other work too but the market is maturing at a glacial pace. I watched the same thing play out in Austin Texas during the late 80's and 90's.

Many of the struggling legacy Oklahoma crew members are having trouble getting the right pay and there is a resistance to any new blood. The crew we have fought  hard to establish themselves here. I am a relative new comer to OKC and that a was 10 years ago. One of the other local sound mixers will not even answer my phone calls. The other's really keep their distance.

I recently finished a movie with one of the other mixers as a boom op and he was great. Not very often is work as rewarding as that movie. It's been a long time coming. Looking forward to more collaboration but I am not holding my breath.

Too often freelancers start to think they own one market or another and get away with it to a degree, it always leads to destructive paranoid thinking.

I'm sorry that  such a small market is divisive instead of supportive, but I guess I kind of understand.  I'm also in a relatively busy but small market.  I hope it gets bigger and better and you get more sweet features.

Make a microphone boom into a coax connection, so one of our antenae could be high in the air.

    My idea, your patent.

Maybe this won't make any sense, but someone invent "coily cable coax" so it can all be contained in the antenna mast, like in a boom pole.

...and I LOVED Paint Your Wagon, not sure how many times I stayed up to watch it on late night TV as a kid.

  8. JonG keep us posted on your results with the new 6 pack.  I also just bought one but I haven't decided what blocks to put in it or what antennas to use. I have been quite frustrated this week with wireless.  I was shooting this week at a house where there was RF noise through all of my block 21 and 24 and most of my block 22.  Sharkfins as opposed to dipoles helped on the block 22 (21 and 22 in a venue) but the others were unusable. I am about to buy 3 new SR somethings for the 6 pack and don't want to make choices that will continue to be frustrating.  I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to antenna distribution and characteristics and am trying to learn more.

  9. I will put in the female two cents:  I'm sure it isn't intentionally sexist and I would certainly (and have not) let air conditioning keep me from working in the studio, but I do believe that many women do feel temperature differently than men.  That said, I have worked in some production settings that were kept so cold that even the thought of going to work in them made me depressed.
