  1. Good points... having everything available just appeals to my geek sense. Thanks.
  2. Since I am currently in cable-making readiness mode(have 200' of CA3PS26 coming from Trew and Neutricons from Markertek for my DIY breakaway cable system), I am also thinking about building a breakout for the DB-15 AES connector on my Nomad. I am looking at different cable options, this one looks quite good: http://www.gotham.ch...7_details&id=59 Has anyone yet built one of these? Managing the shields in the DB-15 looks like it will be the most "fun" part of the job... and the 15mm diameter of the cable presents a thought as to the shell of the DB-15.
  3. Mine was waiting for me when I got back from Cape Breton. Thanks Larry!
  4. Turns out the 3-cam shoot is now a single... and the other two cameras would have been 60D's. I did record some dynamic test dialog, and there looks to be room to add some more gain. Since I don't expect our new President to be off the charts level-wise, I will run it hotter(and limit the feed just in case!). Thanks guys, much appreciated.
  5. I had a chance to mess around with the 5D a little bit today. I ended up making a 20' TA5F > 3.5TRS cable that allows me to feed two channels of audio to the camera. At -35 output setting level looks good with one click on the 5D manual level control. The output from the internal speaker is extremely low, on headphones as well, wouldn't be able to hear low order hum or noise. Ended up mounting the camera's CF card to verify audio quality on my Mac... and the level was low there too. Double-system is looking better and better with this cam...
  6. 3.5mm mini Mono Out and Tape Out Output level setting on Nomad goes from +21 to -12dBu in 1dB steps. May have to make an XLR-3F > 3.5TRS... those outputs have settings of 0, -10, -35. Better yet a TA5F > 3.5TRS... that out can also be set to -35 and at least I don't have to worry about the cable coming out of the TA5F end... If the level is smacking that 5D input that may be a moot point... but that's why I'm testing tomorrow! Fortunately the video folks I work with have been "enlightened" after being burned a few times and having to come to me to try to save a track that, well, you know. Heard there might be some C300's coming in as well... Ken
  7. Got a 3-camera 5D shoot next week with the new President of the college I work at, just had one of the cameras in to hook it up to my Nomad and see what's doing. Cranking down the output level on the Tape Out down to -12 and having the 5D at it's lowest level seems the ticket... but will try it with something other than tone. Have to make a 3.5TS>3.5TRS with the signal going to ring/tip for both channels. Those be some scary jacks for audio... Going to feed audio to one, they'll be running shotguns on the others for reference and will be using a slate. Scenario sounds good... so far. Looks like I'll also have a rationale for getting a few ERX2TCD's for feeding them wirelessly down the road... Ken
  8. Last Friday 8/10/12... Songwriters In The Park in Red Bank NJ was cancelled due to weather, so the two slated artists, Willie Nile and Bruce Tunkel, were brought into the TV studio at my day gig at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, NJ. I multitracked, provided a scratch mix to one of the three iso cameras, and also provided monitor mixes for the musicians all from the Yamaha DM2000VCM. I'd been prodding to do this for awhile, weather was in my favor in this case. Sounded like the light went on for a few people about the possibilities... looking to do a lot more. Was a long day but was fruitful from a sound standpoint, and thinking about ways to do it better the next time.
  9. Gonna be in Cape Breton that day... damn! Really would have liked to have been able to make it though...
  10. Thanks Jack. I did see that warning in the product info from Neutrik but it's one of those things that can't be emphasized enough. Ready to fire up the Hakko!
  11. Getting ready to order parts to build a set of breakaway cables for my Nomad, much like Jack's setup. Going with Neutricon and the Remote Audio CA3PS26 cable, will be wiring to Remote Audio standard for compatibility. Thanks to all the contributors in this and other breakaway cable threads...
  12. Been there back in my days working for an Apple Specialist... was always hard to break the bad news... I'll probably upgrade my 2011 MBP when I get the MCE OptiBay and put a second 750GB hard drive in. That way I'll be able to clone the existing 10.7 install to the new drive and then upgrade the clone... will continue with 10.7 as a daily driver while trying out 10.8. My Mac Pro will stay right where it is at 10.6.8... not that it could go to 10.8 anyway(it's an upgraded 1,1) Used to be a bleeding-edge early adopter but now I wait a little while...
  13. I remember seeing Zaxcom at an AES years ago and was immediately intrigued by the onboard recording capability along what was coming in the future. I swore then that if I was ever able to upgrade my wireless kit(Vegas), I would be going with Zaxcom. Some years went by and I was able to get my first Zax gear, TRX900AA/STA100/RX900S/IFB100 mainly to use as a camera hop and return. Even though the setup I was using at the time required me to use a separate amp for return, I was glad I was ready for the future. I had lusted after the Deva and then Fusion for the longest time but there was no way the powers that be were going to drop $8K plus for either... was considering SD744 or 788T. Then along came the Nomad which tied everything together... it was like the stars aligning. From there what to buy was easy, a pair of TRX900AA and a QRX100Q. The features and sound quality always confirm my choice. Next items in my plan for world domination are a few ERX1TCD's... Just an aside, I assume this is the same Zaxcom that built the time base corrector unit in our old TV production system...
  14. This stuff looks interesting too: http://hawkingtech.c...8-antennas.html Cloud, have you been using the Zaxcom voting system? I've seen scant reference to it and am interested in more info since I have Nomad/IFB100/QRX100Q w/QIFB. K
  15. Heh heh, love it! I don't have the HDX codecs(even though they are a necessary upgrade path, another story entirely) at my day job, but we have 12 of the older VS4000's. Polycoms can be their own little universe... Seen lots of those Phoenix connectors in various videoconferencing setups on various equipment(Crestrons, automatic mic mixers, etc>). You'll have to terminate your I/O to the "devil box" if the client's not supplying it. They are pretty easy connectors to work with. The awesomeness of this cannot be understated!
  16. No-brainer deal, I'd say... I remember seeing this piece at an AES show a few years back and was impressed by the feature set.
  17. Posted by Steve Benson on Gearslutz: "Sad news for all audio engineers today - Al Grundy, easily the most knowledgeable man in North America on record cutting systems and the Neumann lathes in particular, and one of the main people responsible for keeping the professional vinyl record mastering systems in the USA running for the past 40 years - just passed away (from my understanding from complications from leukemia). He was 85. A true gentleman and a wealth of information - he will be missed!!!" http://www.gearslutz.com/board/mastering-forum/742649-rip-al-grundy.html#post8054846 I work with Kurt Hulit, the guy who was pretty much his right hand man for years keeping those systems running... a sad time for him certainly as well as for vinyl audio reproduction. RIP Al.

  19. In January 2011 I attended a joint meeting of the New York chapters of the AES, SMPTE, SBE, and IEEE BTS New York Chapter, at NBC Universal’s 30 Rock facility with regard to the at the time just signed into law CALM(Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation) Act, which was passed by a unanimous Congressional vote. In February 2012 I attended another joint meeting, also at 30 Rock, where the progress made over the previous year was discussed. AES member Robert Auld gives a synopsis here: http://www.aes.org/sections/ny/news12/news02_2012.pdf
  20. I remember reading somewhere the noise is due to the slate mic wiring's physical routing within the Nomad's internals.
