  1. Ha, yes I mic'ed a dog once for a Purina Puppy Chow commercial. Director wanted the food chomping sounds. I said how about a take without the camera rolling just for me and my boom when the scene is finished. He said we dont have the time. Lav the dog. I hesitated... and mic'ed the dog. I have no idea if it was used. Never saw the commercial.

Also, I end up mic'ing crickets, cicadas, owls, etc. without even trying. Well, they make it on the track anyway.

  2. Philip,

Yes, too many "lav everyone" jobs in resent years. I get that mindset for reality shows but not narratives. I have seen a couple dramatic TV shows in the past year in which the actor's exterior location performance sound (whispering) is so pristine and doesn't vary with camera distance that it is totally distracting. Completely unnatural. I dont think it was ADR'ed. I am sure the post sound guy/gal was very pleased with his/her accomplishment but I sure think it was 100% captured with lavs and very sterile sounding.

A good boom person and proper mix, IMO,  makes for a far more pleasing and natural dialog track.

I say this as the UPM says, "Hey, I can save $600/day if I cut the boom op."

The new Relacart PM-320R is an excellent new option for those looking to run some cheaper IEM receivers with their existing Sennheiser transmitters. Up until now a popular option to achieve this has been the LD Systems receivers, however these do have their limitations, especially regarding frequency compatibility in the GB band. Currently the LD Systems only have 2MHz of crossover with the GB band (606-608Mhz), causing a lot of people to choose the band E option. This obviously isn’t ideal if you are already running transmitters in GB band. A few customers have also been slightly put off by the plastic construction of the LD Systems.

    No personal experience.

Relacart PM-320R! First and foremost, we’ve partnered with Relacart to have these IEM units custom-tuned to the exact same frequency bands as the Sennheiser transmitters, currently stocking band GB (606-648Mhz), B (626-668MHz) and E (823-865MHz). This is excellent news for everyone as you don’t need to compromise with 2MHz crossover or having to buy a separate transmitter on a completely different frequency band.

The build quality of the units should instil a bit more confidence as they are mostly made up of a single piece aluminium shell, with solid buttons/knobs and whips that feel like they should last.

  4. I remember a Frank Zappa interview from many years ago in which he was asked about using the new Mellotron and synthesizers to emulate an orchestral sound in his work. This was during his fight with local government and Studios who were pushing restrictions on home studios with zoning laws.

He said the new tech was creatively freeing and didn't require union breaks.

Production and Post workflows will definitely change and actors will strike to restrict the cloning/reproduction of their performances. Oh wait, they are.

  5. I just completed revisions on 21 five minute interactive muliimedia training modules for one of my clients. Three years ago I hired four voice artists for the original project.

Re-voicing all the changes plus recording time would have cost around $3k. I did it with a high quality real-time AI voicing website for $50. Plus my editing time. I can't tell you how much of it was actually AI vs HQ voice synthesis. The term AI is often misused.

I could change gender, ethnicity, timbre, speed, emphasis, pause length, etc all on the website interface. Then tweak the .wav export in Adobe Audition for timing to video and gfx.

There was a learning curve to get the voice synthesis to pronounce some technical terms correctly but not as bad as when I used to use the Votrox SC-01 voice synthesizer when designing games for the Tandy TRS80 and CoCo Computers in the 80's.

  6. Bob K,

I applaud you for reading contracts. So many people do not.

I too work for Assignment Desk and they pay me via Stripe. Four times in just the past five months.

However, I don't pay any processing fees. The client pays all fees and I have them direct deposit in an isolated bank account with "deposit only" status specifically insulating this account from my other accounts. Plus, I get notified of the electronic deposite as soon as it happens and transfer the new funds to a different account. My ISO account then has $0 and zero risk of shenanigans.

No problems over the past several years of doing this.

Follow up after looking at my Stripe Account. Each transaction says this:

    Amount: $xxxx.xx

    Fee: $0

    Status: Successful

    Metadata: blah blah blah

  7. If you are outside, yeah, probably fine with a senny scan but if you are in a ballroom check frequently. I have been boned more than once by a venue next to me or several rooms away firing up their gear after I preset my freqs and they end up stepping on me.

  8. OB1,

That has to be the cleanest looking 664 I have seen in years, lol. Sorry to say mine has some of the lettering rubbed off and gets quite dusty frequently here in Iowa. Used purely for bag work out in the wilds.

I pre-ordered it when announced. Still a reliable workhorse.

  9. When I first started out, before electric light bulbs, I bought a 416 and an 816. I still have them both and they still make it to set when I am sportsing or shooting in bad weather. Great bad weather mics. Definitely not indoor mics in reflective environments.

  10. Lara,

This is a known issue when powering the mixer/recorder and an unbalanced sound source (G3/G4) from the same power supply, i.e. using battery eliminators in the Sennies. In the early days of my mixing career I had G3s and fought this issue. I am surprised to hear that you DIDN'T hear the buzz in the beginning.

    Things that help are:

    1) DC to DC isolation transformer in the  power distribution chain

    2) always feed mixer/recorder with line level from the Sennies so the signal to buzz ratio is greater ( your mixer won't be amplifying the buzz as it does in mic level feed)

    3) upgrade to balanced output wireless receivers or use two seperate power sources.

  11. I have worked on House Hunters. Sometimes as the DP. Sometimes as the sound mixer. The situation is exactly as you described it in your original post.

I have had success connecting the output of my SD664 to the audio input of my Android phone. Call a phone or conference several phones in the chase car and bingo. Bob's your uncle.

  12. Oh my gosh. We had one of these at the NBC station I shot news at in the late 70's. We plugged it into our Frezzolini 16mm, mag sound cameras (with augenieux crank zoom lens). Back then I had no idea what an interference tube was but I think this has one. As I remember it had a 2-pin screw-on connector to XLR cable.

It worked better than our other microphones (EV635) at picking up distant sounds but I was a snot-nosed kid back then, fresh out of college. What did I know. I can't remember the level of self or handling noise.

Thanks for the trip through memory lane.

    And it was HEAVY.

  13. I have taken very lucrative jobs with political clients whom I completely disagree with and later feel guilty that I may have had something to do with their current elected position. I didn't vote for them so I have that going in my favor but I helped spread their message.

But as one politician once told me after shooting her commercial and talking with her about her platform, "Well, you know it's all theater."

Now, I take their money and put it ALL into my over-priced Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance premiums (a result, in part, of the politician's policies). I guess I work for the GREEN party. U.S. greenbacks.

As for a religion you disagree with... that is tough. At least politician's get voted on every 2 or 4 years.

Maybe tell the client you first need to hook them up to this machine that measures their anxiety, guilt and bank account, lol.
