Hi gang, I'm trying to help out a crew I had the pleasure of working with recently by putting them in touch with a local South Korean sound mixer. I can't recommend these guys highly enough, they were amazing to work with, very laidback, unpretentious, humble and generally just a joy to be around. The job is sort of ENG/reality, essentially it's a branded doco, but very easy gig, generally no more than a boom and one wireless mic, occasionally a second, seperate recorder and a wireless scratch track to camera + TC. Hit me up if you're based in South Korea (or know of anyone who is) and I'll pass on some details. Thanks!

Hey gang, this was posted fairly recently on the FB group which I found extremely useful (thanks to Brian Reynolds), it's the Jands Shure wireless freq guide which shows what's going on in the major cities around Australia. Here's the original link, and the PDF attached is the same thing that I edited to include the rough Lectro blocks (down the bottom) Cheers, David Jands Shure Australian Frequency Guide.pdf

As I Hear It - Choosing the Right Microphone
David Chakman replied to David Chakman's topic in Equipment
Wow, apparently my searching skills need a little work, don't know how i missed all that! Amen to that Mark, its been some time since i have listened to any of the sample recordings but i do remember being very impressed with the sound of the Neumann KMR81i, from all the test it sounded like it had the best off axis rejection to me. - Chak- 4 replies

Here's a little something I found today while clearing out some old bookmarks - an in depth look at a few of the usual (and maybe not so usual) shotgun, hyper, super and cardioid suspects. Now, I did not write this and to be perfectly honest I don't know if I would agree with some of the stuff that this guys says (admittedly, he is a video guy apparently) but I thought it did make interesting reading and there are some decent samples recordings with each mic that he reviews. Apologies if this has been posted before, I did do a search (yes, on google) with no results, so here goes.. http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/right_mic_brockett.html Enjoy - Chak

Wish I could make it but I'm out of town for a while. Any one taking notes? I'd love to know how this goes.

If you can't fix it with gaffer tape, you're not using enough gaffer tape!

Hey cmassey, I have an almost identical set up at the moment and have been looking into different powering options. Do you power the whole lot off a single NP-1? If so, how long do you normally get out of a single battery? Oh, and what capacity is/are your NP-1s? Cheers, Chak

Just found this while clearing out some crap from my computer, it's from a job I did a couple of months ago. HMAS Warramunga: an Anzac class frigate of the Royal Australian Navy. We were shooting on it but unfortunately I didn't get a chance to take any snaps on board.

Oscar Sound Tech TL-40 Lav Pics & Sound Test
David Chakman replied to Ryan Farber's topic in Equipment
Any thoughts on the noise floor on these mics? The web site just says "Very low inherent noise" but does not actually list any figures. Has any one been able to notice much of a difference in the self noise of these to something like a COS-11? I was also looking at the MM-PSM-L which is listed as having "Equivalent Noise: 32 dba"; seems a little high to me for anything quiet/sensitive... Any thoughts or real world experiences?- 41 replies

I don't think anyone here would be all that surprised to see that this is the corner of the market that Rode gunning for... It's up to you to take it as you like; on one hand it does annoy me a little to know that SOME people do not take what I do for a living seriously, but then they are not really the folks/jobs that I want to be working with/doing anyway. On the other hand you get what you pay for and there are plenty of people who understand that and that's who I want to work with, just about guaranteed to be making something of quality that way, not something you try to forget that you worked on once it is all over. .02

Looks pretty nice Robert, I must admit I had an audible "Aww, cool!" moment when I figured out the flip-top lid section, great idea. What's the overhang on the dolly section for, boom poles to sit on with clasps perhaps?

Very interesting and a great find. Cheers!

Fraser Island?

Wow, cool! Looks like it will show a rough frequency response for each input, could be a handy little trick from time to time. Thanks for the vid olix

Yeah, fair point, but still a fair bit larger than a 788T + CL8, if your swinging a boom having something as large as an R-88 in the way might be a hassle. I am curious about the output routing of the 8 XLR outs, can they all be routed as separate buses or are they set to direct outs/stereo pairs or just mirrors of mix LR?

Not sure, but I think those knobs on top are actually just screws holding the battery door closed. Aside from that though, and not to rain on your parade, I don't think I would want to take it out in the bag too often, as far as I can see it's one of the largest and heaviest 5+ channel recorders out there. Not that this does not look like a pretty great machine, it's certainly piqued my interest, but I think it would be a lot more comfortable on a cart. If you do get to see it at IBC tomorrow, do tell us what your impressions are

Looks like a pretty nifty [not so] little mixer! How long before you have them in your rental armament John? I wouldn't mind taking one for a spin before committing to a purchase! Very exciting indeed.

Oh and another thing that just occurred to me; I have not seen any mention of pre-roll... any info?

I'm curious, and forgive me if this question has already been asked, but does it look like the 664 will interface with Wave Agent in Control mode? A big plus for me for the 788t, being able to alter file names and data during a take.

I saw a used MixPre go for $350 AUD on eBay here in Melbourne just the other day, roughly $365 USD... that's ebay though, I'm sure they were hoping for a bit more than that!

Yeah, I have been wanting to check one of these out too but as far as I can tell no one is stocking them here in Melbourne, Australia. Anyone know where I could take a look at one of these around Melb?

Just thought I'd add another mic into the mix (pardon the pun ), I just finished a shoot, mainly just internal interviews, where I hired a MKH 8060 to test out as I'm thinking of getting one for my own kit. I was totally blown away by it! Nice warm, clear tone with a subtle HF boost whitch makes it crisp without over doing it. It was also very quiet and noticeably smaller than a 416, it's also fairley light weight and fits easily into a rycote windjammer 3 kit. I found that it has an impressive reach for a such a short interference tube mic and a very tight pickup pattern for such a short mic which im guessing (I haven't had a chance to test this yet) would suit external shots and ENG work well. I have heard that some people experience high handling noise with this mic but I didn't have any issues with it after tuning on a HPF. Certainly a more expensive mic than a 416 but less than a CMIT, I would definitely recommend checking it out. I loved it and will be placing an order as soon as I have the cash. Just my $ .02 Chak
