Room Tone question from a unsure newbie
Corbin replied to JeffWWaldrop's topic in General Discussion
You want to get Jay’s book if you’re a relative novice. I did. It is very comprehensive and beautifully written and organized. You won’t know what you don’t know until you read his book. If you have questions about room tone, you’re likely going to have questions about other things too. Rather than getting your information piecemeal, get this book. The other book suggested seems a bit advanced and perhaps overly-narrow in scope for what you want and need right now. -
Saw this again last night—it had been years. Very nice work by Jeff and Don. It must have been a surreal experience. Sellers supposedly never broke character on set (except for outtakes, like those tacked on during the credits). Beautiful film.

Movies about sound or field recording (nature/ambience)

"Diva," which chronicles a young French man obsessed with an American opera singer who has never been recorded live in performance. He tapes her surreptitiously with a Nagra IV-S (I think). We never see the mic(s). That sets the stage for a mistaken-identity plot line. Good (revised: indeed, cheesy as hell) film. -
Trew Audio, Ontario, has a used one....

Has anyone ever bolted a lockbox in the trunk? Could not protect everything, but perhaps recorders and radio mics at least?

I did buy an SD SATA adapter and tried to pair it with an SSD--a top of the line Sandisk. The power to the drive kept cutting out. I removed the SSD and replaced it with a 320 GB spinner and it has worked fine.

Reviving an old thread. Received this case today, and I have to say, I was REALLY surprised at the quality and functionality. IMO it's worth more than $115 delivered. This is not a cheap or flimsy case. It weighs 19#. The wheels are high quality. The telescoping handle is high quality. The drawers are not cardboard. Not sure what they are, but they are sturdy and covered in durable nylon with aluminum faceplate. The top comes off and there is a nice space for a small bag: 14.24" W x 7.25"D x 2.25"H. Many thanks to the OP for this link. I don't need a big expensive cart, at least right now, and this will definitely last for awhile. Did give my daughter the included mirror, however. It's called bipolar disorder (it used to be called "manic depression.") You can guess which phase of the illness they're in.

Small and cheap portable speakers for laptop (and student)?
Corbin replied to Jim Feeley's topic in The Post Place
I have these for my computer and they sound really good. Build quality is quite good as well. http://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-Premium-Powered-Desktop-Speakers/dp/B000VKEFN2 -
A Naztech PB15000 is a cheap ($75) and reliable battery that can power the 680 for many hours. I've used them with my 788 with no problem. I get a good 3-4 hours running 8 channels, so you should do at least as well. Keep the battery compartment full for easy switches. Naztech includes tips that work fine with the 680. corbin

I'm sure vinyl will still be played in 100 years by dinosaurs like me.

A decent, cheap set of pencils you should consider are Avantone CK-1. For $300 a pair, they come with omni, card and hyper caps. A giant-killer IMHO, and better than Oktava, and I've owned the Joly-modded Oktavas. They also have a five-year warranty.

IMHO, the Fostex is probably the most robust and well-established of the three. It's been around quite awhile. The build quality and pres are decent for the price.

Bill used to allow low-profile taping (no mic stand, mics on clothing) but that was years ago. Now he has stated no taping at all. This is a multicam, and semi- to pro-shot. The audio may a mix of a board feed and room mics. Looks like someone got their signals crossed, though.

I regret the title of the post , but it was just a reflection of my ignorance about film sound. Great posts! -

I had never seen what film mixing for dialogue actually looks like in real-time. Thanks for the explanations, folks! -
Background: I have some audio knowledge, but probably less than 99% of all of you when it comes to film sound. Clip: Question: What is going on in this clip?!!!!! Why is the mixer/recorder manipulating the faders on nearly every syllable of the actors' lines? Wouldn't this be audible? What is the purpose? Is this SOP for you guys? What am I missing? This clip has bothered me since I saw it a year ago. The guy is using an Aaton Cantar, so one would assume he knows his stuff. Appreciate you all helping to solve the mystery.

An Oade-modified Marantz PMD661 works very well in this capacity. Oade can customize the gain structure, too. XLR, phantom, great machine. No limiter, though.
