  1. It only depends on the operator setup. I've been working alone with the Epic in the Amazon filming tribes with power every 2 days and had no problem. Set it up correctly and doco style is an easy go with the Epic. Pat
  2. I think this bug debepends on the camera as I never had this on mine. Pat
  3. Hello David! I fear it's due to signal processing. So not only Sony, but Canon, Red,... also have this issue. I think so. One question. What is the difference betwen GENLOCK, Synch, and trisynch level? Pat
  4. Paralinx Arrow can also cause interference with HF reciever. I've got it once, but only if it's closer than 10cm from the Paralinx. Pat
  5. Hello here the DoP speaking... ;-) Timecode stamp is recorded at the first picture recorded on the camera (as does AVID for example) and then the following images are only an increment of +1 +1 +1 +1 +1 until the end of the clip. So the internal clock of the camera dictates the pace if there is no GENLOCK telling what speed the +1 +1 +1 +1 should go. So if you shoot small clips of about 1 minute you'll probably be ok but if you shoot longer clips like 40 minutes interviews you'll get a time slip or even worst a time stretch faster and slower in the same clip. So therefore we want to have a Genlocked camera to the sound but it also can help on lessering the number or asynch frames because recording will allways start at the same readout frame and not inbetween a timecode change and have a bigger slip of 1 to 3 frames. Now we are looking at the camera side if it's due to a faulty body. This is the methodology we are doing to tackle a problem down not to get in unnecessary department wars. Or throw bad words on manufacturers. Be sure, I'll keep informed about the results. See you. Patrick Epic op guide: 5.1.23
  6. Thanks Vasileios, The good thing is that, after testing, the blimb doesn't heat up the camera. The blimp is not quite "Swiss made" branding but more like Home Made... ;-) See you. Pat
  7. Hello, Just wanted to show off my Epic Blimp! We probably have now the quietest Epic in the world. But probably not the sexiest! ;-) See you. Pat
  8. Hello Karim Sawrab, I don't know... but my hint would be : Smaller fans means faster rpm for the same amount of air throughoutput wich means noisier fan... I don't know if I'm way off but it's my logic. The FanPlate uses a big 60x60x25mm fan. The good thing with the FanPlate, is that you can upgrade the fan yourself as fan tech is improoving. (if you know how to solder, buy the standard 60x60x25 12v Fan). After testing various quiet fans we choose the best one. I'm ordering other to see if the evolution is getting better noise emproovement. But frankly, the FanPlate is getting the recording noise level of the Epic at the same level (or better) as the best blimped 35/16mm cameras. Well... if people are used to shoot with the 5D it's another story. See you. Pat
  9. From what I know. 24p is on todays Firmwares actually 23,97. REAL 24p has been killed on the 5D a few years/monthes ago. But It could be that 24p "pal" is real 24p as we (PALpeople) don't use fractions (0.03) for color sampling. And 24p NTSC could be 23.79 to be in pair with the color sampling of NTSC countries.... ? You can shoot a test of both settings and make a commande+i on the file to see what it tells you. Pat
  10. Well, I've done a new test today, and here can be your answer. Tell me what you think? This test compares all existing cooling solutions for the Epic/Scarlet cameras. Enjoy. Pat
  11. Hello, Here is a litle video to show my Epic docu setup for fast mooving pace. No hair dryer ever here. R3D 8:1 is lighter than Prores444 no download time problems. Last time I had a technical break down was in the Amazon. The Quantar stopped recording. The Epic was just fine. https://vimeo.com/74732703 Password : Epic Have a nice evening. Patrick
  12. A lot of sound guys making a lot of fuss about Fans (specially for Epic/Scarlet) but the reality is that none is doing the possible to do it right. Patrick
  13. Well a camera is not mainly build to accomodate the sound guys... ;-) Too bad they didn't do it 2-3 years ago. Nothing new technology wise. Same Alexa sensor. "HD is the future" & "HD is good enough for documentries" story is just a joke... Move your ass Arri and give us something up to date!!! Now people can be happy for that 3 XLR input, the production will ask the camera operator to make sound and skip the sound guy ;-) Be happy! Pat
  14. C300 is a great camera. C500 is a no go when you shoot with sound. It's "twice as" noisy than a F65. Pat
  15. Hello, Ok I'll forget to try to convice that an Epic can be as quiet as an Alexa. Not my mission here. Well I've now an answer from RED about my New Bottom Fan making more noise. My new bottom fan could have an issue and I'll have to send it in. Three lessons: - I'll get back to you once I got a replacement fan to get it clear if it's just mine wich has a defect. - There can be some difference between items of the same model. Hope you are a lucky one that gets the good one. - Test it out. Nothing is good "out of the box". = prepping is key like in the old days with 35mm, just other priorities. Pat.
  16. Hello, An Epic Fan higher as 35% in quiet situation is not admissible for me (Even as a DP). For dead Quiet sound stages closer than 1,5m from the actor it has to be between 25% and 30%. The room tone in this video was made with the camera swiched off. The camera was even closer than 20cm (maybe 15cm) but the aim was to hear the difference between setups and not to reproduce a "normal" shooting condition. Just to remember, the Epic set at 25% is as quiet as an Alexa. Pat
  17. This is not a normal room tone as it has been pushed to the max the closest to the front of the camera. It's to get an idea what is the difference between different setups. IMHO the lasts clips are the most convincing in favor of using the FanPlate. Pat
  18. Hello, Here is a litle sound test I've made to check the new Bottom fan from RED. The FanPlate is also used in this test, so people can hear the difference with and without FanPlate. Pat
  19. I think Marc is right, The sensor will be running hotter without problem but the core will have to cope with more heat. And the core is at it's limit at 75c. I've tested the new Bottom Fan today. He is not much bigger (longer fan blades) but he makes more noise than the old one... I'm staying with the old fan and shooting in Adaptive mode (wich is better as I thought) with my beloved FanPlate ;-) Pat PS: Piman, I've overseen that. You have a sharp eye!
  20. Where do you get that from? Adding a heat élément? Dragon will be happier with heat and therefore cope with less cooling. Thats my understanding. Pat
  21. Hello, Dragon Epic (the new sensor) also brings also good news for the sound crew. IT seams that it will run with less power consuption and less heat and will support more heat before overheating. This means considerably diminishing the fan speed. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?102557-Dragon&p=1227499&viewfull=1#post1227499 Pat
  22. Your welcome, Now the Fan settings should be also explained p.143, but this is more a collaboration with the AC/DoP so there is no laid out rool... Hope they are open minded and know their tool... Pat PS: I'll test the new build wich regulates heat with the new Bottom Fan from RED and the FanPlate from Mecasax and report back here at JWS.
  23. Have a nice read. Here is the Epic manual: http://s3.amazonaws.com/red_3/downloads/manuals/955-0002_v4_EPIC_Operation_Guide_Rev-B.pdf TC explained at p. 122 Minijack Microphone input and wiering explainded at p. 175 TC and Synch BNCs explainded at p. 179 Peak meter explained at p. 190 Patrick
  24. Hello, The FanPlate is a big 60x25mm fan that increase the natural air flow of the camera. Looking at the new front fan RED designed I think it will be better heat and noise emprovement. But the two little top fans that are built in the heat sink don't get me excited at all. Not only because I'm the "promoter" of the FanPlate... but because two fans of 2,5cm can't be efficient and even hinder the natural airflow of the camera. In normal heat situation (25c) I usually shoot 25-35 in rec mode and 45% in standby mode wich is ok for the crew and myself standing next to the camera. For reheasal it's possible to assign a "rehearsal" mode to the Epic user keys so that the sound crew can have real shooting conditions. - Bigger fan means more air flow, less RPM, less noise. No rocket science... Patrick
