  1. MM1 is a great thing to have for problem solving.
  2. I was looking at these in-line boosters to boost the gain on my slate mic into the weak slate mic input of a 664 but couldn’t find one that says it would work with only 12V of phantom or had an external input. If anyone has one of these things (lots of different makes and models, I see Sescom has one now too) and a 664 and would be willing to do a test Is appreciate it. I ended up using an MM1 for the purpose but it’s way overkill
  3. That’s a pretty good system. I’ve never done that because at the end of the day whoever is handling the data delivery just wants your card immediately and wouldn’t want to wait on file management but doing just the wild stuff separately and getting it to post directly makes sense to me. The times I’ve done something out of the ordinary for music or ambience I usually have the producer note it in their field notes and I also send an email later explaining but I like your method better I think.
  4. Bouke, I usually try to just name the file something obvious like “AMBIENCE-1.wav” or “ROOMTONE-01.wav”. Or if it happens in the middle of a scene I might try to add a note in the file if there’s time. Is that the kind of thing you’re talking about? On the docs I’ve worked on a traditional sound report would be pretty impractical at least for my brain. Also, regarding MS for docs.. in my experience this is not something producers are aware of in the US. I’ve never gotten a request for stereo anything ever! I’ve only done stereo recording for live music and only because I’ve decided to do it! I think the ship has probably sailed when it comes to getting doc sound recordists to run with MS rigs here at this point. Unless they’re requesting it and offering a bump to the rental!
  5. not really sure what you mean. I was referring to the older design with the full size piano that required you to stretch rubber bands (o-rings) around to connect the top and bottom shells. Annoying. Especially if you’re trying to be quick. The new design is much easier you just press the top and bottom together with no parts to lose.
  6. It’s fine. Not as simple as using a Rycote but there’s no comparison with wind and shock mount performance. The pianissimo has gotten easier to use than the older piano since they did away with the annoying rubber O-rings that were used to hold the thing together I hated those o-rings and most of them are lost now.
  7. I’ve used both a bunch mostly with the CMIT and I would agree the Cosi is great for light wind days or even decent breeze but if there’s serious wind you need a full blimp. I also agree that if you get the full pianissimo you should skip Cinela’s fur and try the bubblebee offering. While I haven’t tried the new bubblebee fur covers myself I can say that the thickest Cinela fur kills a lot of presence and made dialog sound dull. If you’re using mics with presence boost maybe you can work around it but I think there must be better more transparent furs available. Last thought.. a Schoeps CMC is kind of small inside a pianissimo and I don’t think you can reconfigure it to scoot it forward like you can in a Rycote so for booming dialog you’ll always be losing a couple inches distance compared to other products. Sometimes that makes all the difference outside.
  8. I think the more (potentially) consequential debate is to ground the shell or not.
  9. I had this same thing happen to me once with a 688. I retired the card to the trash can and always made sure to dual record ever since. Has never happened again in many years with various 6-series. Also, I always turn in the SD card and then backup the CF to my personal backup.
  10. It totally depends where you are. I see you live in Nashville, why don’t you go to Trew Audio and spend some time talking to them about what works best in your area.
  11. Where are you getting this? All of Comtek’s current base station style transmitters can output at least 100mW whether 72-88 or 216 range. Those are all considered VHF.
  12. Anyone know what’s the max diameter axle that will fit inside the void of a 1x2 10 series extrusion?

  14. That’s pretty cool! Nice work.
  15. Agreed. But it’s hard to find a for sale listing online for this variant.
  16. So I knew that you could order PR-216’s in the TV5/6 band but apparently you can also get them in “72-76” to use that band as well with the better receiver performance of the PR-216. I’m not talking about the PR75a. Did anyone know this? None of this is on Comtek’s website but they confirmed the existence of this in an email to me the other day. What’s a little unclear still is if these work in narrowband or wideband or companded or not. https://www.adorama.com/ctpr216b7276.html
  17. I’d love to see some photos of that rig!
  18. I don’t think there’s an approved list but if I were you I’d try something more mainstream like a Samsung. I’m using it pretty successfully on an old Samsung Tab E which has micro USB. Occasionally the live view mode will crash if I press too many buttons while scanning or if I switch apps and try to come back to it. Otherwise works great and that thing is like 6-7 years old and was pretty basic even when it was new.
  19. I had the same error message with an old android phone (Motorola droid turbo) and it just didn’t support OTG fully.
  20. Well the president of the company did the video interview with Gotham where he said they could basically tune them to whatever band. Their official website indicates that ordering them in TV5/6 is also an option so I’m just guessing here but I suspect if you contacted them and asked for a different band it might be possible. We’ll see. I expect it would be a factory mod to get it changed to something different. I’m not on Facebook anymore but thanks for the link. Also, they demo the voice prompt control in the video so I’d say that rumor is confirmed.
  21. In the interview Gotham did Glenn said it was possible to order it in custom frequency bands as a special order.
  22. Glad to hear that 13 hours is conservative. Glenn, you mentioned in the Gotham interview that, potentially, a VRX1 could be programmed for different frequency ranges. Can you elaborate on that? For example, if I’m able to order a few custom units to operate in the older 72-76 band or maybe TV5/6 could I later have them re-tuned to 216 or 944? Would this just be a firmware update or a hardware swap? Which brings another question about.. Could the VRX work with Lectrosonics IFB mode transmitters?
