  1. I don't know off hand. Sound Devices has amazingly thorough user manuals available on their website. I'd read it.
  2. I would think the more interesting question is whether to use the 442's matrix and bypass the Neumann or use the Neumann box? I wonder if there is a discernable quality difference either in the stereo image (doubt it) or in noise floor (seems possible). In regard to how to deliver the recording (as ms or as xy) I would contact the post staff and defer to their preference.
  3. I still think the DR680 and a lockitbox could be a good option.. 6 tracks, TC, under 2k total. Avid can bring in Aux TC from an audio track and I believe FCP has a plug-in available as well.
  4. I wired audio for a surgery shoot a while back.. Had much success rigging a cos-11 up in the surgeon's cap. I used a beige colored one and poked the tip out about 3mm right at his temple. Sounded great, was practically invisible, and allowed all manor of clear plastic face masks, and paper masks to go on and off and maintained consistent sound. Same concept as the middle of forehead, though my gut feeling is that I would find having a lav at the middle of the cap distracting for the wearer but maybe not... Absolutely rig everything carefully before the surgeon goes into the sterile field as you will not have access after that. Forget about any kind of chest mount, paper smock will make it useless. Install fresh batteries, and break out the lithiums if you got 'em! Good luck. P.S. I was also allowed to boom overhead above the surgery (I was surprised) and I used my Schoeps MK41 with the GVC swivel and a B5D foam to keep a low profile and was able to sneak in and out around all the lamps and gizmos. Sounded great! Picked up lots of fun sounds (bzzzzz, glops, bzzz,) and lines from other surgeons, nurses, etc who weren't wired. I doubt they would let a fur covered mic anywhere near the surgery site, but they seemed to think the above rig was fine.
  5. With thunder bolt and a faster cf card I would think your Lacie rugged drive will soon be the bottleneck. SSDs are more affordable all the time.. eSATA and USB3 are fast as well though not yet sported in Mac land. Also, likely they will never be supported by apple unless a third party makes a thunderbolt to usb3 adapter, which seems likely.
  6. Dr680 and wire a lockitbox into one of the audio channels? Could do the same for the cameras that aren't keeping accurate sync. Lockit box rentals or purchase prices add up fast though.
  7. Wow, that's bizarre. Maybe try terminating the SMA connector for the Zaxnet transmitter. Even though it's not a functional feature yet perhaps there is still power routed to it and it's spewing rf like crazy. Otherwise that's disappointing as supposedly the nomad is designed to be without significant rf emission. I know that for the qrx it is officially recommended to always have the ifb antenna screwed in place or to turn off the ifb feature completely otherwise the rf could overload the uhf board. On a related note, I've found that the 552 has some rf seepage as well though I suspect it is due to switching regulator noise from the shared battery system.... Still troubleshooting that one.
  8. Check out this thread I started a few months back. (provided by google cache as this discussion seems to have gotten lost in the site switch over) http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:nInEo1g3NiwJ:jwsound.net/SMF/index.php%3Ftopic%3D7295.0&hl=en&gl=us&source=android-browser-type&strip=1 Mostly the idea was bashed by the senator but a couple of good responses. The best I ever came up with on my own was a service called iPadio that allows you to stream a live phone call instantly. Basically you dial their special phone number, enter your pass code and the call audio uploads instantly and is available live via a unique url to anyone on earth with a web browser. Pretty cool. Also allows you to upload audio recordings to be streamed after the fact.
  9. And even city to city... For example, Chicago has a rental tax (i don't recall the exact percentage) that gets added on to any equipment rental. I've heard this is why the large rental houses in the area (VER, etc..) are all located just outside of the city limits.
  10. I can report that I could not get it to run on Linux via Wine.
  11. Are you sure the teradeck cube system doesn't already transmit audio? Are you sure the teradeck cube system doesn't already transmit audio?
  12. Hey PWS! (professional wireless systems, maker of IAS) If you're listening I have three words for you! Smart. Phone. App. I would pay quite a bit for it... I'm sure many others would as well.
  13. What is 695's geographical jurisdiction? Just California?
  14. If you're speaking strictly terminology my understanding is that audio refers to electrical signals like in a device and sound is the phenomena of our brain interpreting the signals received via the ear. So you would say "audio circuit" and not "sound circuit" and you would say "what's that sound?" and not "what's that audio?". Now, what connotations the two terms have within the film and tv industry is another interesting question. I tend to agree, I prefer sound mixer but I feel that "audio" is more common in TV parlance.
  15. I've been using a standard 32gb San disk card for all of 2011 with no issues whatsoever. I opted to get the standard blue sdhc card instead of the extreme speed edition as that really seemed like overkill for a two track recorder. So far so good. I've recorded for multiple hours in one take with no issues. I also have a Kingston 32gb that seems to function just fine, though I haven't recorded on one nearly as much. I did have trouble with a Transcend brand 8gb card that I used for years with no issue on my zoom recorder but with the 552 it was dysfunctional and I lost some recordings. Best advice is to stick with a trusted brand (though I really don't think extreme speed is necessary for the 552), and backup to other media when you can. At least until you feel you can trust the card. I think card capacity is totally a user preference thing. Personally, I prefer the 32gb and will probably buy the 64gb cards when they come down in price. I guess I just like the idea of having a "bottomless pit" of recording capacity, not sure why, just one more thing to not worry about I guess.
  16. Is the mini mini mainly designed as a windscreen or is it also intended to dampen clothing noise?
  17. Thanks for the ideas, folks. If and when I get to the bottom of it I will post what I found out. I'm going to see about getting some of the older receptacles replaced, they drive me crazy anyway.
  18. Hey iMac users, I have an iMac from about 2007 that just started shutting itself down randomly. In the middle of normal operation it will just go black as if the power cord was yanked from the wall. Other electronics on the same surge protecting power strip continue to operate normally. After the crash pressing the power button starts up the iMac normally. No warning messages from the OS appeared either before or after the "crash". The only other x-factor is that this behavior just started since I moved to a new apartment and i'm suspicious that the electrical system in the house is old and maybe causing the protective circuits built into the iMac's PSU to trip. Voltage fluctuations or something. A lot of the outlets in the apartment are the old two-prong style and a few even tested neutral reversed... Maybe the iMac is just not made to last? Anyone have any suggestions for testing the electrical system in the house so that I can confirm or deny that suspicion? Thanks guys, DH And yes, I'll be contacting Apple tech support as well as my landlord regarding the electric but both of those will take some time. Just thought I'd ask you tech heads first
  19. Portabrace RB series overkill?
  20. I'll admit I do this sometimes as well. Can be a funny ice breaker too. Yes, wiring while wearing is not fun, ergonomic, or fast... though certainly hard to avoid sometimes.
  21. No display on the top surface of the receiver would be a deal breaker for me. Wider blocks is a great thing though.
  22. I mean how good can it possibly sound? It's the size of an ipod bud. Lavs do okay with the human voice but I wouldn't want to use them for sfx or music recording.
