  1. Thanks for all of the above comments, all very helpful. It'll allow me to make a much more informed decision on the purchase and what I should possibly pay for it. The issue for me is it's been owned by a company, hence it may not have been as lovely cared for over the years as I'd expect an individual owner to have. Again, thanks all.
  2. Hi all, I've looking at a used mkh50 that I don't know the history of. I'm still very new to location sound so don't know too much about the version history of these mics. Apart from listening to it and seeing the general cosmetic condition, is there anything I should be aware off. Do older versions lose any of their tone over time, or do they have RF issues? If I have the serial number can I check it's age anywhere? I've had a search online but as of yet haven't found anywhere. Any advice appreciated.
  3. Just pointed to this discussion to possibly help me deal with another issue regards a 442 and the dr60. What I can say about you discussion is that I run the ta3 mix out from my 302 into the 3/4 on the tascam and it handles it just fine. No need to dial back the 302 output. My current problem, though hopefull not a problem, is if I can run the direct outputs from my new 442 into the dr60 and not have any issues.
  4. I've got a 302 for sale and have a friend moving to Sydney early next year so could possibly have it hand delivered or an easier pickup arranged if interested. Checkout the for sale section and make an offer if you want. I'm a bit like you and just starting out. I'm doing location sound with post mixing and a bit of video production to make a living. I started with the 302, some old lectrosonics 195d radios, a tascam recorder and borrowed mic's from some generous friends. It's seen me through just fine and I'm slowly upgrading my kit as I know how much work I'll be getting and importantly what kind of work I'll be getting and hence my clients and therefore equipment needs. There's no point in getting all the best gear straight away if your clients don't require it (can't hear the difference) and you can't afford it. I've been using a me66 and for my clients it's fine. Just about to probably step up and buy a 416 as my clients are now expanding so I can afford it. I must say though that it does get tiring racing around to borrow/rent gear and makes you wonder about what my actually hourly is. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  5. Thanks very much, that's fantastic info. I'll have a crack at it myself as I need to start developing my soldering and cable making skills at some stage. I love this site and the generosity that people show in sharing their knowledge. Hopefully I'll be able to give back at some stage.
  6. I’m not to crash hot on the whole balance, unbalanced, line and mic level thing. I’m sure I have balanced/unbalanced sorted but not how it all combines with line & mic levels and wiring. Here’s what I need to do. I have a 442 and a Tascam Dr-60. I want to be able to record the 4 direct outputs to the Tascam which has 2 x XLR inputs and a 3.5mm jack for channels 3&4. So the variety of input types has sticked me up a bit. The 2 x XLR inputs can be selected between line or mic. The 3.5mm mini jack is/can only be unbalanced line level, correct? So to get everything matching as best as possible I’ll need to change the 442 settings so that the outputs are line level. The cables that take the 442 direct outputs 1&2 will be wired normally. The cable that takes the 442 direct outputs 3&4 will be wired unbalanced, by floating pin-3. Does floating mean, not connecting, or other? Have I got this right. Relevant manual images below. Any help appreciated.
  7. More great comments thank you. It's good to have the reasons for the differing opinions. Really I just need to, as always suspected, get a hold of each and play/listen to them and make a judgement on what my ears prefer. Currently that's the 60, based on the link that Johnny provide above. While a YouTube clip is not the best source for critical listening, it was a good starting point for me. Also the lower noise is of benefit to me as I'll also use it for foley recording. Hopefully I'll have the 60 to experiment with next week.
  8. Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. I've taken onboard that the 416 is definitely the favoured option so will probably be heading in that direction, but will do my best to try and have a listen to both first.
  9. Hi all, I'm a relative newbie and am looking to purchase my first boom mic, either a used mkh60 or new 416, to replace the me66 that a good friend lends me. I do corporates, no TV or film and don't see that changing anytime soon. I also do post mixing so would be using the mic for the occasional bit of foley recording. I've done some research here but always appreciate any further advice/comments. I know some don't seem to like the mkh60. I have limited access to both mic's for auditioning tests. What would you say are the pro & cons of either that I should be aware off. Obviously either will be a step up from the me66, which to be honest has been perfectly fine for the type of work that I do and my clients. I was going to just buy the new 416 but then the used mkh60 has turned up as an option as it's basically the same price and comes from a good and trusted home. As above, any thoughts and comments appreciated. JRL
  10. Thanks for the comments. You've basically confirmed what I was thinking and shall begin my hunt for a used set in the blocks I require.
  11. I'm after some advice on the lectro 100 series. My questions are: Would this be a better buy than a Sennheiser G2/G3? Does the Tx have a limiter? I've found differing answers in my searches, but they're from sources that I don't trust. Do they come in blocks lower than 27, I can,t seem to find any used ones for sale below this.
