Hi Jeff, Wouldn't employing one of these devices obviate the need for even getting a close approximation of the offending frequency? As alluded, apart from ascertaining offending frequencies, what is the work around for gaps in hearing frequencies or decreased acuity, within desirable ranges,please? Do the aforementioned devices serve here as well, or are there any other devices, software, techniques to help compensate? Thank you very much Fury

Nearly always the case, as far as novel procedures and Rx's, but more due to the regulatory environment than Cashe. If U have ever had the opportunity to sit on a Human Research Committee and present UR study proposal, at a tertiary or quaternary Hospital in the U.S., U would be amazed at the intellectual milieu and the ideation, occasionally expressed. Of course, like most things, perspective and timing rule the day, for the individual... Not sayin' there isn't a really good system in place, though. Is this, or similar pieces, what hearing impaired sound persons use to ID frequencies that they cannot reliably discern? With the "Trust your ears," and the not insignificant hearing impairments of many professional sound mixers, who have been successful and, by report, seem to still be successful, there must be accommodations that are made, in the field. Any other devices, other personnel aside, that are employed for this purpose? By extension, the neophyte would likely benefit, from the same methods, foreshortening the apprenticeship process. Is the ",,,pass standardized hearing tests" a reference to union or other bodies' testing, pertinent to the many of the sound professional's, in this forum? In Fury's, not insignificant experience, in this auditory field, U.S., boarded ENT and similarly credentialed and related Allied Health Professionals, who conduct comprehensive evaluations, for auditory issues, do report ".less-than-severe types of hearing damage." The one caveat, is the definition of "severe, of course." That is the beauty of the written record, so to say... The rest of the suprajacent post has been covered, but, if it saves one person's hearing, to read it again...well there has been a lotta stuff penned here that has been of less than "useful" nature. In fact, this admonition and direction, albeit from, probably lay Posters, could arguably be judged to provide as much net value to the community, as any subject matter. Perhaps the administrator will feel compelled to make this thread, or a similar Post sticky. Certainly, many, who post here and some that lurk, are not likely to have union, available, very valuable, per Hon. Sen., documentation and, in service, meetings. By the time a neophyte works their way up to union eligibility, if they so desire to join same, PREVENTABLE, permanent hearing loss could have been sustained. Seems almost TOO Bright, at max setting in typical, indoor, ambient light. Dropped down, one or two notches, perfect, YMMV. At f22, prolly need max setting. which, as Rado indicated, was spot on. The screen, AFAIK, has not been changed, just a jumper and software change. Thank you very much Fury

If a complete, objective reversal of hearing loss, from firearms related damage, has been documented, by a disinterested, credentialed observer, that would be remarkable. Please let us know, if that is the case. Thank you very much fury

I hear 'ya. Many quotes come to mind, however, disability (hearing loss) is, in large measure,preventable, in this profession, vs. the DP's, disability, which is much less likely to have an epiphenomenon relation to visual loss or, more likely, an exacerbating one (albeit a stretch). BTW, references to U.S., medical specialty, white papers are, generally, more accepted in the medical community than wikipedia, which can also be helpful, but because of its genesis lacks true medical validity. As has been noted, this is an apparent industry problem that has been kept "silent," for the most part, but, apparently mandates elucidation and a call to action. One would think the union, at the least, should have a proactive position. Is there a "polling" function capability on the web site Jeff? Might be, at once, sobering and of genuine benefit. " Quite frankly the hearing tests administered by health professionals only test for the extreme limits of hearing loss. " I would disagree... The Hon. Senator may or may not be correct, depending on the individual administering the test, but a thorough evaluation, includes the sub and supra "normal" test tones around the range of "normal"," human hearing, to some degree. BTW, do the applicable union(s) have any guidelines, published or advice for members, as regards prophylaxis, etc. in the subject area in the O.P.? What does the community think would be the percentage of sound professionals at, say years-5,10,20,25,30, working in the field that can hear tone tests @: 9K,10K, 11K...12K and/or use hearing "aids", beyond headphones on the job? Any retired professionals care to list auditory range, when last working, for example? If one knows that they have gaps in their auditory acuity (complete absence of, say normal conversational speech acuity, with crowded room background voices, what is the work around? Headphones and monitor the isos that are in play, if possible and mix later? A well trained assistant, who is actually doing the work? Thank you very much Fury

Yeah, Mg++ and myriads of remedies have proponents and anecdotal, if not somewhat better support, but passing even the student T test... Having said that and ONLY after a thorough exclusion of other diagnoses, it is not "unheard " of to recommend low salt, caffeine free dietary habits, etc., etc., at least in Western Medicine... At any rate, much like migraines, whose precise etiology is also unknown and, like most of medicine, whose remedy oriented medications have been either empirically or with soft science, prescribed, tinnitus remedies may overlap with migraine ones and others. Then evolves the lumper and splitter camp discussion, in medicine, but that prolly don't belong here nohow... Thank you very much Fury

As far as Zaxcom's turnaround time for Nomad upgrade and repair on Nomad 8, it was better than even imagined and AFA can be ascertained at this juncture-perfect. Certain make ready mods not operational yet. The piece left the friendly confines of Coffey Sound in Ca., for Zaxcom in New Jersey, and was subsequently drop shipped (emphasis on NON drop, actually) back to Ca., in a TOTAL of 6 business days. Bunch of stuff done-Replace battery holder and full power testing, Nomad 48 pin modification, Nomad bright screen modification, Nomad bootloader update, Nomad software update to v. .313E, Nomad PLD update to MS6 for Mix-8 support, Nomad USB support modification. Granted, a lotta easy software stuff, but still... They even sent a new Zaxcom box back. WRT the brightness mod, too bright for all but, possibly, f22 viewing at full illumination. Dial down a few notches, to accommodate ambient lighting and spot on... Thank you very much Fury

With respect, the prudent approach would seem to dictate rapid ENT evaluation for new onset, auditory symptoms, irrespective of screening tests. This is a public service announcement. Thank you very much Fury
