  1. re: mic pre transformers I like them with the human voice and hammond b-3 speakers for anything else, especially percussive stuff , drums, pianos, marimba's, violins, space shuttle launches I feel transformerless mics pres have far more clarity and resolution imho yada yada yada your mileage may vary ps: andy cooper is an interesting man who made a very good product fact - wasn't andy the LA nagra tech before he was cooper sound ? al
  2. is there a discount when you are the beta tester ?
  3. > i just like my stake roar< steak roars in me about 4 hours after I eat it beans take less time ++++ christian - I hear you and totally agree - the human voice does sound better recorded through a quality mic pre transformer neve, api, cooper and nagra are perfect examples and a music recording backround will teach you the difference al " and mackies sound like mackies "

  5. >My new guy (who I believe to be more trustworthy in general), says my rental gear should be on a Schedule 'E' and I should avoid >Schedule 'C' income if possible, since I pay social security tax on Schedule 'C' income, among other things. >What are you or your tax guys doing on your tax return? The new tax guy is correct - keep rental income away from schedule C or you will pay a 16+% SS tax on it. I finally followed my tax guys advice and incorporated as an S corp 12 years ago. When I am on a payroll company job I work as a loan out corporation and get a check with no taxes, social security or medicare taxes out of it. I get a bigger check and production doesn't have to pay the 8+% match for SS/medicare. I pay myself a small salary and deduct taxes and send them in every quarter. Any other $$$ I take is referred to as " disbursement of profits and is not subject to SS/medicare taxes. nb: this method could reduce your eventual SS benefits, so I take what I save in SS deductions and pay them into a retirement account. it works for me al al mcguire soundguy inc jacksonville fl
  6. I would have to unblock him to be part of that rare informative moment too many NAR* posts for me to do that note - I did the research and provided a link, I'm old school when it comes to answering a query al * NAR = no apparent reason
  7. I replaced mine when my buddies 744t's TC battery died. IIRC I just replaced it with sanyo eneloop Nimh AA Sound Devices make it a piece of cake to replace it. http://www.sounddevices.com/notes/recorders/changing-tc-battery/ al
  8. >Someone said stay away from Reality shows. Why's that? < I'm happy you asked. Carrying 10 wireless receivers, 2- 5 input mixers, 1 multi track HD backup, stereo wireless hop, 2 - NP1's, and comteks plus mixing while booming. ( actual request from network reality show $350/12, use their gear, 1 hour travel each way uncompensated, I quoted Nancy Reagan and just said no ) Our bodies were not designed to do this, you hang all that weight in front of you and the body will attempt to balance it out with hamstring, psoas and back muscles. Ever sit down after a long day and then have difficulty standing up ? That's the psoas muscle not being happy. Reality TV mixing is great experience for a young mixer and I am not dissing those who do it. Far from it, it teaches you to trust your intuition and it is a total rush to get it all right on take 1, and it's always take 1. I am suggesting that you take care of all of the equipment, not just the stuff that runs on DC. After 12 years of music mixing and 24 years of production sound I have a neck that my chiro says looks more like a strait edge than an arc. My new hobby is watching clouds go by. al someone "However much I am at the mercy of the world I never let myself get lost by brooding over its misery. 9. >Yoga is great for your core, posture alignment, and neck and shoulders. Combine that with another work out regiment like getting a ?>dog, and you'll be ready for anything! Didn't realize how much great exercise I would get dog walking. And animals keep you centered. George I agree, add the dog. because if my migrant film maker lifestyle I am unable to accept the responsibility of a dog depending on me, so I'm forced to borrow dogs from neighbors they are like grandkids al
  10. rado I think language is important, say what you mean so you can mean what you say, and if you throw rocks expect rocks to be thrown back at you. I personally apologize for Apple not coming to you to get your informed opinion on how to develop the ipad. Hopefully they will learn from this failure and do better in the future. al
  11. The camera will connect to the KiPro min via SDI BNC and camera timecode is embedded in that stream afaik
  12. My last 16 mm film client has evolved to a Sony F3 camera, a set of Cooke S4 Panchros and a Ki Pro Mini He plans to using the F3 as an imaging device and record directly to the KiPro Mini. My plan is to use 788T to jam a Denecke SB-T to drive the TC in of the Sony F3 @ 23.976, no genlock I would wire audio into the KiPro Mini and those files would be what he would edit from We would also shoot a slate to see what kind of offset we might have any opinions about this workflow ? any opinions on the KiPro mini ? thanks in advance al
  13. >And I was hated < rado, could this be a bit of an exaggeration or oversensitivity on your part ? I don't care if you use an abacus, as long as it the choice you make hopefully we all use the tools that work best for us and so it goes al " why can't we just get along " rodney king

  16. hi jan >One regret I have -- as a happily single person in the film business -- is that it seems a disservice to any living beastie to have one as a pet.< I agree with you totally - pets need our time and our schedules rarely allow for that may I recommend sourdough pancakes - yum thanks for all your excellent posts you are an great resource for us all al
  17. janI don't have an answer but that is a wonderful question I do think we will see more AES audio in our future al
  18. hi rado you are not out you are just down for a bit you will recover a lot of good suggestions inversion table, pilates for core strength, yoga to stay stretched I'll add don't carry around more gear than you need and put it down when you don't have to carry it and always be working on your range of motion looking down at audio gear is bad for the curve of the neck I had to have surgery 6 months ago - part of a herniated disc got into the nerves - not fun MRI showed what was happening - it took a neurosurgeon 20 minutes to fix it I needed a month to heal the best part of back surgery is now the grip and electrics suddenly appear whenever I need to take the cart up stairs life is a sine wave al

  23. thanks eric I misinterpreted the -20 figure as recorded signal to noise al From the Arri Alexa tech page: >"Under 20 dB(A) when recording at temperatures <25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) to SxS cards with lens, measured 1 m/3 feet from the image plane"< Eric
  24. >Camera self noise is around -20dB or just under at 24FPS in RAW mode< -20 ?
  25. it used to be easy mic cables and a few gazintas/gazaoutas and we were set and then came ta3's and ta5's, timecode lemo and bnc, balanced, unbalanced, stereo, mono, padded red cables, sennheiser cables and now arri cables how do folks organize all these cables so they are findable and don't take up a pelican 1650 case ?
