  1. Exactly. For the sake of standardization, when Jacques told me he had selected the Inspired Energy ND2054 for his future RX4+, I immediatly decided to abandon the Aaton proprietary batteries and chargers for these SMB monitored devices. (see below explanations to Paul Trautman) traut, on 31 Aug 2013 - 12:47 AM, said: Hello JP! Thank you for Cantar. Please don't change the battery arrangement on X3. Merci! Paul Trautman Cantar #217 & 496 Paul, all new audio recorders are now equipped with SSDs, no longer with shock sensitive HDDs, there is no more raison d'etre for elastically suspended batteries working as protective bumpers, they can be nested at the bottom of the machine like in all other audio recorders. Metal protected Aaton camera batteries may be abandonned in favor of the cheaper, lighter, IATA certified, SMBus equipped batteries made by 'Inspired Energy', me think, the NP1 terminator.. -- jean-pierre beauviala jp@aatium.com

Paul, all new audio recorders are now equipped with SSDs, no longer with shock sensitive HDDs, there is no more raison d'etre for elastically suspended batteries working as protective bumpers, they can be nested back at the bottom of the machine like in all other recorders. 3. yes, Haskell and me playing with the second generation of the Aaton35 designed for Jean-Luc Goadard, that was at L'Aqula international film festival, first week of November 1983. I would be so happy if you could send me a hidef scan of this photo ! BTW, Richard's pict was taken May 1970, rue Gaillon, Paris, while demonstrating my direct to film audio recording system in an Eclair NPR 16mm camera. This probably is the very first digital sound ever recorded on location in a battery operated machine, (33 years before the Cantar..) Jean-Philippe Carson, a friend of your father and importer of Eclair cameras in the states (the 35mm Cameflex dear to Haskell) asked me to find a way to make the 16mm NPR able to record sound in its instant mags, the only way to introduce the camera into the news gathering 'single system' domain held by Auricon and Cinema Products. -- jean-pierre beauviala jp at aatium.com
  4. 'Half size NP-1' ? Weigth and power consideration in mind, two half size batteries on an audio recorder should be the norm. Not only (à la Cantar-X) this brings the peace of mind a twin battery supply offers, but at about the same weight* it solves the 98Wh power limitation set by the IATA. Explanation: in a couple of years, the current 49Wh half size batteries will deliver up to 70Wh each, i.e. 140Wh on a two battery recorder, whereas a single battery of the same volume will still be restricted to 98Wh. full size: http://inspiredenergy.com/Standard_Products/NH2054/NH2054.htm NH2054 HD34 14.4V, 6.8Ah, 98Wh Weight: 434g / 15.3oz Length: 153mm / 6.0" half size http://inspiredenergy.com/Standard_Products/ND2054/ND2054.htm ND2054 HD34 14.4V, 3.4Ah , 49Wh Weight: 234g / 8.3oz Length: 87mm / 3.4" "Inspired" batteries should become the NP-1 successors : same form factor, stronger housing, self cleaning protected connectors, light, charge monitoring conform to the SMBus specs. Furthermore the 'openess' of the manufacturer is unique. Click on the "Engineering Data Sheet", you will be amazed ! Where can you find such thorough explanations and diagrams in any battery manufacturer leaflet? One flaw (easy to correct) : the two part charger is not built for on location survival. jpb * 2 x ND2054 = 468g/16.6oz versus 1 x NH2054 = 434g/15.3oz
  5. Jeff, Well I'm very glad to be a member of your forum, and learned a lot reading your very interesting "Why Dante" thread. Like you, I am convinced that "Dante will find a place in many of the setups we will encounter in the future". It will even be a must in the next generation of portable recorders. --jp PS for Simon. It's my turn: come to the Alps and I'll grill you some tasty lamb cotelettes.
