Which mic? Plugging in a TX w/ digital modulation often creates a "buzz" or "hum" in a mic with inadequate RF shielding (often the case with older microphones). Sometimes a filtered cable works and sometimes it just doesn't work. I have an older Schoeps that was cured with a filtered cable and a friend's Neumann that seemingly can't be cured.

It was a neumann condenser mic. Which didn't have good RF shielding so I had to walk the transmitter away but the only way to get rid of the initial buzz was to plug it into my DPA shotgun and then plug it into the condenser weird how that's how it worked. So just curious so I could educate myself why it worked when I plugged into the DPA first.

my ZMT3 48V lets me adust the phantom power to 45V (five) max not 48V. Is that a typo within the ZMT or ...?

    from the manual:

This menu is where the phantom power is turned on and adjusted from. The ZMT3 Phantom has 5 user selectable power options:

OFF, 12V Phantom, 24V Phantom, 36V Phantom or 48V Phantom

Does anyone have an answer to this question? I was trying to plug a condenser mic into it and a couple times transmitter would create this buzz noise and the only way to make it stop happening was by plugging it into a shotgun mic...

  3. It's a little thing but maybe its an oversite, I hope this comes with an option to put on hooks for bag use, that way we can secure it to the bag straps.

I think I get your vibe here: Not so much the hassle of shipping, but concern that something will go wrong? I have that, but I've shipped back a bunch of stuff over the years, including mixers, mics, monitors, computers, and cameras. I pack it well, ship however the receiving party wants it (i.e.- some companies have had better experiences with one shipper over another), or FedEx or UPS. I insure the shipment, of course.

And you know, the companies in our space (ie- not the computer companies 🙂 ) have all done a great job over the years quickly and successfully fixing my equipment and safely & quickly returning it. Note, though that I haven't had to send microphones for the German spa treatment... I hear that can take a while. But for the usual-suspect US companies, they get that we bought their equipment to use in our craft and business.

So if #11 doesn't do it for you, give Zaxcom a ring and I'd bet they'll totally take care of you.

Thanks for your kind words. yea after the current gig I'm doing. if the cleaning doesn't do it then I'll just have to send it in. Appreciate you guys.

  5. I guess I should take my zaxcom in to be looked at but I just don't like the idea of shipping my mixer back. So three years later ha since my last post and I still have a nomad that doesn't keep time and date. I've changed the battery and it still resets after every power down. I've just gotten into the habit of keeping the mixer on throughout the day and just powering down during lunch or long breaks. Anyways just venting it's annoying that I've had this issue since my purchase and nothing seems to fix it.

Edit, are there any plastic loops on the bottom for a harness clip or just the 2 on top?

No I don't need loops on the bottom because it has a built in waste band/strap. But is does have molle if you pefer to use the bottom part of your harness instead of built in straps. Those straps can be tucked into the bag their is a compartment to hid them if you dont use them. I know for the ktek harness you would have to have bottom loops but for the others you can just use the bag strap it acts as the bottom half of the harness. Which I like cause then I add side pouches to the mole for my transmitters (Picture below).

Yes indeed. Good creative find there. Do tell. What is this bag?

Yes it has separate side bags but I cut the fabric dividing the main compartment to the side pocket. it was actually very easy and the stitching is done very well on the bag so you don't have to sew it after cutting it. It also has a lot of different pockets on the top so even though it's smaller I actually can store more things into this bag. and it has a built-in waste strap so all I needed from my harness is my shoulder strap so the bags fits firm against me.

They have discontinued this bag so it's getting harder to find there are other brands But this is the original brand the other ones do not seem to be built as durable.

Looks cool. What's the make/model? Do the sides of the bag open up so you can get to the card slot an whatnot?

Trying to post a photo of the side pocket but I keep getting a loading error I'll try later.

  8. Thought I would share my bag. Came across this tactical bag that is more compact  & lighter then my ktek and fits my nomad perfectly. Very happy with this setup it's like having a porta brace/ktek hybrid

Like Jose, we use the DPA 4018's with the side exit cable (MMP-ES), they sound fantastic & easy to rig - I've had 2 cables fail on me though, they're not contructed with fast paced filming in mind, need to be more robust imho

How would you mount them? Do you have any pictures?

So im looking into a good car mount low profile microphone. Lately I have been on shoots were we end up jumping in the car with talent and I am looking for a quick low profile solution. I know a few people are using the gooseneck DPA 4098.

But what about these other models from DPA? The 4080 and 4099 they seem like good options as well. Has anyone used these and what are your thoughts? Thanks sound fam!

the ktek bag is pretty heavy.

I really hope bag manufacturers will start making lighter bags. It sucks when only the bag weights almost as much as my one unit plus my bag

Exactly why I'm trying to create a different bag I have the k-tek bag, but bought a used porta brace bag and it's so much lighter. You help motivate me with your one unit. The only issues with that porta brace is storing extra things.. So I just found a non audio bag that might work. Just need to sew some velcro straps but it might work.... here is the beginning stage. Really like the molle design of things. I ran across this bag while trying to find pouches for harness storage since my compact porta brace didn't have pockets... This bag is the best of both worlds.... (hopefully)

Can't seem to post the photo on here I'll try again later.

But did you have the "trifecta" :P

Original idea for the boom mount from Scott Farr, they're MOLLE fast clips easily found on Amazon. Dipole mounting idea was taking off the mounting blocks and fastening to the edge of the bag using simple clips, or the MOLLE straps on the front of the bag. Overall clean looking, but also very RF clean even with the TX antenna so close to the SNA600.

I just got my molle clips today :) working on my bag little by little. Dipoles should be in next week.20161009_173606.png

I have all Zax and QRXs I would love to have something like the SL6. I love a neat and tidy bag! I agree the RX12 in theory is a great idea but QRXs and their versatility more fits my daily needs...

Honestly what I ended up doing was adding velctro to my receivers onto the nomad. Works perfectly didn't have to spend more money on brackets and no added weight!

Just wanted to do a little followup on my K-Tek Harness. I've been using it for quite a while now and I'm still loving it. The rigid spine has been amazing for my back. I've also recently been taking advantage of the MOLLE webbing that is stitched into the harness. I wanted to avoid having to bring a backpack with me while working, so I sourced some pouches from Maxpedition.

    IMG_4312.JPG

I use the upper middle pouch for wet weather gear and/or spare XLR. The two square hip pouches are a nice fit. I can fit 1 slim V-mount in one of them and the other I keep mic accessories, tape etc. I also got 2 "Rolli Polli" pouches from Maxpedition. In this upper photo you can see them when they are rolled up and stowed, but as you can see on the lower picture, the quickly open up into a large catch all pouch. The smaller one on the right is perfect size for a water bottle or to stow a shotgun mic with a Softie. The larger one at the back is perfect for at the end of the day when taking back wireless mics or IFB's and you just need to stash them somewhere until you get back to your vehicle.

    FullSizeRender.jpg

Overall I've been really happy with the K-Tek Harness.

Pros: Rigid Spine for back support, MOLLE webbing for attaching pouches, ventilated shoulder straps, 6 attachment points to your mixer for weight distribution.

Cons: only had one issue with the harness, the front sternum strap is attached to the shoulder straps via two plastic connectors that allow you to slide it up and down to fit. I've had the strap slip all the way down and completely off the harness on a several occasions and getting it back on is tricky. Maybe on a future update they can add a little stitching to the bottom of the sliding strap to prevent it from slipping off. But having said that, it's a small  issue when compared to the many benefits of the harness.

For those interested, Maxpedition is having a clearance sale. Many of the pouches I use and lots more are on sale right now.

Awesome man just came across this, I am in the process of doing the same thing. I just down sized my bag to an old porta brace and wanted to get molle pouches for harness to hold all the extras that would usually go in front pouch. Nice job, nice to see someone else's work. I bought the same brand maxpedition I like their quality, I used it for the front of my mixing bag now to start on my harness. :)

They work fine for what I do, which is mostly corporate, at most 20 feet away from camera with line of sight.

Haven't done any significant or thorough testing to compare with the stock rubber duck antenna, but I assume it has less range, as those have some gain (I think +4dBi IIRC).

Jose are you still using this antenna? I'm trying to consolidate my bag but the 8inch antenna gets in the way. So seeing that a year has past wanted to get your current feedback on that antenna. I'm thinking of just using my 4inch from my camera link just wonder if range varies a lot.

I'm also waiting for those covers.

RX-12 is a great product and i'm very satisfied with it's simplicity and Range.

I use it in my bag with 2-3 Receivers and more on my cart.

Also i'm in touch with Kortwich at the moment to come up with a better bag tailored for RX-12 and nomad.

What bag model is this and does the receiver section separate from the mixer section? Thanks... Trying to see if I can rig a more compact setup. Not too many options out there for the Nomad.
