  1. We are staying at the Biltmore. I'll try to come down at 5 if we are there, but we do have plans for later that night so we might be gone by then. It would be nice to meet you all in person!
  2. I reviewed the app for the CAS Quarterly last year. You can download the issue here: http://cinemaaudiosociety.org/pdf/CAS%20Winter2012.pdf/
  3. The Senator is correct, but he is also being a pedantic pain in the ass. Which is why we love him.
  4. Totally worth the money to have an accountant do it. It also CYA if you end up getting audited, which is extremely common for people who work in entertainment. I know people who have been audited the full 7 years.
  5. My recollection is that the Fox multichannel films used a 3 mike configuration. I'm not stu it was Decca but that sure looks like it.
  6. Probably easier to remove a red nose in Photoshop than Red noise with RX.
  7. It's one of the most emotionally involving films in years. I highly recommend reconsidering your decision not to see it. It is a Spanish film with a Spanish director, who decided to cast the best actors he could find, who happen to speak English.
  8. Re-recording mixer said that two things made that soundtrack great. The first was Welles' insistence on getting production sound perfect, including that actors project and enunciate, which was from his theatrical background. It helped that it was shot on sound stages. The second was Herrmann's score, as Herrman had learned to write around the dialogue when he was writing for radio.
  9. I use an Onkyo receiver which has the same mike system as the Denon for tuning the room. The system is called Audessey and was designed by Tom Holman when he was at USC. it's amazing how much of a difference it makes.
  10. Earlier this year I had to transfer some DA-88 tapes from 1998. They had not been played since then and had been stored carefully. The were a ton of dropouts and it took three machines to get through them. I know some of the studios used these as archival tapes, I pity their decision.
  11. I train my student mixers by dropping a small food pellet in front of them whenever they move the correct fader.
  12. +1 google voice. It's the only number I give out.
  13. I don't celebrate until the check clears. Then I get a nice bottle of red wine.
  14. I use two mikes when the actor keeps leaning into the mike and getting too much proximity. I put the second further way and use the first as a dummy mike.
  15. I've had good luck with "if the audience can't hear you, you might as well not have any lines. They will be cut in post."
  16. A large part of the concept of binaural recording is dealing with reflections off all parts of the human head. Not only do you need full ears with pinnae, you need the nose in front. A dummy head would work wonders for your setup. Also, hard to tell from the photos, how far apart did you put the two mikes?
  17. After you are done photoshopping it, be sure to Instagram it, so you can put a cool filter on it to make it look old!
  18. There is a link to the full paper on the author's web site. There is a link to his blog in the article.
  19. More Evidence that Kids (American and Japanese) Prefer Accurate Sound Reproduction http://seanolive.blo...n-japanese.html
  20. Actually this has completely pragmatic uses. Video games have the characters moving in nexpected ways, it would be nice to have different sounds each time they moved.
  21. I have felt the same about the Grammys. Every time I have gone, it's been an amazing and memorable experience, but every time I have watched it on tv, it has sucked. I guess you had to be there.
