    SD A20 Nexus

Since using the Nexus requires the use of A20 or similar transmitters, it seems reasonable that a discounted grouping of an 8 receiver Nexus along with 8 transmitters (with up to a 16 device configuration) might be something reasonable to expect in the future? Since many users have a series 8 currently but a different brand of transmitters/receivers, it is a pretty big jump to change to an "all Sound Devices" implementation without such an incentive.
  2. I purchased an 833 when first available, so it was less expensive, but the warranty how now expired. I have some concerns that if this expansion update is purchased as well as others for noise reductions, that I will be adding to the cost significantly of a device where these add ons are not transferrable and if service is needed for some reason it might be very expensive, and thus users will be left in an awkward position. Perhaps SD should consider extending the warranty for an additional year when paid upgrades to capability are purchased, or offer extended warranties as a paid option in this circumstance? I know from experience and reputation that these devices are very robust, but that is another reason that SD could make such an offer, since their overall risk is pretty low.
  3. I wonder if SD is going to also come out with a "20" series receiver, perhaps 4 channel (hint is the A20s transmitter has an option for an 8 transmitter charger which would work nicely with 8 A20's and perhaps a pair of A20-RX 4 channel receivers X2 in the SL-2)?
  4. THIS JUST POSTED BY SD ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE, MIXPRE-3 II AND 833 PRODUCTION ON HOLD "Hello Sound Devices family. Due to global semiconductor shortages, we have sadly been forced to put production of the 833 and MixPre-3 II on a temporary hold. We expect we will be able to restart manufacturing the 833 in November. We don’t have a restart date for the MixPre-3 II yet but we will let you know as soon as possible. The MixPre-3 II and 833 are *not* being discontinued. We will continue manufacturing them as soon as our parts arrive! Other 8-Series and MixPre II Series mixer-recorders will not be affected. Some of our resellers still have 833s and MixPre-3 IIs in stock. Thank you so much for your support during these shortages. We appreciate you all!"
  5. Again, not an expert and no horse in this race but reading your link, it appears that the newly accepted claims included this as the central construct: said at least one remote recorder receiving said locally generated audio and remotely recording said locally generated audio as remote audio data; receiving said stamped local audio data, and replacing a portion of said remote audio data with said stamped local audio data. As I suspected, this patent seems to require timecode and the substitution of locally recorded data with remotely recorded data based on that timecode sync, (and this interaction is throughout the analysis) which can be combined when there is data dropouts/corruptions/etc. I don't know whether it is non-obvious but it is clever and potentially useful. It seems to me that a system that does not use timecode would be outside of this entire discussion? But then again, I might have missed something important.
  6. I am not a patent attorney either, but have some direct experience with patent litigation. Just because someone has a patent, does not mean it cannot be challenged, or subject to a "re-examination", which is not that uncommon. The test for patents is obviousness, so the question is whether having a transmitter that also records not "obvious" to someone skilled in the art. I don't really know in this case, or if there is something else key in the patent(s) besides recording such as linking the recording with timecode to the transmitted signal, etc. In any event, this Rode product seems like a clever and inexpensive way for someone using a DSLR or iPhone to record decent audio in a no-brainer sort of way, but not a replacement for real productions, ever.
  7. Thank you for this reminder, it is much appreciated. My plan would be to use the NR to the L/R bus but keep the iso channels untouched and have all available for post. In addition, at the same level of NR, about -4 to -6db (most that seemed reasonable) I noticed that there was more NR with the Noise Assist, but it sounded to impact the voice more, whereas when I turned on and off the NR with Cedar, I could barely hear a difference in the voice (my own) but I am sure there is some impact. Again Philip, thank you for your valuable knowledge and help.
  8. I installed 7.41, it seems to run well and it is now easy to toggle between the two noise suppression options. I tried recording with both a cos11 and MKH 50 with A/C noise, background noise from a cell phone playing city sounds and outdoors wind noise. I thought that the SDNX was significantly better in all cases and seemed to interfere with the voice much less, but again, it would be nice to hear from others what their experience are now that it can be evaluated. I might spring for the SDNX - it is pretty amazing.
  9. OK, my opinion, we got what we paid for buying the 8 series with the specs it included. Because it is powerful enough to add apps that cost extra, this doesn't mean that they should be freebees, and in fact I think the profit margin was likely less than one might imagine on the units but higher on add on software and hardware (SL-2 or CL-16). That being said if anyone is taking it in the shorts it is the retailers that sold the units, they don't get a cut of these apps extras even though they sold the original units. I think Gotham Sound has more of a gripe than I do. All that being said, any opinions on the usefulness of SDNX vs Noise Assist?
  10. Any thoughts on SDNX vs Noise Assist and why the former is better? I tried both on my 8 series and it seemed that the SDNX did not change the volume of the vocal signal but reduced the background A/C whereas the Noise Assist works well but in comparison creates a lower level and when this is cranked up to match that of the SDNX then one starts to hit the limiter and the noise, although still reduced, is louder and harsher than SDNX. At three times the price, it is hopefully better, any "experts" here have some input on the comparison?
  11. I will say that I just looked at the SD remote that is now included for iPhone in this version, and it is quite brilliant.
  12. you are right it was 4K but I traded in my 633 so around that much. I just think it is a little pricey for a feature upgrade, but many might disagree. At that schedule I would never buy more than two instances for L/R.
  13. Good news, SD released 8 series 7.20 today. Bad news, noise assist, which now can cover 8 channels costs $2000 for that version, almost as much as my 833 was to purchase.
  14. I did some research looking at UV lights for my surgery center, here is what I learned. While UV C probably would kill Covid-19 effectively, it has to be directly exposed on the item and not in any shadows. That obviously poses some limitations. More importantly, while UV-C lights that are in "fluorescent" type tubes are the real deal (200-280nm), many of the supposed LED UV lights are fakes from China, and do not have germicidal effect, not saying that was what is in the box mentioned, but they are LED type bulbs. The fluorescent type tubes are very hard on skin and eyes, and degrade some materials rather quickly. There are some UV LED's but quite expensive. There is a new wavelength of 222nm that is made by Ushio (also fluorescent type) and will be available in products at some point which is skin and eye safe. I think wipes, with something like Cavicide are the best option for cleaning surfaces, or regular Clorox wipes.
  15. I got it running on an iPad Pro - very low latency and nice menu integration.
  16. The CL 12 is not a currently offered product, so unless you happen to have one, it does not really help an 833 owner. Yes, one might be had used, but not a good solution for a new product line of the 8 series. While it is true that this is overkill for an 833 in terms of capacity, it should still work should someone be so inclined, the architecture between the three machines is pretty similar and so far they all run the same software.
  17. I agree, purchased the 833 just before the 888 was announced, and although it is fine for my needs now, had assumed all the "8" series goodies would be compatible. Had I known of the new CL16 not being compatible (which was pre-announced at the time of my purchase) I would have waited and purchased the 888 instead. Like I said, probably not going to impact me much, but for others I can understand some heartburn.
  18. I received the AES device today, and installed on my 833. I had to slightly rearrange my bag to compensate for the "bump". It auto-recognized the XL-AES and I set up channels 5/6 for AES wireless (instead of 1/2). Now I have 4 channels of analog and last 2 for wireless with controls. Interestingly (at least to me) I set up channel 8 as USB connecting through the USB C port. With this I can connect to my laptop and both import and export, for instance with Logic Pro X talent can hear a project playing through the headphones and simultaneously record on a track. Likewise, I can route track(s) simultaneously through the USB port and they show up on Logic Pro. I know the mix-pre does this and maybe easier and for a lot less money, but it is nice to have such capability when needed. Also of interest, it does seem to run significantly cooler and I think the battery will last longer with the new firmware.
  19. New firmware was released to allow connection to the AES input device, but I don't see the documentation regarding implementation or routing of this capability on any of the 8 series. Just found it
  20. Now showing on SD website, now showing for pre-sale on Gotham Sound ... XL-AES $195.00.

OK $3795 for the MCR 52 but $4745 for the MCR 42. I have one set with the MCR 42 and really like it so if I was to get a second set it would be with that. I believe when I purchased this set originally it was even a better offer, but that was when they were first introducing Wisycom to the US market.

Where is that package deal if I might ask? I did one of those a few years ago, love the Wisycom, might want to get a second set.
  23. From Massimo Polo at Wisycom, "Remember that each time u reduce the squelch of 3dB is like having a transmitter twice powerful!". I have this system and at 50mw have not yet found any drop off of signal at reasonable distances. If you reduce the default squelch from 12dB to 9 dB it is effectively like a 100mw transmitter and with these settings I have never seen interference. It is really quite amazing how well this wireless works. The beta software on the receiver lets you monitor quite a few functions real time including RF level. I am quite happy with the system although can only compare it to Sennheiser G3, to which is not even close. I am sure the professional Lectro systems are great also.
