  1. Hey all, Apologies for resurrecting this old thread. I will be working with a HS-P82 one a three week shoot (with the fader pack) and I am trying to gather some info before-hand. It seems like a decent unit for the price but I am very sceptical about the limiters being post AD. Could users comment on them? All happy with the pres? That big display looks quite power hungry. Any comments on power consumption? Lastly, I am thinking about renting a unit for 2-3 days. Are any units been reported of having issues? Anything specific to look out for? Any help would be appreciated! Cheers in advance.

  3. Just adding to this email to add that Channel 38 G3s had major issues in the Abruzzo area of Italy. Scanning new frequencies changed from part of a house to a different one! Very mountainous area as well. Would that fact play any specific role? I had a pair of the 120Mhz bandwith of the Audio Wireless radio systems as well. I had issues with them as well.
  4. Hey Peter I will be over there for a UK production, not at all involved with a German TV broadcaster or co-produced by a German company. Needless to say, I am more than happy to pay for the license (how much does it go for really?) but if I am not legally obliged then I cannot say I exactly mind that Do you yourself use radio mics around the 470-710 region? If so, is there a spectrum that you find using more often?
  5. Poor aliens!.... Don't get me wrong, the sound was great but the content shouldn't intrigue them, at least if they are of higher intelligence Sure, I understand this Pindrop. Still, I am just trying to find whether anyone had success with anything between channels 38 and 43.
  6. Has anyone successfully used channel 38 to 43 around the Frankfurt area in Germany? I am looking at what's what there now and according to Olle Sjostrom's "Ultimate Wireless Frequency List" chart and: Channel 38 is reserved for Astronomy but it seems that the two observatories stated in the IPS List (the Effelsberg Observatory - South west of Bonn and the Tremsdorf Observatory - at the south of Potsdam) are quite far off. I understand the 710-790Mhz is the way to go to Germany, but I am just double checking whether anyone has has any success with anything around Channels 38 to 43. I might create a separate posting for this one if that's alright with you all.
  7. Just to add to this list the fact that I used Channel 38 and 39 successfully in: Dubrovnik, Croatia The Algarve are, Portugal Umbria, Italy I can say that I had no problems whatsoever and loads of "clear" frequencies after scanning!
  8. Bril. Thanks Justin, makes perfect sense now.
  9. Hey all I need longer cables for my four G3 Rx units to replace the stock flimsy ones, plus it would be great if I got them to be longer in order to easily sit in the front side pouches of my petrol bag. Here is where I need some advice: The stock G3 mini jack to XLR cables are wired to mic level. I am using the G3s with a SD552, going to mic level and I never really had any problems. I am assuming that it is the same case with the transmitter inputs and can be wired to line. Would this be correct? If that would be the case, would there be any benefits it be any better if the new cables are wired to line? Also, perhaps this is a daft question, but would starquad cables make any difference in this case?
  10. Unfortunately not. I got the 600Mhz - 660Mhz ones. I'll be shooting there tomorrow so I will post the outcomes for "forum posterity". I am still using that PEGZ3 bag that I got from you about a year ago. Bad for the back but cracking piece of kit when you run and gunning and you need a lot in one place.
  11. Many thanks for the replies all. Of course you're absolutely right about the regional differences. I will be shooting in Umbria. It seems that Ch38 is locked for Astronomy on a 10-mile radius. But from a quick search there is not a lot of Astronomy going on around there. I will have a better look tomorrow morning. I have with me four Audio Wireless, 3 x Micron in Ch69 just in case everything else fails and a couple of G3 (which the go up to and almost to ch43).
  12. Has anyone had any recent radio mic experience in Italy? If so, did channel 38 bid well at all? Thanks!
  13. Hey all, I was wondering if anyone might have any urban New Delhi atmos? I am interested in high quality stereo recordings only, if the price is right. I am looking for side street (not at all traffic busy) morning, afternoon and night atmos. Some locals random chatter, street kids chatter would be a bonus. Message if you have something at hand. Thanks!
  14. Cheers for that Malcolm. I've been thinking about adding a couple more NP1s and I will definitely give these a try. Hawk-Woods is definitely a great port of contact.
  15. Hey all Currently, I have paired the R4-Pro to an SD442, using the pre-fader directs outs, while saving ££££s for a 664. This setup gives me the ability of being able to have my iso tracks and send a different mix to a camera (and/ or an Olympus LS10 as a backup, using the mini jack mix out outs) separating by panning the boom and the radio mics. NP1 batteries work like a treat and I get about 6 hours powering both units of the Hawk-wooks distro NP1 cup. To be honest with you all, although I did slag the unit a lot, I now thing that the R4-Pro is not that bad a recorder at all. It's been solid to me and I never run to any problems. It's definitely not a production sound mixer, I don't believe it was advertised as such, so it should be considered for this job. If anyone is interested, my negative points about the R4-Pro are: colour chips away easily, no recording matrix (so you might end up having to record blank tracks in order to avoid repatching cables and going to the menu to change the recording setup), no pan control on the monitoring section (it is fixed to L R L R). When I wasn't using a mixer with it, or if sometimes I had to bypass the mixer for whatever reason, I had an issue with the absence low cut filters, but I found that there is one, in the "Effects" section of the mixer, in the Noise Gate option (the user can bypass the noise gate and only use the filter). After, using it for almost two years now I would be more than happy to keep the recorder as a back up unit, while purchasing a solid mixer/ recorder and relieve some strain on my back. I really didn't know a lot when I wrote the initial posting, and I was a bit overwhelmed with the amount of info I had to take. Since then, and with the help of this forum, I am holding the stick and I am getting better sound every time I am on set.
  16. Bril, thanks for that Rick. If that is the case, I'll defo pass this on to the chap I purchased the cables from. In my opinion paying $92 (£25+VAT) for two 30cm cables that I have to re-solder myself is a bit too much.
  17. The SD was firmware 5.2. I'll make tests tomorrow with a different unit and see what's what. VM I am not sure I am indeed "misunderstanding the alignment goal : maximising the dynamic range of the audio chain." 1. I initially had the SD442 TA3 outs at line level, 2. The TA3 to mini jack cables were wired at line level (no grounding at tip). 3. I am using G3s that accept line level At this setup there was extreme hiss coming out of the G3 receivers. Their output had to be at +12 in order to produce the ref tone I was sending from. I wouldn't like to send this feed to a camera, period. Subsequently: 1. I wrote the above to my initial posting. 2. People recommended to rewire the cables mic 3. I did that (no ground at ring) and changed the SD442 TA3 outs to Mic as well 4. No cigar. Phasing issues, super-ultra weak signal, no hiss is coming through cranked pres from camera/ mixing desk. Again, at all points the other connector was not grounded Oddity: while thinking that there might be an issue with my cable re-soldering from line to mic, I tried both - mic rewired - cables with the TA3 mix out of the 442, and: The sound was great, no phasing issues, strong signal and no hiss! The TA3 mix out is stereo though, coming down to a mono cable wired to mic. At this point I was baffled to bits. At any rate I will try the cables with another 442 tomorrow. If that doesn't help the I will revert them to line, ground the tip and see if the hiss has been removed.
  18. Is there a way to identify what kind firmware the unit is on?
  19. Yes Eric, you're absolutely right. I was reading the 442 manual yesterday after I switched off everything. Everything was running at mic level with the TA3 output. Definitely the cables are ok.
  20. Right...it is not the cables after all and it must be the 442 TA3 outs! I just thought to test the G3s with the mono mix TA3 out and there are no phasing issues at all. But still, outputting through the TA3 mono mix and a G3, the sound is far more prone to peaks while on transients, at least comparing to using the XLR outs. Bloody hell, what's happening here? I will record some examples and post them here for a second opinion (I should have done it already!)
  21. Many thanks for that Eric, much appreciated. I just checked and both 1 and 3 have shielding just fine. I'll just call the shop when they're next open and see what they say. Thanks for all the help today everyone!
  22. Hey Rasmus I thought that something might be wrong with the soldering but the mistake couldn't be the same for both cables. I just changed the ring to tip! It's a shame I don't have any XLRF to Senn mini jack to use the main XLR outs to go the Sennies and use the TA3s to go to the recorder. So, I need to somehow make this work for this two day shoot that I've got for tomorrow. High unlike on this bank holiday weekend but if there is anyone in the London area today that might be selling, XLRF to Senn mini jack I am will to nip over, buy and collect asap. On top of that, I could do with anything between two to six TA3F to XLRM asap as well!
  23. Help! I came back home opened up the casing and indeed it was wired on the longer tab. I took the soldering out swapped to the smaller tab and plugged in: In a way now it sounds worse than before: When I flip the 442 to Mic level (menu option -14 setting -20) the noise coming out of the signal is like placing a mic next to an A/C unit. When flipping the 442 back to line (but now the cables are wired to mic), the hiss is not there but I need to crank my mixing desk pres (were I am using to test this as I don't have the camera with me) several dBs higher than my -10dB and the sound has changed and/ or some kind of phasing issue has been introduced (low freqs are gone and there are sharp peaks somewhere in the high-mids area). Again, I started off having the signal quite high on the transmitters but obviously some clipping came up. I took them down all the way to -39dB and now I really need to crank mic pre in order to get a useable level. To sum it up in my head and type it: Changing the cables to tip (mic level) took out the hiss, now I've got a phase issue and the case with the levels hasn't really changed. But instead of cranking the G3s, I need to get a lot of gain out of the camera. So Rick, If I should revert back to ring (line level) how to I connect the Tip to the Shield do I split the shield from the core and solder some on the tip or should I join the tip and the shied together?
  24. Really Marc?!!!? Should I assume that you're feeding them mic level? Because bugger, this is otherwise a massive difference then! The 442 at my end is set to 0db, Tx G3 at 0dB and Rx G3 at +12dB. All cranked up but the mixer out (that can give another 6dB but then sends the G3s off the rails).
