  1. I had a job last year recording on a clients own Nagra 4.2, he had asked around for anyone who knew the Nagra and my 20 + years with one (actually three of them, a III, 4L, 4.2) qualified me. I jumped at the chance, driven by nostalgia that lasted up to the exact moment that I grabbed the strap and tried to pick the machine up, and then it hit me in the back with the weight of 12 "D" cell batteries. Still, a great day in all. Afterwards I asked him why he wanted to use the Nagra and he said that he wanted to have the pure analog sound for his little video project. Then I asked him what he thought would happen when the audio was digitized to be used in Final Cut, and a slow fog moved across his face, and I said no more.
  2. One unmentioned point that I've found great about having an on-board battery and inverter on the cart is that I can set up and test everything (including getting a "find a clean freq" checkout done) without having to wait for electric to get their distro stuff off the truck, once in a while that extra pre-flight time helps (me, anyway) a lot. Oh yeah, since I have a ton of 4 pin cables, including a few with inline on-off switches, and all my gear has a 4 pin input, I'm not about to make any change over soon. Jerry
  3. Last month I saw a review of a interesting device from Fostex that sells for about $150.00. It will cradle an iPhone, and on insertion of that device automatically connects it to two directional mics mounted on it that can be swiveled so you can have two tracks of what you're shooting, or you can have one mic aimed at the subject and 180 the other around so the camera (phone) person can conduct an interview and their side of the conversation recorded on a separate track. I think this will be a game changer, especially after seeing a clip from a, well, I suppose one could still call it a "film" that was shot entirely on a cel phone. We're living in interesting times indeed....... Jerry
  4. " Theory of Defineitive Listening defined on a personal level: 1. Nothing can make me laugh faster than listening to Dory Previn (Andre Previn's ex) sing "20 Mile Zone"... 2. Nothing can bring me to tears faster than listening to Joni Mitchell sing "Songs To Aging Children Come" (on her "Clouds" album and for legal reasons sung by a look-alike in the funeral scene in the film "Alice's Restaurant"). Can't explain it other than connections to things going on at the time I first heard them......
  5. Hi Brian, Welcome aboard the Titanic, you can be sure you'll find a lot of people who will tell you how great a business it used to be, but it's all still out there now, you just have to work it a bit. Best regards, Jerry
  6. Hi, Sound mixer with over 25 years of experience, available to jump the border and work in Canada as well as the U.S. I was born in Detroit, but thanks to my careful choice of parents I have a Canadian Passport . I have done feature films in Canada, and can even get along with those French speaking guys in Montreal, ne se pas. Details, imdb link, and more at www.jerrywolfe.com Thanks, Jerry
  7. Hear hear (no pun intended) Robert. Doing most of my recording on low budget films shot at noisy locations, I feel the same but would have to add in that poorly written dialogue preformed by bad actors that's been recorded with all the bells and whistles still sounds like crap for the most part. Of course it's all very clean and clear crap, but....... cheers, Jerry http://boskolives.wordpress.com
  8. The FR-2 does have a great false start provision, it's called the 10 second pre-roll. I never hit the actual record switch until I've heard the clap of the slate, this has saved me an uncountable amount of time because of a last second "hold on" from the camera guys, when they discover that their battery is going dead or they don't have enough time left for the take on their tape/drive/whatever. Of course, your mileage may vary, double your money back if this doesn't work for you. Best regards, Jerry http://boskolives.wordpress.com/
