  1. He did in fact visit, and gleaned all he needed to about our humble corner of the internet: "+Jan McLaughlin take that forum with a grain of salt. NOT ONE comment was actually about the sound, everything is just about a few screen grabs and one sentence with no context." Mr. Hess' has a seemingly depthless well of ignorance to draw from. Or at least a plastic bag's worth.
  2. Day drinking will definitely be the perfect way to mentally prepare for the final (first?) snowstorm of the season
  3. If you're extremely desperate you could also use the headphone out? You can just split it and monitor off of that or whatever else is available.
  4. Does anyone know if the concealer and the metal clips come separately? I ordered a concealer from one of the usual suspects and all I got was the plastic disc. No circular topstick either (which I've heard comes with it).
  5. That's popped into my head a few times, but I bought the SM wired versions so that shouldn't be an issue, unless Sanken screwed up with all three.
  6. Am I the only person who has the opposite problem? With my black and red dot cos-11s I find I usually have the gain somewhere from 25-30 on my SMs. If it's a sit down interview it's usually above 30. Maybe we should trade.
  7. I got some of those 2400 mah amazon batteries and they had identical performance to eneloop pros in both SMQVs and an LT transmitter. They are substantially cheaper, though I can't speak to their lifespan yet.
  8. There's an explanation in the data sheet for the venue 2.
  9. That's what I figured, but then there's the moment where the front desk at the hotel calls his room to ask about the room service he got, and at the end of the call unplugs it because anyone can listen in at any time over the VoIP phones.
  10. There's actually multiple times when cos-11s are clearly visible on greenwald and the irish guy, as well as a lav cable coiled up and going into one of snowden's front pockets, which leads me to believe they were using wireless for everyone. Since the film maker was OMB-ing it she wouldn't have been able to operate both a camera and a sound kit and a boom (I'm referring to the hotel scenes only).
  11. I finally saw this the other day, and I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of wireless they were using? It occurred to me later that if they were any wireless except for zaxcom, they were pretty much broadcasting everything they said for anyone to pick up and hear. Even then zaxcom encryption is nowhere near what they would need to keep the wireless safe from prying ears (i'm assuming the agencies attempting to listen in wouldn't be slowed down at all by a 6 digit encryption key). Given all the lengths they go to throughout the film to protect themselves, is anyone aware of how they handled the recording of audio during shooting? I probably would have gone with a zaxcom recording transmitter myself (and it's very possible that's what they wound up doing).
  12. Was on the orca, just switched to the ktek and so far I'm really happy with it.
  13. The main thing I'm concerned about is the fact that the rigid spine can't shorten (nor should it), as I have a short torso. For reference, on my orca harness (which I don't like at all) I have the waist strap and the strap that connects the waist to the upper back tightened almost all the way, and my or30 is still riding extremely low. Obviously I could tighten the shoulder straps to raise it up but that defeats the purpose of having a waist strap entirely. So what I foresee happening is having the shoulder straps on the ktek harness slammed all the way down with the spine poking me in the back of the head.
  14. Anyone been using this thing in the field yet? I'd love to hear how it performs.
  15. I was referring to the initial post. You definitely offered excellent advice.
  16. Yeah I know I was just being willfully ignorant/obtuse about that.
  17. One can do many things, not all of them are good ideas, or make sense, or are practical. Sometimes the purpose of said things can be difficult to ascertain at first, hence asking. Like why spend $4500 to replace a $30 cable? I figured there had to be a really, really good reason. Thanks for actually answering the question, Jose! I just wasn't sure if there was some reason I couldn't think of to justify the expense.
  18. What's the reason/advantage for putting the transmitter at the base of a cabled pole? It seems to me that the whole point of going wireless is to remove the need for a cabled boom, both in terms of a cable throughout the pole and a cable running to a second location. I'm assuming it's a weight thing, I can't imagine wanting to have a transmitter 13-20 feet away from me on a pole, but I also can't see the advantage of cost/weight with the transmitter at the base of the pole when a cable could easily go to my bag/hip/whatever. Yeah, I know, for some boom ops wireless is a great way to go, and they'll get their monitor feed from the mixer. I'm simply asking for the advantage when used as a replacement for what would be a very short (and inexpensive, and practically fault free) cable run (this includes a static boom for sit downs and stuff).
  19. I knew someone was going to give me crap for saying arms.
  20. Hooray! Now if only we could get the iphone app I'd be a truly happy squid. Or octopus. Idk this thing only has four arms. Looks like a squid to me.
  21. Does anyone have a link to the files from the shootout? I seem to remember someone posting them (maybe it was the facebook freelance group) but can't find them now.
  22. I'm looking to get a cos-11 for my LT transmitter and I was wondering if anyone knew if the SM wiring would work fine with the LT. I have some SM series transmitters and I'd obviously like to be able to use the mic on any of my packs.
  23. Currently running a quick test against a 633, both units were toggling between 0 and 1 frame of difference to the 633 at 6 hours in, at 12 hours that hasn't changed. I'll keep it running a full 24 for fun.
