  1. You're both right! And for what it's worth, Jesse, you're totally leaving out the time you spend on: Shoot logistics/communication/coordination Gear maintenance/research Taxes Networking Paperwork/invoices Bill collection I'm sure there are things I'm forgetting. In order to be ready for those 2.4 days/week you do a hell of a lot of unbillable time. Owning a small business is no joke.
  2. Thanks Chris! There are a couple of white Sanken mounts in your future, I'll get in touch with you soon. I do make black & white for all models. I'm happy to note that these are now available at Location Sound in Los Angeles Sonotechnique in Montreal I'm in touch with retailers in the UK and Australia, so hopefully I will have good news on those fronts soon.
  3. GearEye looks really cool, but I'm not sure it will be good for finding lost stuff or doing anything beyond checking what's in a bag. RFID range depends on the frequency band they're using (here's a nice link if you want to read more http://www.impinj.com/resources/about-rfid/the-different-types-of-rfid-systems/) - basically the higher the frequency, the greater the range, but the tag has to be more specialized (antennas/power/etc) and metal interferes with higher frequencies. The LF band, which reads the best on metal, only has a range of 4 inches or so. So unless they have some magic up their sleeves, it could be a pretty limited system. I had this idea a couple years ago but never went beyond the very simplest research steps - very cool that these people followed through with it! I'm hoping they did work some magic because I want to use something like this.
  4. They sound OK, highlight HF problems like rustle and RFI, fold up, and take a beating. They have their shortcomings but they're the best compromise between usability and durability I know of.
  5. Oh man. If we could get some kind of group agreement to do this in certain cases. What a wonderful world
  6. Sort of an "en passent" move based on their employees' recent efforts to unionize. Gross.
  7. Take it out of Zaxconvert at 23.98 and use Wave Agent to change the framerate.
  8. Nice Benoit, sounds like a fun shoot! Glad my wireless have gone to a good and caring home.
  9. Hey Dan, thanks for getting some! White is already available. I could do a bunch of other colors, but it would have to be a minimum order of about 10. So if enough people comment here that you want a particular color I'll be happy to supply it.
  10. Try a Google search of the forum - there have been some good discussions on this. I've been on some small ocean boats but only for a day or two. I made Ziploc and gaff tape "cases" for my recorder, receivers, transmitters, etc. Not pretty but effective. The consensus here for really salty environments (i.e. surfing shows, etc) has been that you should try to get production to rent or buy you a kit for the show. It's long enough that it'll be worth it to them and to you. Salt water damage is insidious and irreversible.
  11. Maybe this is why I dislike my Eumels! Thanks guys. I currently have two PSC TA5f power supplies and like them very much.
  12. Thanks for the compliments! Glad they are working out for you. Hey Peter. These are very durable. I don't think you could "break" them without a blade. After the holidays I'm working on getting them to distributors in Canada and the UK. If you want to introduce me to a local distributor of yours, email me at Abe@abetek.co. Currently just through Pro Sound in the US. Thanks for your patience!
  13. It also mentions that sodium ions are 3x as heavy as lithium ions.
  14. Aftermarket add-ons and modifications are totally legal.
  15. Short answer: yes, but it's hard. The filaments I've worked with are either too brittle or too flexible to be an obvious solution. The shape of the printed object also suggests using dissolvable support structures in the print, which is more expensive and time-consuming. It's beyond my capabilities at the moment. That said, this is one of a few areas I'm looking to expand to. So maybe I'll have more to report after I get some time to experiment.
  16. Is the QRX line slated to get the new screen as well? They look great.
  17. Just to save some Googling, here's the procedure for a partial format: select the "format card" option. Instead of hitting the star key, hit the PFL key closest to the LCD screen. Hit it a second time instead of the star key and then a partial re-formatting will occur. As I understand it, this re-writes the "wrapper" data, but leaves any other information on the card alone.
  18. Huh. Scary stuff! I'm glad for dual media.
  19. No kidding. I was under the impression that a card reader is a pretty passive device. Can you tell me more?
  20. That's awful, completely needless suffering. I hope they get their union post haste.
  21. Jose, I really like your solution here, I think something more modular would work better for me. I mix Zax and Lectro radios between two bags and would like to be able to move them around easily. Something like what you've come up with would be great - Simon, you interested?
  22. The reason this question gets asked a lot is because there is no answer. Or rather, your answer will be different from everyone else's. Pretty much everything you said is good except for buying gear and praying. Rent or borrow gear until it makes sense to buy. If you want to work on big shows, get on big sets. Find the balance between observation and action. Be useful and indispensable. Find the right time to ask questions. Be early. Propose solutions instead of just identifying problems. Always look for ways to be worth more money, and learn to ask for it. Most of all be safe and have a good time - it can be a great job and a great life!
