  1. A few people have been emailing me about this. I have no problem doing this, but if you are interested just set up a cloud storage that can handle 6GB and share me on it and I will drop any installer people want.
  2. I have I have it email me and I'll find a way to get it to you if pindrop can't lostjusticesound at gmail.com
  3. I neglected to clearly state my highlight for this past year and not know how to edit my post on my iPad I will reply with another. My highlight is as follows. Finally making my commitment for my audio career to be focused on film and video. Being great full that I live in a country that after serving in the Navy for a limited time I am still able to benefit from free education. That I am able to use my skills as an audio professional to tell the stories of Veterans and continue serving this country in that manner. That I found this group early in my arrival here on the east coast and being welcomed into a privileged community that has knowledge about life that reaches far beyond signal flow, pick-up patterns, and timecode. And last but definitely not least. Making the risky move of leaving LA when there were clear opportunities open to me to forward my career and choosing to follow my heart to be with my wonderful girlfriend who I love and plan to marry. Sorry for the cheesy post Sincerely a bright eyed and bushy tailed rookie Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  4. I wish I could have been there. I used to work at Golds Gym Venice at the front desk. I left a year ago to come to NYC because I fell in love with a girl. I was always fighting myself to not be annoying to the mixers that would come in regularly with crews. Funny thing is I've gotten more work being in NYC then I ever did in LA, granted... I didn't find JWSound till I moved to NYC
  5. @Senator Hahaha you bring up a good point, I would say the DP's that I worked with that took the time to make sure the lighting was correct would have stand ins, the funny part they weren't always the actors and skin complextion and height wasn't the sam, still better then no one I guess? I have seen people spend lots of time lighting empty space and then everything changes once talent comes in, lol. This is why I have learn to wait until they are completly finished before I find my boom position.
  6. I see, I don't know enough about the coloring process in post since I am focused on sound and am just scratching the surface of learning about cameras. I came to this view point through the indie student world, where I have seen dp's spend a lot of time setting up lights to get everything looking right for the DSLR, I would guess this is what you are saying about ideal situations? That they are spending all that time to compensate? Thanks for the info, I learned a lot from the thread seeing production a little bit from the "other side of the isle" goes to show there is endless amounts of knowledge to learn and pick up. Having only worked with the Red a few times (and this was prior to me learning about timecode) we ran double system with a slate and it was a little indie production company that had just graduated out of school. Sync was no problem. Great info everywhere, agian Thanks for this forum! It has pushed me forward so much!
  7. What I find is amazing is that even with all the issues soundwise with DSLR's. I have seen a DP achieve (to my inexpeirenced eyes) the same quality of picture as the RED. Sure DSLR's arnt "4K" but does that really matter if what's in the frame is out of focus, or color looks horrible, etc. all 4K says to me is that their inexperience is just in a larger format and takes longer to render. This is why when I try to explain sound equipment to those filmakers willing to listen I like to relate things like mics to lenses and mic position to focus and the mix to the whole frame. At least this way they can in someway understand to some extent why I reccomend different equipment for different situations. If it's too sunny, you have to change the ISO on the camera or get shades, bounce boards, etc, if a location is windy or too much reverb there has to be equipment that deals with the environment. This way I feel they start to undertand that there isn't one piece of equipment that will solve all their problems and give them something to relate to which, I feel always helps things run smoothly.
  8. You can find some decent rents in West LA and Culver City area. That's where I just moved from so I know it very well. Culver City is nice and safe all those UCLA kids. Sometimes can be a hassle getting to the valley for work though, the freeways are no fun out there. Thus my new appreciation for the NYC subway
  9. I had a blast so much information! Very much appreciated all the time every spent explaining and giving advice.
  10. I had an awesome time, learned a lot. Can't wait for the next one. I have a lot to think about and mull over now. I feel very lucky to be a part of this community.
  11. Looking very forward to this can't wait!
  12. On most of the small indie stuff I prefer to do the post because I am still building my reel and resume and I prefer to do the sound editing so it showcases my production sound. I have found in the past something will happen when the editor does it or (in my case) the student director does post-sound somehow it doesnt come out the best.
  13. Mark, Not yet, this summer I'm set to do a feature for a student thesis, maybe two. There is a small production company that just started that some film student graduates and they have been doing well at finding investors and have some projects set for this summer as well. I am just trying to find out what I want my set up to be even if I rent, I got the h4n back when I started school and I honestly can't stand it but, If i can use it to get 4 channels of ISOs then I will use that with a rented mixer and mics until I have the money but in a few months I should have enough to purchase a 552. I did a gig and used the DR-680 without a mixer which was kinda annoying cause it only has one knob so it was a little frustrating to mix with. At the end of May I'm doing the 48 film fest which will just be 2 lavs and a boom. Might rent a 302 if I can get the producer to put up the money. I will keep you updated.
  14. Sen, Your statement about giving away gear on POS projects makes even more sense now, especially after reading that thread about rates. You read me well, I have been known to over think many of things in my life. I shall keep you updated, Thanks again
  15. As a newb it makes it much faster for me to simply click and gawk at the gear that I cannot purchase and also opens up my mind to something I may not know about and can go to a "usual suspect" to play around with it. I find them informative. Plus, I agree anything that supports this site is huge due to the fact that I've only been here since May 14th and my knowledge has grown vastly and to be able to participate in threads where all these professionals that I talk endlessly about to my girlfriend, who could care less about, communicate freely is mind boggling to me. One example is trying to explain to my girlfriend that Simon participates here since we went and saw Les Mis in dolby atmos and now we have to re-watch hundreds of movies now that I can read all your post and gain advice is still beyond me. Ads are not in the way, by all means i feel blessed that I do not have to pay to use this site where so many other places in this world take advantage.
  16. Tom, This is awesome advice to stumble upon, I apologize for directing the topic away from the original poster, Even after only 3 months of picking up indie gigs this sort of thinking is becoming more and more apparent to me. My wonder is if for my first purchase I should focus on saving up for mics and renting a recorder/ mixer from Gotham or buying something like a 552 and then renting the mics? It seems like everyone here in NYC wants to do "Run & Gun" in the low-budget world, which is where I am at. Senator, I currently own an H4n and I understand intimately why so many production sound recordist dislike the device having had to use it when I didn't have the option to check out a SD piece of equipment. While still sifting through the forum I am starting to formulate a thought process of using it for ISO 4 track via the external stereo 3.5" mic input under the XY built in condensers and the XLRs on the bottom. I was going to use this with say a 552 so I can gain the benefit of the SD pre-amps, and having a back up stereo mix or is this a wash cause of the quality of the H4n? Since I am in NYC in the low budget world I figure that editors will be using my mix track more than my ISOs which could be taken from the 552 if the editor so choses which would be better quality than the H4n. Also, sometimes I have the option to use the Tascam DR-680 with a brand new production company that has one and my thought process was going out the direct outs of the 552 to the DR-680 and my mono mix on track one thus, taking advantage of all 6 tracks of the tascam and 5 of the 552 and doing a hop out of the 552 with the many outs it has? Thus, saving me about about $2.5k on a Nomad or 664 and giving me time to wait for the next shinny multi-track recorder to come out as I grow as a mixer. What do you guys think? Robert, you guys are making me feel more and more confident about my path, again feeling very lucky to be a part of this forum. Love the feedback thanks so much!
  17. Thanks Senator, I have already been building a relationship at Gotham and like the people over there, I will expand my horizons and check out the other "usual suspects". I'm starting to feel like I should just keep renting till I have the money for a "proper mic" whatever that means... I know mics are like our cooking ingredients to make a delicious meal. So I'd rather not compromise and go for the healthy organic vegetables over the flavorless vegetables found at the discount food mart. That said, it's hard to start buying gear when you go to school and you are spoiled with SD products and many options for shotguns, lava, pzm and many other mics. Thus my journey continues. Thanks for the advice I have time to mull these things over, no major projects yet but summer is coming
  18. Wow! Invaluable thread, I understand that this hasn't been posted on in a while but I just spent the last few hours off an on reading this and my way of going about mixing I feel will be much better for the editor, myself, and post. Much more enjoyable. I am very new here and I'm sure you guys get this all the time from us new guys. This is amazing information to just have here for free and open to the public. I seriously hope to be an example and follow in your guy's footsteps as a young mixer. I can't express enough how much this group has benefitted me in just less than a week. There isn't enough time to absorb all the information here. For now I shall go back to listening thanks again
  19. Marc, I really appreciate the advice and after more reading on the forums I really should just be patient and rent gear from Gotham, I've been using 416s for the past 2 years i've been getting into this and I know the mic very well. It makes more sense to be patient and not rush, and in the mean time just keep renting as I have been doing but it's so hard. Still learning and absorbing, this community in the short week that I joined has already taught me so much then the past 2+ years I've trial and error doing this. Now it looks like I may miss the NYC mixer meet up too. WOAH is me LOL Thanks again, All roads lead to Gotham Sound
  20. I'm on an extreme budget and was thinking about purchasing this as my first mic. Now you got me worried about it not handling RF well. I personally like the warmth of it but maybe that is just my rookie ears. Maybe I should just save up and wait for a used 416? What do you guys recommend for an entry level guy needing at least one shotgun for these run and gun indie shoots? I assume maybe patience is just king. Guidance for this young patowan learner is much appreciated.
  21. Oh wow, I look at the date wrong thanks for the correction. I look forward to making it to this and meeting everyone.
  22. I just saw this now, unfortunately do we know when the next one will be?
