As I said, the mini is just an expesive add on, not designed as a camera. Pat -
New camera: Arri Alexa Mini
Patrick Tresch replied to Vincent R.'s topic in Cameras... love them, hate them
No sound input but two nice fans. I think this cam is not intended to replace the big Alexas but just an expensive "add on" for gimbal use (like if there would be no need to record sound when using a gimbal...) Good that Arri made the move to get the Epic's form factor after 4 years of R&D now get the native resolution from 2.8k to something standard in the industry! The good news is that I don't see any fans on the new RED camera called "Weapon" (like the name or not, I'm not a fan of that name) hope we will get more infos soon. Kill the need for a fan! Pat -
RED Dragon with 2.0 fan noise
Patrick Tresch replied to cws837's topic in Cameras... love them, hate them
Hello, What firmware version do you use on the Epic Dragon? While on adaptive, you can't change the fan speed, therefore they are grayed out. Adaptive quiet record is good only if you shoot takes less than 1 minute wich is hard in our days. In this mode the camera could get hot and burst the well known "blower effect" or even shut down if getting too hot. You could also hear an increase of fan noise during the take if it has to cool down. With the actual firmware, I don't remember wich possibility it will choose... BEST setting IMHO is to use Adaptive mode with the TEMP target set to 70C° (the max). I allways run this way and there is no danger for the camera boards. You get a quieter camera on the long run and have the same audio experience during rehearsal & shooting. So you can take the right decisions on the rehearsal. My camera setup, to get the best audio experience (less fan noise), is to use the Original bottom fan (old version V1) and the FanPlate. I shoot documentry and features without sound problems. If you have any other questions please post here. Have a nice prep. Pat PS: for the synch do you shoot 25p? -
RED Dragon with 2.0 fan noise
Patrick Tresch replied to cws837's topic in Cameras... love them, hate them
Hello Tonetripper, There are some advice on this forum how to use the Fan modes on the Epic Dragon to get the best audio recording experience with it. The good news is that Dragons makes less noise (as it likes more heat than MysteriumX) than Epic-X with the MysteriumX sensor. IMHO the best fan solution is the FanPlate with the original bottom fan and fan record mode on the camera set to adaptive 70C°. See you Pat -
Sorry this don't get me less worried. FYI fans on the RED Epic can get as quiet as on the Alex. Depends on your accessories. But I'm happy there is another 4k option out there that can compete with the Epic Dragon. Pat

RED Dragon with 2.0 fan noise
Patrick Tresch replied to cws837's topic in Cameras... love them, hate them
The camera doesn't emit other noise than the one from the fan (whine like). Your description, 5-6 khz tone, is IMHO not from the Epic. Though I never worked with the ProIO module or other modules containing fans... Pat -
RED Dragon with 2.0 fan noise
Patrick Tresch replied to cws837's topic in Cameras... love them, hate them
Hello, The new bottom fan has a wine. You can hear it on this comparative test. The best solution out there for sound with Scarlet, Epic-X and Dragon is the FanPlate using the original bottom fan and the Adaptive mode (not quiet record) set to 65C° or even better set to 70C° Here the test. This is a sound forum, not a camera one... ;-) but I've got lot of fans among the sound crew as I always work with the FanPlate on Epic. Pat

This post just remember there is a solution out there : The FanPlate. Pat

Interesting thanks for the link Pat

You'r probably right Mike but my friend used it for last Godard's movie released for theater, so I was wondering if it could be decently used for my docu? ;-) So I must read that you where dissapointed when you used it? Pat Ps: thanks for the Oxy ;-)

Hello, I'm interested to add to my sound kit a stereo microphone to have some nice atmo... I've been thinking of using a MS (Schoeps) couple or Ortf assembly but it's out of my budget and not compatible with the way we shoot the documentry. Mainly a two man band (director making the sound and dop having the stereo mic on board). For stereo consistency we will also make some atmo for every setup, as camera movement can disturb the stereo "field". We where thinking of a camera mounted mic (we shoot Blackmagic pocket camera or 5DMKIII) but this looks too flimsy. (?) I friend of mine has used the Soundman mic with great results and is really convinced it could be the winner for our setup... Now I would like to hear from you. Have you used the Soundman system? Where you happy with it? What are the con in a documentry style of shooting. Thanks a lot. Patrick PS: we will record on a Sonosax SX-R4

Hello Armin, How did it "fail". Was the leaf blower mode triggered or did the recording stop... ? Quiet record is great for small takes as the camera will "stop to breathe" waiting for the end of the take. For longuer takes "adaptive" mode (only) would be better but you'll have a heavier fan noise to get to target (65C° or worst 60C°). IMHO the new fans from RED are good in cooling faster but not for a longer takes where a constant cooling has to be maintained. There fore we designed the FanPlate with a large fan that spinns slower. What was the room temp? Thanks Pat

Lol. FYI the Epic with the FanPlate has the same noise floor as the Alexa in prores mode. Have a nice shooting. Pat

[Settings Thread]BMD Pocket Cinema Camera
Patrick Tresch replied to Alex Mitchell's topic in Cameras... love them, hate them
I was going to use the inbuilt mic and shoot double system and synch with "pluraleyes" kind of software. The way I've done it with the 5DMKII. What do you think? Pat -
Red Epic failed to see timecode

When you do that the camera gets crazy (please no sarcasm) when you hit record. You have to reboot. Pat- 48 replies

Red Epic Sound Problems
Patrick Tresch replied to Marc Wielage's topic in Cameras... love them, hate them
Hello, Remember you can have problem synch the Epic if the video frame rate of the HDSDI output (monitoring signal) is not matching the frame rate of the project. This occurs often in 25p frame rate. Here some more explanations: Pat -
How to Genlock RED EPIC ?
Patrick Tresch replied to Masaki Hatsui's topic in Cameras... love them, hate them
Here the tricky part in 25p When focus confirm enhanced is selected the monitoring output of the hdsdi (if hdsdi is selected) is forced to 30p and dismatch the project rate of 25p. This puts the gen in red. Not very intuitive but this was the hickup. Pat From User Manual p. 40 https://www.red.com/downloads/5231faea2f74a961f4000005 GEN Gray: No genlock signal is currently detected, or the presented signal cannot cross-lock to project (24.00 FPS vs. 23.98 FPS). GEN Red: During process of sync, or genlock is lost while recording. GEN Green: A genlock signal matching the current HD-SDI monitor rate has been locked to. GEN Yellow: When timing is cross-locking to compatible but not matching monitor rate. For example, gen- lock = 24.00, and HD-SDI monitor rate = 25.00. NOTE: 3D operation should not be done if GEN is yellow. This is a warning that genlock source settings and camera settings are not aligned. Phasing of the sync between cameras cannot be guaranteed when GEN is yellow. SYNC SYNC Gray: The sensor sync mode is not Genlock. SYNC Red: The sensor sync mode is Genlock, but it is not locked to any genlock signal, or genlock or sen- sor sync is lost while recording. SYNC Green: A genlock signal compatible with the HD-SDI monitor rate has been locked to and the sensor timing is also locked to it. -

Hello Tom, I understand your point of view but I wonder if you worked with the FanPlate? The only solution out there to keep your camera quiet. If today, the 100% fan is kiking in, it's a statement that your operator don't know his tool. There are two things to do to make the Epic work flawlessly and quiet: - fan set to adaptive mode quiet record set to 70C° (to keep it from overhating at lowest fan speed) - the FanPlate (to cool it down and lower the fan noise) Anyone who didn't tried these two things can't argue (with me) about a loud Epic. Yes Amira (over priced camera) will sell like hot cakes. It will be a nice evolution of the F5, affordable for the rich productions. It's another philosophy than what RED's is doing : bringing the best technology to the market at best price. The perfect camera don't exist and there are a lot of talk going on on REDUSER about a new camera design as the Dragon sensor is out now. But there is no way some one can tell me "Epic is not a tool that a docu can be shot on". I really want that the sound mixer gets the best audio experience on set as he is telling the story with me. Therefore I decided to create the FanPlate. I'm not an Epic owner. I'll never buy a camera body as I don't want to push the production to rent my equipment. I use a Bolex, an Arri SR3, Gopro, a 5D, an Epic if it is what the project needs. I've never felt the need to use an Alexa.
