Re-recording mixer said that two things made that soundtrack great. The first was Welles' insistence on getting production sound perfect, including that actors project and enunciate, which was from his theatrical background. It helped that it was shot on sound stages. The second was Herrmann's score, as Herrman had learned to write around the dialogue when he was writing for radio.
