  1. I've worked with a couple operators who did this and it sounded great and nobody complained. Assuming the mix doesn't suffer, why work harder than you have to.
  2. Hey guys, was just tallying up my hours reported on the motion picture health site under recent contributions and I saw that next to some of my hours reported it says (L). Anyone know what this means? I couldn't find anything on the site.
  3. Chris Harris, why do you say that?
  4. Thanks everyone for the advice and replies, to the owners of the VDB internals, where is the xlr on the bottom of the pole, at the base or 90 coming out of the side? Mine is an older model I think, the locks are fine
  5. Thanks guys. Badger I have a similar problem with the collapsing, only about an inch or so. I know that they are a French company and the parts aren't quite as readily avaliable as some of the other companies, so I'm wondering which sound house I should take it to for the service. I guess ill just call around
  6. I am currently using a 16' externally cabled vdb boompole and it works great, I'm just sick of the added time and effort it takes managing the external cable. My question is, has anyone had any experience working with a similar pole but internally coiled? I don't know if I should go ahead and make the modification or not because every vdb I have used was external. If so how was the handling noise and did you experience a lot of cable jumble from turning the pole? I eventually want to switch to a loon 16' internal coil but I don't have the $ right now. Maybe I should just hold off until I do and have 2 diff poles. Thanks
  7. Hey Everyone, My name is Austin Hunter and I am a 21 year old Utility/Boom Operator looking for work in the greater Los Angeles area. I'm a long time reader semi-first time poster here on JW sound. I am currently available for work, so I just thought I would try and drop a line here since it seems like the creme of the crop as far as production audio goes frequents this website. I have been doing production audio(almost entirely boom and utility) for a little over two years. I am a member in good standing of IATSE local 695. I do have a small eng kit, although I prefer to work for an experienced mixer in hopes of learning something new and bettering my understanding for the craft. Even if that means sacrificing my day rate a bit! If anyone has any advice, or would be willing to bring me on set just to meet in person, I would be greatful. Some of the mixers I work with are Mary Jo Devenney, James Dehr, Andy Rovins, and Randy Lawson. Im sure some of the more seasoned LA mixers are familiar with these names just in case you would like to call for a reference. Once again, any advice would be appreciated! Thanks! 8. ya i just saw it for the first time this afternoon and thought it was funny and worthy of a post
  9. What a discouraging article/topic for someone just starting out in the business. Although I suppose there is always a market for excellence.
  10. Hey guys, thanks for all of the posts and sorry about the late reply. I was unable to hear the audio playback from the red epic, as stated above, i think because of a firmware update or lack there of. I could see the meters on the camera and had attenuated down to mic level on my 302 but was still worried about the actual sound the camera was getting. I ended up just using splitters to run it to camera as well as my Tascam DR-100 just to be safe.
  11. Thanks for the replies, I was wondering more about attenuation/ level problems going from the 302 to the camera. I am not very experienced in device comparability and attenuation etc.
  12. I am a fairly green soundie, who usually works as boom or utility. Tomorrow I will be mixing some second unit coverage on the show I am currently on. I will be using a SD 302 and 2 lectros, and a boom. I'm going directly to camera via beta snake and I have never recorded straight to camera like this before. I guess I'm just looking for any advice in general and potential problems this setup could present. Thankyou
  13. Old school- my thoughts exactly! I have been doing production sound for about a year, mostly boom and utility but am always looking for opportunities like this one to broaden my knowledge and get some experience as a mixer in a practical setting for my skill level. I recently just bought the 302 and two VHF lectros so it sounds perfect. I sent him an email but never heard back =[
