Sound Recordist / Mixer / Boom Op / Sound Designer
  1. I know overland park (despite being from and living in the UK). My uncle lives in Leawood and previously lived in prairie village, he's a fire chief in Olathe. I live going out there, great food as you say, cheap and easy parking shopping malls (compared to the UK). Does it hold significance for sound - any big companies based out there? Playing the exchange rate, price difference and tax level over there I could save a killing on a 664.
  2. After a fair bit of use I also think (as mentioned before) cost/ quality its decent enough, 'you get what you pay for etc...'. There's a definite place for a mic like this in the bag for risky/ messy mic damaging set ups. I think most would agree not to get it on the cheap instead of a Schoeps etc... (I have an MKH 50) but in addition to I have certainly found a use for it. I definitely get what people have mentioned about 'range issues' - in simple terms If you get right up lips close to the mic it of course gets very hot, but only a very slight move back and it takes a big jump to being quite weak - not in a way I'd put down to a standard proximity effect. With all this in mind, used it on a shouty scene once while keeping some distance, did the job quite well.
  3. I use hawkwoods NP35s into my Edirol R4 Pro. I power down obsessively (perhaps too much I will admit) this habit comes from previously having to use AAs. But I can make a NP35 last a 12 hour day. Phantom power running from my SQN however.
  4. I have one of these - has anyone used the figure of 8 capsule you can now buy? Did a search, couldn't find much. It's cheap and I understand the 'you get get what you pay for' but MS rig for me is of a lower priority right now. http://www.oktava-online.com/mk012-8.htm
  5. I work out a lot, when I can. I see it as if I make myself stronger the weight will be less of an issue and I'd be less likely to injure myself on a shoot. But being careful, as to not injure myself in the gym. I have found lots of core body exercises work a treat and really help prevent doing my back in (swiss ball). And timing of working out so I dont ruin my body before my next job - which is difficult to do though when things come in last minute. If I know I'm likely to not work for a while (i.e. Christmas) I'll really chuck more weight around and do some higher risk exercises to build up overall strength (dead lifts, squats, clean and jerk etc...) I like the gym and also like the physical element of working in sound/ booming - beats being stuck at a desk which I believe is probably worse for your physical wellbeing and health than using your body in your work. But I'm 25, so ask me again when I'm 50!
