  1. ...and I found this. I'm probably not going to buy it any time soon, but it's so beautiful I had to share it. Reading the specs, it only takes .wav and .flac files. Any thoughts on it? <http://www.colorfly.eu/product_index.html>
  2. It seems like a wrist monitor like that would be too much of a crutch. I'd be far too tempted to stare at the monitor and play Ride-the-Line all day. My attention would be taken away from whether or not I'm on axis. The job of a boom operator is rarely to make sure that the mic LOOKS like it's in the right position, but that it SOUNDS right. It would make me reactionary instead of proactive. Granted, a small, portable monitor would be AWESOME to have on my person to look at just before the camera rolls. But having it in front of my face during a shot would be distracting. And even then, I'd rather just know the focal length - which I can easily ask for. A boom monitor would be the first thing cut in case of difficulties. If a boom op got used to it, then went suddenly without it, s/he would have to readjust. Another variable. Of course, there are countless times where I've wished I had a monitor in front of me... hence the temptation of such a device.
  3. The 90's were very different times. No need for assault.
  4. I'm a die-hard Metalhead. Krav Maga, video games, writing/literature. I used to paintball years ago. No idea why I stopped, it was super fun.
  5. Definitely check your local military surplus store.
  6. Thank you for the reminder, Senator. Lol yes, Google is my friend; and my friend generally redirects me to JWSG. That's what I was thinking too... However, after my research I'm starting to think that the phase issues I experienced are a pretty isolated event.
  7. Yes, I had a full blimp with dead cat. We were never close enough to the water for moisture to have really been an issue. Maybe it was just a fluke. Next time I see that mixer I'll ask him if he ever figured out what the issue was. This little dude looks awesome. What do you find yourself using it on? I've never worked with one before.
  8. Military Surplus (MS) Velcro Belt -Maglite LED Flashlight -MultiTool - Zillatool (Highly recommended) -MS pouch - Headphones- Sony MDR-7506 - Sharpie - Transpore - Clif Bar - Gum/mints - Laser pointer - Battery checker - ~x4 AA batteries (depending on gear) Pockets/On My Person - Baseball hat - Bandanna - Pen - toothpicks - business cards - cell (for callsheets/other docs) - Shamwow - Don't laugh. This thing comes in SO handy, SO often. - Hairties MS Radio Bag (generally stays in the truck) - 20' XLR - 20' 1/8" headphone extension - 3-way headphone splitter - Velcro cable ties - Caribiners w/ velcro straps - Extra pens, sharpies, different colored high-lighters - Blue paper tape, Transpore, cloth medical tape, Gaffers tape, electrical tape - Batteries - Bongo ties - Cough drops - Fingerless gloves - Extra Clif Bars - Headlamp - Extra Deoderant - Earplugs - Earbuds Listed above are the only things I bring as a default. Everything else is pretty much only brought at mixer's request. I do also have an ME-66 and a K-Tek KE-89CC, but those rarely come on set these days. Generally I get a wireless rig, so Comtek/IFB gets clipped on the belt. Same for the boom transmitter, or it goes on as a butt-plug. As far as clothes, I ALWAYS wear black. Sturdy jeans with lots of pockets. I bring warm jackets and scarf (the PNW can get pretty chilly). Insoles are the most amazing thing to have ever been created. You're a silly boom-op if you don't have them. Generally I just check the local military surplus store for set gear. And requesting pics right back at you. lol. Right now I'm using a generic military pouch (pic attached). I used to use this Belgian shoulder bag, but I switched it out for something with a lower profile. It was really great for storing gear in though. +1 to this. Listen to your mixer.
  9. Getting to know everybody and making a professional impression are easily two different things. I used this mic on a feature this past summer. 90% of the film was shot on the beach with lovely (loud) crashing waves. The rejection on this mic was AMAZING and made my job SO much easier. We ended up pulling it and switching to the 416 because we occasionally had some REALLY weird phase issues with it... My mixer mentioned it probably had something to do with the three capsules... not sure. Any insight?
  10. You mean like earbuds? I've experimented with using these occasionally, and I still haven't made up my mind on whether or not I like them. Any thoughts on this?
  11. That's some crazy aliasing. Or is that intentional?
  12. Why not make it dual system? It can't take that long to sync up the audio. Or just get the camera to feed into somewhere else that the sound is going too. Kind of like an external webcam, then the computer just syncs up the A/V. Also, if you really want to make sure their REACTIONS are miked, why not have them wear headsets? It doesn't matter if they're seen, plus it could totally add to the environment of a naval bridge. If you present him with a full solution and make it more of a sales pitch, I feel like someone from the business world might appreciate that and be more open to it. It'll help him out in the long run, and he could charge more for the courses.
  13. I WANT THIS. +9001 internet points to you, my good sir.
  14. So there are TONS of books on there... All of which are ~$30+ I'm assuming for the annual handbook, it should be this one: http://www.arrl.org/shop/2014--Handbook-Softcover-Centennial-Edition/ But there are like 10 different ones on antennas. Is there a preferred one? Lol I can't afford them all. Also, I'm not in ham radio at all. Not sure if that changes anything.
  15. Have one of the walls on hinges so you can store cables, headphones, tape, etc. Also, make sure it's clearly marked as belonging to the sound department. Otherwise you'll probably find it underneath an AC. I'd also say lose the wheels and just bore more handles. Cuz carrying things is awesome. Sand down the edges and put the skateboard grip tape on all the edges to reduce chipping/splintering. Around the holes for the boom poles, line it with something like plastic. That way, every time you store the pole, it won't be wearing away at the wood, compromising your glue job, or damaging the pole. Basically just make it easier to slide in (gigiddy). What are the dimensions you used?
  16. YES! Awesome! Thank you! Haha, well my dad is a robotics programmer and machinist, and my brother is a mechanical engineer. Growing up in a household like that, you get to have a pretty good understanding of mathematics and physics. I actually almost got into that myself, until I started working in film. So, yes, the more technical, the better. Once again, thank you for the useful post.
  17. Why not? I'd love to hear your opinion on this. I had gotten used to it back in the working-for-tuna-subs days where I had a 2-channel handheld recorder. I don't really use it anymore because the gear I've used doesn't give me the option. I just thought it could be useful to have the option.
  18. Yes, the fundamentals remain constant. But I would assume that the application of said fundamentals must vary in SOME way depending on the changing frequency assignments, different regulations, new technology, etc. I'm just asking if there's any piece of reading that I can get at that might enlighten me, as well as others who want to study up and stay educated.
  19. What's the status on this endeavor?? I want more! I'm hungry for wireless knowledge. Not sure if this can be fit into this thread as well, or if someone can redirect me to another thread that's more appropriate... but I was wondering if there is a more updated version of Lectrosonic's wireless guide (the last one was from like 2000). Or anything similar to it. Wireless keeps changing, especially lately. So anything accurate to the past several months maybe? Might be a good addendum to the wiki.
  20. http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/3MSWC/Skin-Wound-Care/ProductDirectory/MedicalTapes/ I'm finding bits of useful knowledge from this link...
  21. As far as with tapes, Transpore all the way. I try to stick with medical tapes because they're designed to adhere to skin. However, the lav cables do get pretty grody, so I keep a pack of alcohol swabs in my AKS bag. Every couple of days, wipe them down, good as new. In a T. Holman book, I saw a picture of a bandaid being used to stick the lav. I've never tried it, nor have I ever seen anyone else do this in person. Any insight on this?
