  • About
NYC Location sound recordist specializing in feature documentary, commercials, television ENG, commercials/industrials and corporate video. Pretty much everything except feature films (though toyed with that too). Love to travel and scuba dive with my wife, a rabid vinyl collector and audiophile geek, and also happen to love playing loud whacked out art/psych/punk/jazz freak out guitar through big amps...but don't worry, I wear custom earplugs!

  1. A sound person is needed tomorrow (6/26) in Ann Arbor. It's for a same-sex marriage documentary. The mixer will need wireless hops to camera, two wireless lavs, and boom. They can contact the director, Edward Rosenstein 917 886 2977
  2. But to comment on the 644....yeah, I'm tempted, I'll never ditch my lil' 744T, but for a lot of documentary and ENG jobs I do, an integrated mixer/TC recorder would be the cats meow, and I own Sound Devices gear. I thought the Nomad might be my thing, but it looks kinda flimsy to me, I hate the XLRs on the bottom, and I've been told by other non-Zaxcom users that it's not intuitive, and they did not like it. If I belonged to the cult of Zaxcom, I'm sure I would sing praises, but I belong to the cult of Sound Devices (though for sonics, my audiophile heart connects with the cult of Sonosax and Nagra).
  3. I agree with both Jack and Ethan! I don't want to be a pack mule (unless I'm gonna get close to a grand a day or something), and yup, unless one is desperate, you can just say "no" to gigs you don't want to do, I've certainly done it numerous times over the years when the job pain/pay ratio was not to my liking, a day at the beach or playing noisy guitar have been options I've chosen over working sometimes! (Though my wife and I don't have kids, which kinda gives me a bit more freedom $)
  4. Have had a 744T for several years, and the fantastic little machine has served me well, I would find it hard to part with, esp since 664 does not go above 48K (if I record music stuff, I want at least 88 or 96K. 48K is fine for dialogue). Now, I do tons of sound to camera stuff, used a 442 for years, and replaced it with a 552 (even better mixer), not caring much about the internal recorder (no internal TC! No back up recording media!), I always grab my 744T, which interfaces with it nicely. HOWEVER....if I knew the 664 was coming out, I may not have bought the 552. I always dreamed of an integrated mixer/TC recorder to lighten and simplify the bag. While 788T has nicer preamps, it's not set up to be a quick and easy field mixer, is a battery hog, and it's rare I need more than 4 tracks for the jobs I do. Got excited about the Nomad, until non-Zaxcom fans told me how much they hated the non-intuitive nature of the things (I'm talking about very verbal HATRED), and also it looks like such a flimsy toy, and I HATE the XLRs at bottom (horribly inconvenient, in my opinion). Sound Devices stepped up to the plate and may have delivered my dream machine (for the sort of work I do). Keep in mind, I said I doubt I would sell my 744T, it's a groovy machine I trust so much, more than paid for itself, so don't feel bad about the 552/744T combo. Myself...I have a feeling the gear monkey on my back will steer me into a 644 next year. I'll wait to hear what people think of it.....
