  1. Wasn't Spielberg (or perhaps a Universal blowhard) quoted on a Universal 100th Anniversary promo reel that even though they are digitally restoring films like Jaws, they are printing the restored movie back to negatives for archiving? I get the feeling that film will somehow stick around in a niche manner, much like vinyl. There's still no adequate answer to properly archiving digital productions for 30+ years.
  2. IMDB says that Zach Wrobel was boom op, but NYT says it was Mychal D. Smith...
  3. Any time I send audio to the camera, I do that if they have mechanical pots for audio input. Also tape over the mic/line/48v switch that they have, if possible. As for a discount, if the camera sounded like garbage and you weren't monitoring it, I gotta say that the responsibility lies with you. That said, you had a backup that sounds fine, and even if it isn't timecode sync'd I wouldn't think you need to give back that much money on the job. I would say that any production that was smart would've budgeted for someone to sync sound with the 744t audio either way, because it's going to sound better than what's on the camera. Sigh.
  4. I don't know how that's any different than boring a hole. Might be worth talking to the mask manufacturer, but I think any mods done to a mask to accommodate a mic is going to be a risk factor. Talent is not going to sound too good if they're asphyxiating or otherwise collapsing due to poison gas.
  5. Is there any way of knowing for sure, short of asking him?
  6. All day of 40# strapped to me would have me in the emergency room. Holy cow.
  7. I was exactly dumb enough to try clicking the link in the original post. Go figure!
  8. Was considering a MKH8060 or 8070. Perhaps I will just save up a bit longer for the CMIT.
  9. Though your mention of the sidebar widget let me find an alternative link to donate, and I just sent you $20. Thanks for putting up a nice place to chat.
  10. When I click the "HERE" link in the original post, I am taken to this page: https://www.icloud.com/mobileme/not_found/ I haven't seen another PayPal donation link elsewhere. But the point is that the link now doesn't take you to PayPal, that's all. --R
  11. Jeff, now that MobileMe is dead, the link in the OP is now broken. Can you update the PayPal donation link?
  12. 695 is in L.A., right? What's the local in SF, and I assume they ratified as well? Just wanting to know where I stand when I'm on the producer end of the relationship.
  13. If only the people on the front lines of health care were able to make policy. Sheesh.
  14. I've seen Scarlet owners swear that only a TS unbalanced would work, until I borrowed a camera for an evening and worked it out myself. Doesn't necessarily mean that the firmware on the Scarlet you might be using isn't out of date.
  15. Love your signature, BTW I disagree that the answer is to do nothing. The answer certainly isn't just tort reform. Doctors and healthcare providers are human and make mistakes, the difference from other industries being that when they make mistakes, peoples' lives are adversely affected or even ended. There should be accountability there. So-called "frivolous" lawsuits are usually addressed by the losing party having to cover the legal costs of the prevailing party. Why can't reform also include putting limits on liability insurers to prevent them from gouging doctors? This whole subject is one big ugly Gordian knot, with no Alexander the Great to come along and cut it.
  16. And here I thought this board was all about sound. Okay, the so-called "tax" is really for freeloaders who believe they don't need healthcare coverage when they can afford it. This does not raise taxes on people who carry health insurance already. Quit complaining about your taxes being raised, because if you can afford to buy health insurance and you aren't, you're already an asshat who needs a boot to the head. Man up and pay for it. Costs are not controlled either way (with or without Obamacare), so claiming that it's increasing costs is something of a non-sequitur. Costs have been increasing at breakneck speed, and increasing the number of people (healthy ones as well as sick ones) is likely to level the risk pool and help control costs. Funny thing is that a bunch of opponents are now trotting out the argument that doctors are going to somehow be in short supply, since they are all going to quit in protest of Obamacare surviving the Supreme Court.
  17. I'm not expecting to use it on reality shows (not much call for that in SF, as I understand it). More likely just getting three iso lavs plus a boom and be able to get a dailies mix on a separate track.
  18. I've found that scoring a C-stand from grip is a fine way to hang the sound bag. Otherwise, I think a small vertical cart that your bag can hang off would be pretty tidy, and would let you customize it to add clips for boom poles. I hear that small carts are the gateway drug to big massive sound carts though.
  19. I was just thinking that summing the two to a mono mix might introduce phase problems, which is perhaps the most technical way of saying "pick the best sounding one and send that".
  20. In general, I would agree with that statement. At the same time, I think that an iPad being used as a slate is not a deal-breaker. I would not suggest using it on a full feature-length shoot, but for commercial/corporate work where it's a skeleton crew, it's not unprofessional to walk in with this solution. As to the Zaxcom/Lectro/Sanken question, those are more closely tied to the audio chain than using an iPad to display the timecode. And now cue the comments about how timecode display is vital to the chain...
  21. The 1/8 is a TRS balanced input, just make sure the AC knows to mash his way through the menu to make sure the audio inputs are set up as balanced. It might even require him to restart the camera <sigh>. I would also gaff tape the audio cable to the side of the camera, the mic jacks are not lockable or pretty much secure in any way, shape or form.
  22. I noticed on all the retail sites the little asterisk next to automixing, meaning it's not there yet. But it's intriguing nonetheless, and when the feature does get pushed out on firmware, I wouldn't have to upgrade the Nomad to a 6 in order to get it. For Nomad users out there, what's the sweet spot in terms of which model you buy?
  23. Thanks, I'll give them a call this morning.
