  1. We did a recent tonebenders ep with Gordon Hempton where he discussed his binaural ambient recording technique some.

Generally you can only use it for ambient fx, since the binaural mics capture 360 degrees.  The effect is not too far from spaced pair omnis IMO.

With that said, you can use bianural recordings on ambient recordings due for speaker playback.  Gordon won an emmy for his work in the PBS documentary Vanishing Dawn Chorus using this technique.

There's a film about Gordon Hempton called The Soundtracker about his philosophy, recordings and recording techniques. I just finished watching it. He's arguably a little eccentric (he'd probably agree), but watching the film was time well spent. One of the interesting segments of the film involves his pursuit of an audio portrait involving a passing train and a meadowlark.

The film can be purchased/downloaded for $10: http://www.soundtrackerthemovie.com/ST/Home.html

Hempton has a web site that hosts his sound libraries - https://quietplanet.com.

He has also written a book called One Square Inch of Silence: http://www.amazon.com/Square-Inch-Silence-Gordon-Hempton-ebook/dp/B001VFTZ22/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394147833&sr=8-1&keywords=hempton+One+Square+Inch+of+Silence

In addition, he's done a TEDx talk:

  2. I think a interactive real time video discussion is much more appropriate. If people are interested maybe we should make that happen.

Then we can easily have pictures and audio comparisons and so on...

You mean something like a Google Hangout? I'd love to listen in on that discussion.
  3. the Cinela would have to be ordered from Paris>>

i think pro sound NY has them...

I was at Pro Sound last week. They show the whole Cinela line on their web site, but the products are actually all special order.

Gotham Sound has two Cinela Pianos in stock, but not the smaller mounts/windscreens.

  4. I've had an MK2 for many many years.  I treasure it for its wonderful sound, as you say, very uncolored, so natural.

I purchased a pair of MK2s because I think that they will be suitable for some recordings that I want to do (very influenced by the UK sound recordist Chris Watson), but did not anticipate how much fuller and more natural they sound, close miked to a human voice, than an MK 41. Which doesn't change the fact that in many circumstances, if not most, they are impractical for recording voice in the context of a film or video. But still, it's quite an eye opener.

  5. Last week, I purchased a pair of Scheops MK 2 omnidirectional microphones.

Compared to MK 41 hypercardiods, I am struck - "blown away" is pretty much the right phrase, as unscientific as it is - by the depth, breadth and presence of the sound that I'm getting from them when placed close to the sound source.

In the dark ages, before Lavalier omnis, were there times when these mics were hidden to record talent, and if so, in what circumstances and how?

And a question for those of you who are using them today. What are you using them for, apart from voice over? No doubt ambient and sound effects are on the list. Anything else?

  6. Inside you might be better off using this:

There is a thread here devoted to it, and some here consider it a brilliant product

Thanks Constantin. This is for outdoors in light wind for mono and stereo (A/B Spaced and ORTF) with MK 41 and MK 2 mics.

The specs for the B 5 D and W 5 D (both hollow foam) and W 20 R1 (basket with fur) are worth comparing.

As between the Cinela Leonard and Scheops W 20 R1, I think that I'd go with the Scheops. In addition to Jeff's comments, the Cinela would have to be ordered from Paris whereas the Scheops is readily available in New York via the distributor Redding Audio.

I don't have the B 5 D hollow foam, but I do have the somewhat larger W 5 D. I use it indoors and outdoors in light wind, although it doesn't take a lot of wind to affect it. The question now is what real added benefit I would get from the W 20 R1 basket and fur, and at what cost to the sound. I plan to discuss this with Gotham Sound and/or Redding. One thing I'm wondering is whether it would make sense to put the fur cover for the W 20 R basket over the W 5 D, assuming that it can be done (they are the same diameter). It would certainly be less expensive.

If anyone has additional comments, I'd be most appreciative.
