  1. Anyone use power backups? I'm thinking of getting a ACP backup unit for the cart.. like perhaps a 500+ watts. Are these quite enough for the set? Thanks -Richard
  2. Not sure about this one.. but I heard that Griffith Park has cheap permits at the main ranger station.. Also.. I took some cousins from out of town on that VIP tour on the Warner Bros lot.. Silly me.. I brought my camera. Tour guide shut me down telling me there is NO filming of any kind due to a guerrilla film crew trying to film a movie while on the studio tour. No thats ballsy.. And.. Union Station has a policy in place that stats that you can film, as long as there is NO tripods, but filming on the train will get you thrown off for sure. -Richard
  3. Yep your right.. there aren't any 'attractive nuisances' on the Venice walkways.. -Richard
  4. Working on a guerrilla film on Sunday, down at Muscle Beach Venice. I got there early, found a place to park even, met the film makers/actors/producer at the location. While I was there, I observered.. no less then 20 homeless people, one passed out drunk laying on the concrete (he looked like he died during the night and the flies were all over him), 2 guys walking around only wearing speedos (pretty much showing everything because they were shredded), 4 people that asked me if I need "medical marijuana", 1 guy huffing paint in plain sight, 4 people drinking beer in plain sight, 10 panhandlers, 1 pick pocket and at least 20 tourist video taping and taking photos. 2 minutes after we turn on our video cameras, some guy from the parks and recreation comes over and tells us we can't film here?? Our camera crew has consumer Sony handycams exactly like that of the 20 tourist that were just filming in front of me less then 2 minutes ago??? I feel like saying to the guy, "then why don't you say anything to the tourist who you just walked right by?" But I thought it best to keep my month shut, as I normally do on sets. Do you think that Venice has other problems too work on, than running off some guerrilla film crew thats facing their camera toward a concreate wall? I'm not a fan of guerrilla films, but this just pisses me off.. If they are going to implament a policy of no cameras, thats fine, but don't pick and choose which people can film or not based on a random selection. Next time, I'm dropping the boom, going 100% wireless and sync to the cameras later on.. then I'll just hang by the side, and if anyone ask me what I'm doing, I'll just ignore them.. In the mist of 20 Camcorders, they'll never be able to figure out which one is the ones on the crew. Also.. last time I checked, recording audio in a public place is not against the law, so stop going to the audio guys and asking them to not film.. I'm no the one holding a camera. <rant off> -Richard
  5. Just thought you guys might like this one.. Baz Luhrmann is doing a whole bunch of "behind the scenes" takes from his upcoming Australia movie. Todays clip was "sound". It's really nicely done and has interviews with the sound designer, sound mixer, and even the boom op.. 1) You can head over to the iTunes Podcast at: http://www.apple.com/education/settoscreen/ or 2) Get the movie directly from my server here: http://www.deepmagicstudios.com/videos/Baz_Luhrmann-Sound_Design.mov (be sure to right click on that, because I doubt if it plays on your browser. Once saved, rename .mov to m4v) -Richard
  6. http://cbs2.com/local/LaFontaine.voiceover.died.2.808104.html Can you guys think of something that this guy wasn't in? -Richard
  7. The thing thats unbelievable is that if you go to there web site.. It looks like it shows the LA Center Studios as their place of business.. and list multiple movies they've done.. What do they charge students? -Richard
  8. That was on before, people keep flagging it, good to see it back..
  9. Here's a Tip for everyone.. Guitar Center has many numerous (25ft, 50ft, ect) sizes of Mogami cables with Netrik connectors. I use these till they break. We all know these XLR cables drag all over the place and get trampled and pulled on in just about ever job. Since they have "Lifetime Warranties" I just keep taking them back over and over again. I keep 2 of all sizes, and rotate them out if one breaks. -Richard

  11. Not only do you have to compete for NO PAY jobs wanting all your equipment, but this one takes it to the next step I didn't even think was possiable! How about training someone to do your job for no money.. Only a 7 week commitment too.. http://www.mandy.com/1/jobs3.cfm?v=29563620 Wow.. -Richard
  12. http://cbs2.com/local/amtrak.train.out.2.802355.html Wow.. Can you guys imagine they make this kind of a mistake on your next airline flight? -Richard
  13. The Coffey Audio Mag, is most definitely the best mag in our business.. -Richard
  14. Curley, Thats exactly why I don't blog. I'm sure I have a lot to talk about, but things might get a little personal, and people we know and talk about in the business have ears. Even this forum has burned me now.. I often forget that this is NOT a little general discussion between us mixers here.. -Richard
  15. Not sure if everyone reads this or not, but for anyone working in the 'biz' this is truly awesome reading.. http://hollywoodjuicer.blogspot.com/ p.s. I don't have any affiliation with this guy, but his writting style is pure art! Be sure to read his last article called "The Rich get Richer..". It's a wake up call to anyone who has agreed to work on a pilot for no money, for possible work later.. -Richard
  16. Dam.. All that Equipment thats going to end up on eBay, will be damaged. -Richard
  17. I'm actually just playing stupid with all the people who give me Flat rates now, and simply NOT accepting this as a quote. I'm sure the motivation for Producers to do this is that the job sounds much more appealing, as apposed to a just saying $50/day. After hearing so many producers do it this way, I was starting to wounder if I'm the one who's wrong.. Glad to know that I can confide in my support group here. -Richard
  18. I seam to have had a rash of Producers offering me jobs with a Flat rate for the whole job. Who the #*ck told these people that flat rate prices are the way things work in Hollywood. Next time someone tells me one flat rate, I think that I'm going to come unglued. I'm forced to respond as nice as I can, that Hollywood doesn't use a flat rate quotes, we use daily quotes here in LA. Everything runs on daily, crew, rentals, vehicles, trucks, equipment.. For example, lets say you have a production and for some reason they scrap a whole part of the script thus remove a production day.. do I then have to give back some of the money? I think not.. Or worse yet a day or two were added to the production (which happens more often then not), Imagine how awkward it becomes to now ask for additional money midway though shooting?? Why do these Producers insist on saying, $XXXX.XX for the whole shoot? It's bad enough that we have to educate people on what sound does, but now we have to educate Producers on their own jobs?? I went over the the Barns and Nobel at the Grove the other day and there were no less than 20 books on producing in the film section. For Christ sake people, go buy a dam book and read about how these things work people!! <rant off now> -Richard
  19. Thanks Jeff. I'm actually amazed at the vast majority of sound mixers that DO NOT have a web presence. Basically, here's how I look at it. As a freelancer, you are continually selling yourself. Every time you go to an interview, apply for a gig, or turn in a resume, you are essentially trying to get someone to notice you over your competition. It would seam like it's a simple thing to just say to a person "checking you out", just to refer them to your site for more about you. Anyway.. thats the way I look at it. If anyone needs help with setting up their website, I can give them a hand at least in explaining how domains work, web host, Flash, embedded video, and HTML. -Richard
  20. I might as well add mine in here. http://www.good4sound.com Done with Dreamweaver.. The old fashion way. I like iWeb, but I just couldn't get it to do what I wanted past any custom stuff. -Richard
  21. Working Comic-Con on a Mocumentary yesterday, and our film crew got the general idea of a distrust of the media. Finding interviewees, was quite a challenge. Perhaps all those years of the media making fun of the 'geeks' has taken it's toll. Or perhaps beyond the costumes, there isn't much too tell. A stark contrast from LA as you usually have no trouble at all getting people in front of a camera. We ended up wasting loads of footage on nothing if you ask me. Overall a huge cluster#@$k. I think they expected 120 thousand, but I wouldn't be surprised if that number moved up into the 200 thousand range as it go so packed we couldn't move down the carpet. The camera kept getting bumped by people.. hum? Truck turnover on the 5 freeway at Camp Pendleton made our star and director 6 hours late to the show. The crowds were so loud that it made my boom and wireless useless, and I resorted to the interview Mic's. The show itself was not loud, just the people. Just about every news gathering organization on the planet was there. I did get some swag though while waiting around all day. Some very awesome costumes, especially a Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones Characters.. the details were stunning. Odd, there was a lot more women than I though there would be. Most of them got in line for 'Twilight". Strange as it may seem, I couldn't find any actual Comic Books there either. -Richard
  22. Hey Jeff, Can you get me into that Wexler Video Party, with Batman feature? -Richard
  23. OMG old school, You just about nailed it here.. shire poetry! -Richard
  24. Humm.. looks like a Eric Felland got a little bit too drunk and caused a ruckus. Brolin and Wright tried to just perhaps get the cops off of him, and perhaps just take him home. Seen this all too many times.. Some people turn wild when you get a little alcohol in them. -Richard
  25. Does anyone know which crew people were arrested in that brawl fight? http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/07/13/entertainment/main4256582.shtml -Richard
