  1. That's an issue if the phone isn't waterproof. I use the screw in waterproof connector on my LifeProof case. The phone remains sealed. The one theory I heard is that the jack takes up enough internal space that they can't tuck it under the screen, and they want to remove the "chin" bezel on the bottom..... pushing the screen towards the edges. Supposedly we will eventually see a removal of the dedicated mechanical home button. There's a rumor that the iPhone 7 will have a home button that doesn't actually move, like the watch face, but will be a circle. That may become a "virtual" home button in the future. We'll see, but I like the analog minijack for compatibility uses. A lightning dongle is just something else to loose, and probably not super cheap since it has to convert digital audio to analog. Even if lightning headphones could have some sort of smarts in them, since they use a data connection. Maybe noise cancelling (using the iPhone's processor to do the work), maybe a better mic so Siri can understand you better.
  2. I'm not psyched about this rumor. I use a LifeProof case, which definitely muffles the mic and speaker. When I'm really having a phone conversation, I use a set of phone headphones. Right now those are pretty cheap to keep a few sets around. Lightning ones won't be. Also, LifeProof makes a screw in headphone adapter, so the phone is still waterproof while listening to music.
  3. Same here. My TRLA2.5 transmitters have been getting range equal to a SMQV since I got them in 2014. Whips versus whips. City (even NYC), desert, jungle, whatever. The "real world tests" of ZHD that I was there for were freaking impressive. One was with Rado at a location he shoots at all the time. The other was outside Gotham Sound in NY. Very very impressive
  4. Jack had his normal bag rig with SNA600A antennas connected directly to the QRX200 (no mic plexer). Standing on sidewalk in front of Gotham Sound. Max Futterman walked down the street and made it over 1,000 feet iirc. I know he made it past Steinway. The second test was him walking around the corner and basically the signal had to go through Gotham's building. The building is an early 1900s 2 story steel rebar reenforced concrete factory building (that's full of RF transmitting stuff). My Dad's machine shop was in a similar building, so I know how they're built. Those floors can hold 10,000 pound milling machines and lathes with no issues. He made it about halfway up that block before there were hits. The distance is really impressive, and when you combine it with the backup safety of the internal card recording, there are some amazing things that will happen for doc/reality. Thinking back, this could have changed the way I did a few things. Also, for cart work I think we'll see a lot more flexibility of "I'll make Camp Sound here". Same deal when getting the cart inside is tight and you'd rather be on the street, which I often try to do. All of this is not to overshadow the narrowband footprint of ZHD. That's pretty significant too. Especially if you're concerned about what's going to happen when we lose 600-698MHz.

  6. Most of B1 will be usable. C1 won't (in the USA), but it hasn't shipped yet. Anyone buying wireless gear today should already be aware that they will have some decisions to make in a few years.
  7. As the person that was wearing the packs, I was blown away with ZHD. Rado wired me the same way he wires people on his show. We tried to make it as "real world" as possible. It got to the point where somebody joked "I would never need this kind of range unless we were doing surveillance work". I've had a few shows in the past where this range would have been a game changer. The internal recording is a great feature, but the range is amazing for live monitoring of unscripted work. For example I did a series for Nat Geo where I wired an officer doing surveillance. We set up a tripod inside our van with a super long lens. Having the ability to hear live what he was seeing, and knowing when to try to get a visual on the suspects, would have been great.
  8. waterproof? built like a tank? I wish they were waterproof. Otherwise, they're very durable. One of mine has seen some pounding (motorcycle accident etc) and is still 100% functional. Just a scratch on the case.
  9. Actually, Teradek receiver was on the first monitor, which was cabled (via the loop through port) to a second monitor and I put my transmitter on the loop through output of that second monitor. Never experienced any interference.
  10. Thats awesome John. How did you link the transmitter to the Decimator2? I see the boscam has a 3 pin tail for power and a 3 pin for video? Have you any pictures? Thank you. I can take a picture. It's documented in the box which leg is what. I got a little electronics project box that I intend to mount the transmitter in. I'm mostly worried that the wires could be ripped out of the connector, so I'll wire to more robust connectors. Also, I suggest getting a spare antenna set. They're super cheap, but one of mine broke (transmitter) on set when somebody was moving the monitor.
  11. Their wireless video transmitter was on the camera, and mine was on the back of a monitor at video village. I did have a Zaxcom ERX box (2.4GHz) on the camera and it played fine with the Teradeck. Everything was great!
  12. I've used my trusty old Decimator2 at video village to feed a SD quadcopter/drone transmitter, and put the receiver on my cart. Really inexpensive, and surprisingly reliable. I got it off Amazon. I need to make a more robust box for it. It's pretty much a circuit board with some plastic wrap. I think it's intended for racing drones. They use standard definition video because the lag could cause them to crash, and they want it to be super lightweight. The SD was adequate. Not coax cable quality, but the lack of dealing with cables was great. This is what I have.   15. I have the same 128 GB cards for my Nomad that Jose is using. I am pretty sure I tried one in my fusion before I sold it, but I can't confirm that 100%. Sorry. I can say that the two I have work perfectly in the nomad.
  16. It depends on the show. Smaller crews, I'm happy to be in the loop.... Assuming it's not constant chatter. Often the bigger crews will put camera/sound on a different channel. Especially on shows where each sound bag is feeding 2 cameras, it can be helpful for the 3 of us to communicate about what's happening. I can hear (or see their RF levels) if a cast member is coming back towards the view of the cameras, and tip them off to catch the entrance. We can talk if a battery needs to be changed (camera's or a cast member). I never want one on scripted work where I'm at a cart. I would never listen while mixing. There are people that can relay info.
  17. They were playing with one in our PO today and had the little mic plugged into the front. I haven't looked up the specs on the mic Minijack yet, but I think we would only be using it for b roll anyway.
  18. It's a 3 pin Lemo (same as Zaxcom, and maybe some Sennheiser units?) so those mics are regular stock for sound shops. The TA connector is too large for the SSM. Heck, it seems to *just* fit inside the SM cases. Similar with the AA battery, it's just too big. Sure, the unusual battery isn't the easiest, so if you need to be able to buy batteries at the supermarket, the SMV is still really darn small. I think you really need to see and hold a SSM in person to appreciate what Lectrosonics pulled off. The only other transmitter that small that I know of (made by Q5X) doesn't have a removable battery, so the whole unit goes down for charging.
  19. I sometimes do. Keeps me in the loop, but I'll turn it down/off if it's too crazy chatty. I use on of these earpieces that doesn't block your ear. Some people chop a surveillance and wire the earpiece to the mixer's camera return.
