  1. i would just do it the old way: record a clap for a few seconds on both devices that you want to check for timecode synch, leave them running for a few hours, record a new clap every hour or so, import into your favourite TC capable editor, line up the files according to their time code and check the waveforms for sync. chris
  2. the Arricam LT is my favourite 35 camera in nearly all respects. *Very* quiet if in good shape and properly adjusted. if it makes lots of noise, have them readjust it. In very quiet interiors and small rooms you'll hear it, put on a barney and glass filter if it's a very delicate scene.
  3. yeah, i just thought a lot of people might want to power it with an external NP type lithium batt through the hirose input... then again, i guess a lot of those will have a regulated power distro.
  4. seem a bit odd that the spec list the external power as 9-16V when a lot of lithium have a 16.6V max peak. i guess they have enough safety margin to handle this but i'd still prefer if the official specs covered that. on the other hand they have a real nice listing on how long different kind of batteries last under different track counts, sample rates etc.: https://www.zoom.co.jp/products/handy-recorder/zoom-f8-multitrack-field-recorder#specs i also like that it looks like you can customise the meter display on screen.
  5. one of those? http://www.audiodept.com/index.php?route=product/product&manufacturer_id=48&product_id=440&sort=p.model&order=DESC&limit=100 http://www.audiodept.com/index.php?route=product/product&manufacturer_id=48&product_id=441&sort=p.model&order=DESC&limit=100 (probably worth making a new topic about rain covers ; ) chris
  6. bought a pair of Rode NT5 for 300EUR two years back, got plenty of good use of them and still have them as backup despite having much better mics now. and if i don't need them anymore, i can sell them on ebay for 200EUR. what's to regret?
  7. well, the above totally makes sense to me.... if sound is converted linearly by an ADC and then mapped linearly to a file, the top 6db will have *a lot* more values (or resolution) in it then the bottom 6db. lets take an 8bit ACD and file as example, with a signal of 48db coming in: the top 6db of that file would have 7bit, or half (128) of the total available values (8bit = 256), while the bottom 6db would only have 1bit, or 2 values. now if the file would be log encoded then this would change, but since i believe all common ADC circuits operate on a linear level that only would help if you had an ADC with very very high bit depth (and virtually no noise). at least that's the way it is with digital image sensors, so it seems reasonable for digital sound too (unless somebody invented a logarithmic microphone : ) chris
  8. rode makes an XLR adapter fro their lava which is kinda cheap... never compared the sound quality to an eumel but for cheap experiments it seems like a good start to me. chris
  9. true, but then again if the dual preamp implementation works well it won't need good limiters and even have an advantage over traditional recorders there. this of course won't help too much with mixing as pin drop said, but for jobs which mainly need clean ISOs it looks like a superb machine. chris
  10. considering that they are still trying to raise money and neither panasonic nor tesla nor google has already bought them, it's pretty save to assume that it's mostly bunk
  11. did you switch them on? : ) (seriously, i had this first time i connected them) chris ps: should also add that one third party usb cable i had did not connect properly. theirs worked fine though.
  12. i find the 416 has rather low self noise. chris
  13. jup same here - it's pretty much the 633 made 6cm shorter, and a tiny bit thinner and lighter. i wonder how comfortable it is to use the trims being that small (then again the trims on the 633 are not terribly comfy either, and on a chart you could use a tablet to control them). i'm most curious about the preamp quality, again on paper it seems to be comparable to a 633 (as is dynamic range). love the idea of having a backup recording per track at lower level if only 4 inputs are used (i guess they use the spare preamps of channel 5-8 for that?). would be a lovely feature for documentaries if it's a true dual preamp. on the zoom page they list: anybody know typical figures for crosstalk in other recorders? chris
  14. actually you should get scratch audio from one channel since the tentacle has a built-in mic, so for playback you could wire up a mono-3.5mm to stereo-3.5mm cable that mutes the timecode track. plus, for better quality scratch audio and plural eyes backup workflow in case the audio TC gets messed up for some reason i plan to use a splitter cable on the input and feed one channel with a wireless hop from the mixer. chris
  15. looks good, i might try the same with a right angle mini-jack cable.. something like this looks like it could be snugly attached with a low profile: http://www.amazon.de/iProtect-Ersatzkabel-Klinkenstecker-Anschluss-Verbindungskabel/dp/B00JKCWOC6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1434617570&sr=8-2&keywords=dr+dre+klinke http://www.amazon.de/Beats-Dr-Dre-Aux-Kabel/dp/B00FJRP91Y/ref=pd_sim_147_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1F5T8YHQWZN0RJDBAGSA http://www.amazon.de/Aukru-Kopfhörer-Kabelführung-Monster-Studio-Solo/dp/B00JGFQTRI/ref=pd_sim_147_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1F5T8YHQWZN0RJDBAGSA chris
  16. stopped the 633 test after 48h. result after several battery changes on the 633 and usb charging of the tentacle: one unit showed a 1 frame difference in the 633 jam menu and the other 1.5 (flickering between 1 and 2)
  17. pretty much so, but not recording anything. i switched it off twice for a minute when changing batteries though. if i recall correctly it should hold TC for two hours when switched off (blinking blue light on). i'll run some tests on that too when i'm doing some real world test (i.e. with recorded audio and video on 2-3 units). chris (38hours in and recharging the second tentacle, still 1 frame on both units)
  18. 35hours running, one of the units started to give the red battery warning (the other i had charging on usb during part of the test). still 1 frame difference on both tentacles vs the 633.
  19. well, the lockits have more features and have a proven track record, but personally i prefer the tentacle over all the other options simply because of size (and price). 32hours in my test, both unit show 1 frame drift vs the 633 (or they show no drift and the 633 drifted 1 frame ; ) battery is still holding up as well. chris
  20. 24 hours in, the two tentacles are still going strong with the same half frame drift (flickering between 0-1) vs the 633. will leave them running overnight and then start a second test tomorrow.
  21. had the same thought (although i haven't tested the onboard mic properly yet). actually the best of both worlds would be an input jack that senses if a external cable is plugged in and switches between internal mic and external audio. then again i guess it becomes a space and cost issue to have another input connector, and the idea of using a splitter cable should work nearly as well. now if i could only find a really small and solid right angle mini-jack connector (i find the neutrik one a bit on the large side for something like this).. speaking of cables: their mini-jack to lemo cable is well built (uses a neutrik mini-jack).
  22. agreed. my units arrived friday. wanted to test them against my 633 but they always shut off after two hours. so i asked the tentacle guys what i'm doing wrong and got an email within a few hours (on a sunday) got a reply where they explained to me that that's a power acing feature where the units power off after 2 hours if there's no mini-jack connected. clever idea so you don't end up with an empty unit by accident. 12hours in i get 0.5 frames drift vs the 633 (flickering between 0 and 1). since both units do this i suspect that they are accurate between themselves and the 633 is half a frame off, so might consider keeping one unit always on the 633 (this test comes next : ) chris
  23. they are 24EUR over here in germany : ( curious to hear the results!
  24. seems like the original link had a few "amp;" escape characters sneaked in... if you remove those you'll end up with exactly the same link as you've found, ie: http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=115&cp_id=11502&cs_id=1150201&p_id=600700&seq=1&format=2
  25. has anybody ever tried hooking a portable headphone amp to a G3 receiver? i had a FiiO E11K for a while but never thought of using it for that purpose. obviously not the best choice on properly budgeted films and a bit clumsy (there are cheaper ones that are more compact too) but might be an idea to get by until you get there. chris
