For recorders, if you're only utilizing 1 or 2 microphones, the new tascam FR-AV2 and the Zoom F3 are both really good, really small options. -
Did you ever decide if you were going to make these a product? I'm currently looking for a bag for my r4+

X-Y, if done correctly, can be mathematically converted into mid-side, and is exactly as mono compatible as mid-side is. Near coincident techniques such as DIN, NOS, and ORTF are less so.

I've had great results from the Sony WH1000s and WF1000s, and the current air pod pros from apple. The noise canceling is very effective, and the transparent mode is good at reducing noise while still letting you be aware of your surroundings.

Using the headphone control, I turn off mic inputs from the headphones, and the hiss goes away completely, even if I turn the headphones up to +24. I usually run them at -20.
-
Ok, listening I can hear some hiss at -20db volume on the JH13s. I'd never noticed it before, it's very quiet at that level. If I turn the mic preamps off, it goes away.
-
are you powering it via usb or internal battery? My m2d2 has a silent headphone amp (that sounds particularly good) with my JH13s.
-
or just put your phone in airplane mode while recording. That's what I do.
-
my understanding is the potential problem is at the louder end of things, so you'd probably not notice the difference in most testing.
-
from page 29 of the manual, the tascam x8 has a choice between 24v or 48v phantom power.

I wanted DPA to reterminate my mmp-gs cables with microdot (the cable was damaged just above the connector) and they wouldn't. Just a data point. The charge to NOT reterminate my cables was more than $50 per cable as a diagnosis fee. I'd sent them pictures of the damage before hand. Does anyone know someone who would?
-
a little heat shrink and some tech flex and that can easily become 1 cable with a Y at either end...
-
To circle back on this one: the headphone amp in the m2d2 combined with my IEMs (jh audio jh13) make for a dandy listening environment.
-
right the phone is a bit bucket for redundancy and convenience. The m2d2 also has a headphone jack, and I'm assuming (I hope reasonably) that combined with my reasonably good headphones, will make for good mobile listening.

sonosax - gets me the sonosax preamps, digital conversion, and aes and usb outputs, so I can record simultaneously to a digital recorder (spdr or nagra) and my iphone. Basically, small and flexible, don't always need the big recorder. It's an alternative to the dpa d:vice nagra - 4 preamps, and 2 line or 4 aes inputs. So with the sonosax I get 6 channels of preamps, or just the nagra, I get 4, plus 2 line level inputs And it lets me compare for myself the sound of the sonosax vs the nagra preamps and converters Plus, I got the pair of them for less than the R4+. I wouldn't have been happy with the US version of the r4+ because of the patent issue, and I found a deal on the nagra.
