  1. Hello Hello Everybody, Some strange flr flr flr flr flr noise issue with one of my Lectros SMDa. When the Roll-off is on 35Hz it is quasi nothing to hear, i would say ok. But when i go up with the Filter, this Noise go up too. At 150Hz it sounds like a humide Schoeps. This is the same with different Mics, Receivers etc. new Batterys... I have two SMDa, only one have this problem. Somebody have an Idea, or same Experience ? I expected have to send it to Lectros or Ambient... Best Regard, Marc.
  2. Jeff Wexler posted a clear and informative reply to Prahlad Strickland's question about diversity reception. Read it here: I posted my question there, but as it was off-topic I've re-posted here so as not to derail the thread. Lectrosonics' SR manual reads: "...the two channels can be used together as a single receiver in "True Diversity" Ratio Mode for enhanced performance in some environments." My understanding is that in Ratio Mode, the dual receiver SR "favors" the audio signal from the receiver with the stronger signal from the transmitter. If Ratio Mode on the SR is a combination of antenna diversity and receiver diversity, how is it better than receiver diversity? If I use a pair of receiver antennas (matched or not) in fixed positions for each integrated receiver front end in an SR, both receiver sections will have (presumably) identical range and reception from the transmitter. How does Ratio Mode purport to give a more robust signal than plain ol' receiver diversity?
  3. Seeing if anyone has had this issue with the Lectrosonics UM400a BLK 26 in IFB mode. The issue encountered is, after about 10 min of good strong audio sending to multiple R1a units on set. The audio just fades away, comes back and then fade away. Here are all the things tried and observed to solve the issue. When I send it back to Lectrosonics how should I describe it? So I don't get a message back "We can't find anything wrong." because it looks and acts fine at first, but it seems to take a few minutes for it to happen. Thanks Observations: 1. Still solid green power light on UM400a 2. Green modulation on audio lights on UM400a 3. 3 other identical setup bag rigs with own IFB UM400a on other frequencies (swapped with others for testing) same result with bad unit 4. Sound Devices 664 x1 out put is used on all bags (swapped with others for testing) same result 5. Ta3 -Ta5 cables (swapped with others for testing) same result 6. Uses 9v eliminator (swapped with others for testing) same result 7. IFB is five frequency blocks away from nearest other Lectros on set and changed multiple times to clear channels and checked with other bags IFB to not be intermod. 8. Power cycle unit for 30 sec. fixes issue for about 10 minutes 9. Running just one bag or all bags with IFBs and same result with bad unit
  4. We have a lot of SRb units and they don't always ALL make it back to the mothership unless they have to. They always update the firmware when it goes back, but most of ours are still living on 1.2 or 1.3 and they've obviously changed a few things since then. We ended up getting a LectroLink adapter to do the updates ourselves and wanted to share our experience. Lectro has a couple guides, but you have to e-mail them and ask for them, as of 2.26.15 anyways.   5. FreqFinder version 1.8 for Android has been released and iOS version 2.3 is soon to follow. And what is new to both is worthy of a little bit of explanation. Settings which will affect the intermodulation calculation have been added. iPhone users had the 3x3 and 2x7 settings previously. The transmitter spacing and intermod spacing factors will be added soon. A summary of each of the settings: - Enable 7th Order Products This setting was enabled by default. Turning it off will provide you with more compatible channels at the cost of the quality of those channels. 7th Order Products tend to be much less severe and therefore users may wish to disable their calculation. - Enable 3 TX 3rd Order Products This setting was also enabled by default. Turning it off will provide you with more compatible channels at the cost of the quality of those channels. 3 TX 3rd Order products occur mainly when you have large groups of radios in tighter spaces. One might disable this if he were reasonably sure that the transmitters will be rather spread out. - Intermodulation Spacing Factor The default for this setting has always been at its least conservative. This is the padding between a transmitter and any intermodulation product. Increasing this value will result in fewer compatible channels. ***Note that the number itself is rather arbitrary. I do ask that you play with different settings and if you come to any interesting conclusions, I would very much like to hear them*** - Transmitter Spacing Factor This factor determines the minimum spacing between transmitters according to their bandwidth. The calculation averages two transmitters' bandwidths and then multiplies by this factor to determine the spacing. The default for this setting has always been at its least conservative, however a couple of transmitters have built in alternative minimum spacings (Lectrosonics has 300khz). This setting will override that minimum if it calculates a larger spacing. Even with maximum settings, a user will still get 10 channels out of a single Lectrosonics block. These controls are meant to provide extra protection and still allow a users with larger transmitter counts the ability to squeeze more channels in. I would recommend for most cart setups dialing the settings to maximum and keeping them there. I want to note that for these settings, you can not dial down the settings midway through adding transmitters and expect the first set of transmitters to stay protected at the higher settings. When you change the settings, all of the transmitters are protected at those settings. On that note, hopefully everyone has noticed the "Protection" switch on the transmitter details page. That is meant to add transmitters which would contribute to intermodulation but for which you do not care about the performance of the transmitters. In the future I'd like to have three protection options (NONE, DEFAULT, and EXTREME) that would allow for extra protection to selected transmitters. I hope everyone is finding FreqFinder suitable to their needs, and as always I love to hear from you guys. Best, James
  6. Hey guys, Just looking for some info on this. Im using 2 pairs of 211s and 200b. With 2 Sanken cos11 that came from the shop wired for lectro LMa. Im getting a weird noise like harmonics way back in there. Do i need to rewire for the 200b? Is the wiring different? I read something that made me think that. I bought the lectros used and had never used them, so i don't know if the noise is normal but i doubt it. I also have to keep the trim on the 200b very very low. Thoughts, Thanks in advance.

  9. Just bought a CMIT5U and am getting ready to use it in conjunction with a Denecke PS1a power supply and a UM400a transmitter. Is there a distinct wiring configuration I need to use for the boom cable itself? Redding Audio's site says: "Special care must be taken if the CMIT 5U is used with an external phantom power supply going unbalanced into a wireless bodypack transmitter - pin-3 must be decoupled from the powering and pin-1 must remain connected. (Keep pin-2 hot and pin-1 GND)." Am i mistaken, or does a phantom power supply not only supply power across Pins 1 and 2 anyway? What am I missing? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!
  10. Hey Guys! Need advice again! I got asked to do a 2-day reality gig that will be a pretty big setup. Here are the specs: Equipment: CAMERAS: Canon 5Ds Sony FS700s SOUND: SD 664 CL6 8x Lectro UCR411a 8x Lectro UM400 8x COS11 2x Senny G3s (backup wireless) Senny MKH60 4+ Røde Mics BDS & NP1s There are 2 main setups that I was concerned about: SETUP 1: 4 people in 4 different cars driving at undeterminable distances from eachother. 1-2 cameras in each car. Interviews being conducted in each car. QUESTION: Since I obviously cannot be in 4 places at once, and I don't know where the cars will be in relation to each other (I will be in one of the cars) I don't want to rely on the wireless for the primary sound. My solution: Røde mics on each 5D? I know they are not the best quality audio wise, but I don't see any way around it. SETUP 2: 4-8 people in a restaurant for a taste testing scenario. Multiple cameras. I will wire up everyone, but I also wanted to have a boom going for ambience. I won't be able to get it in the shot. ----- The production wanted all ISOs, which is fine, because I have 12 tracks to work with with the CL6. In standard reality (in all your guys experience), does post want a 2-mix primarily or ISOs? I am not the most experienced mixing on the fly, so I would prefer ISOs as well. Just wanted to know how the real people do it. This question may seem dumb, but hey, how do you keep track of 8 people simultaneously?! Keeping consitent levels without auto mix? Wires. To hide or not to hide? Not having to hide the lavs would speed up the production two-fold, and I wouldn't have to worry about clothing shenanigans. Do most reality productions care if the lav is hidden? Should I just ask if they care? Power. How long do you think I will be able to run my bag off of 1 IDX NP-L7S (14.8V/71Wh Lithium Ion)? I am powering 8 UCR411s and my SD 664. I will probably be rolling all day, and I have 4 batts to work with. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated! I have never worked with this many simultaneous tracks before so please let me know the best way to stay on top of everything. -Ryan
  11. Hey soundies, I recently had my apartment broken into in Astoria Queens. They stole my Canon 7D camera, and aKAI keyboard, and my entire 788 sound rig with lectrosonics, comteks, smart slate and everything else in the bag.... This was in astoria, queens New York.... If Anybody knows of any gear someone is selling for very cheap or seems shady please let me know... Cheers
  12. Having an issue with a new block 21 SRb. Once in a while it will randomly block out all frequencies (as in, if you scan, everything will be unavailable) and it sends a fairly intense feedback into the mixer, sounds almost like a fax machine. Only lasts for a few minutes then goes back to normal. Power cycling doesn't fix it. Currently on the road and it will be awhile until I can take it back. Any ideas welcome. Thanks
  13. I recall someone saying that the Sennheiser G3 transmitters are compatible with a different brand of wireless slot receivers. I can’t remember if it was the Lectrosonics SR series or some other brand when switched to compatibility mode. Can someone please tell me which receiver would work? thanks,

I will be posting an iOS version update very soon, with a number of new features: - Substantially faster calculation (for the supporting of more transmitters and for future customization options) - Disable transmitter feature - Custom TX Types, implemented via our brand new - Import / Export feature Here's the deal with Import and Export: for right now it is implemented only using the built in Mail app, so you need to be configured to use the built in Mail app. I looked into the Gmail app; it is not possible to use the gmail app to open an attached file inside of another app. Turns out, it's not very user friendly in general to get files into and out of apps. The only other built in option is Apple's app file sharing which requires you to use iTunes on a computer. I didn't think that was very user friendly. If nothing else, I'll probably incorporate Dropbox file sharing in there in the future. Also, the import feature is moderately smart. While you can simply add all of the imported transmitters to the current or new list, I imagine people will want to be synchronizing lists frequently. For that purpose, each transmitter is assigned a UUID. Transmitters therefore can be updated with new information with each import. Granted, it is not as sophisticated as perhaps a cloud sharing service, but that's a conversation for another time... I have created a new file format called ".ffx". It is an xml document. It can be opened with a text editor (on a computer) and is human readable. And you are free to edit these files to create custom transmitters and custom transmitter types with custom channel lists. The file format should be mostly self explanatory, and I've done my best to make these files pretty idiot proof, but I fully anticipate that with enough people tinkering, somethings will go wrong. And as usual, I am (relatively) immediately accessible to work through whatever problems you have, and I want all of your input to continue to make the app better. And as usual, the Android version is behind on the programming. A lot of work went into these new features, and it will take time to implement them in the Android version. However the priority is the Import / Export, and since we don't have to wait a week or more to update, I'll post the new features incrementally. Cheers, James

Features include: - Look up station data for your current location (determined by gps, cell, or wifi) or for any location in the US - Relate station data to any specific location for approximation of the interference caused by TV transmitters at that location - Relate station data to multiple locations simultaneously for a "worst case scenario" estimate - Station data for the selected areas stays on your device for offline use - Sort TV stations by name, channel, and estimated field strength - Filter TV stations by license status and by the channels affecting your current transmitter list (fully customizable filtering to be added in the future) - Station transmitter detail screen featuring a map view of the station's polar pattern - Estimated field strength calculation provided directly by the FCC - Location Profiles allow for multiple location configurations - Easy map search functionality allows fast finding of locations by address The add-on will be an in-app purchase costing $15. I am going to release it early (before it is available for purchase) and extend the preview time until the end of October to give everyone a chance to play. Soon after this update, the in-app purchase will be available, extending the functionality indefinitely. After October, the preview will expire and the add-on will have to be purchased in order to access any station data. I'm sorry to say that for the moment, the v2.0 will only be available for iPhone users. The Android preview will continue to be available until I make the complete add-on available to Android users. *Current FreqFinder users: the FCC has changed the format of their TV data. This update is required to properly receive FCC data. Currently, FCC data is only downloaded upon major location changes (>20 miles) and fresh installs. An update for Android is already on the app store. The iPhone update will be available as soon as Apple approves the update. Thank you for your patience.
  16. Hey guys I'm about to do a short shoot in Japan and was wondering if anyone out there has shot there and what lectro blocks are clear? I know Japan has a 10 mW power output limit but was hoping to still use my normal mics as its a short shoot and don't want the hassle of renting locally. Right now I am planning on using blocks 19 & 21 for my cast. Any thoughts on this? Also, anyone use comteks out there? Thanks a bunch -Danny McCullough, CAS

Ambient Insider's tips Recent requests from the USA and China showed that although frequently used in Europe some of our products and small workflow helpers are rather unknown to the majority of our community. Thus we would like to take the opportunity and introduce you to our "insider's tips" which have been on the market already for quite some time. VSLOT As prosumer as well as digital cinema cameras nowadays offer at least broadcast compatible video quality they mostly cut back professional audio features and inputs. With the VSLOT you can add a professional stereo slot-in receiver (of course also mono) to all cameras or rigs with a V-Mount battery. This way professional slot-in receiver from Lectrosonics, Sony, Audio Limited, Sennheiser, etc. can now be used on smaller HD cams or cinema cams, delivering an adequate audio to the good video quality. The receiver uses the power from the V-Mount battery and of course loops it through to the camera. The cables are available in different lengths to provide a slim camera rig without dangling cables while our included 20cm stereo cable works for most setups. It powers the receiver through the standard Unislot 25-pin DSUB connector... ...and delivers up to two channels on a 5-pin TA connector UMP II and QWB wireless boom solution The Quickpole Wireless Boom (QWB) is a handmade extension made out of carbon fiber and aluminum to attach a body pack wireless and our UMPII power supply to a boom tip. Of course it doesn’t matter whether it’s an Ambient pole or not as the stainless steel threads are standard 3/8”. It adds 25cm length to you boom with only 90g additional weight. The idea behind it is that plug-on transmitters often offer a worse range since they are using the Mic body as antenna. Now, of course the range you get from a plug-on is strongly depending how well your Mic body makes contact with the XLR or the plug-on. Thus sound mixers asked us a long time ago to develop something so they could use there rock solid belt packs also for their boom microphones. The UMP II, our latest generation, is lighter and smaller than our first box and can provide 48 and 12V Phantom as well as T-Power for older Mics. Dimensions (WHD): 57 x 92 x 18 mm Weight (unit only): 100 g It can power even the hungriest microphones, e.g. Schoeps CMIT for days from only two AA batteries. Of course one TA3f to XLR3 cable is included as well as a TA3f cable with one open end to solder your wireless connector to it. We took great care that our circuitry does not affect the audio at all. As our American customers prefer to use an internal cabled boom with a microphone power supply and a wireless transmitter on their belt we added a belt clip to the UMP II. In Europe sound mixers prefer to use the transmitter and Power source on their boom tip. Pros and Cons: The American way of course provides a lighter boom and easier access to the transmitter and Power distribution BUT Internal cable can rattle and the body pack on your belt has less range. The European way is a compact sized setup you also can use on a stand increases your boom lengths and offers the best wireless range. while of course the boom gets heavier.   18. Hi I'm looking to upgrade my radio system and Im favoured towards 2 Lectroconices systems. Most of my work is documentary and reality based shows with a basic bag kit of 2 to 3 wireless radio mics. I'd appreciate advice and opinions from current Lectrosonics users, it's a big investment after all!! Im guessing the advantage of the SMQV is the longer battery life over the SMV. But it seems to me this is really only an advantage when using the higher power outputs. Is longer battery life a better option than smaller size? Then... are the LMa or UMa a better option than the SMV or the SMQV? And if so why? Now receivers? One SRb5P two channel receiver? or two UCR411a receivers?   19. Warning: I'm a newbie so pardon the stupid question. I really just want to tally what's the most popular combo out there. Please list what's your Transmitter/Receiver and your opinion of how it's working for you and why you like using that combo
  20. so I was requested by Rado to do a test of frequency scans on block 21 with my Nomad on and off, I did the same with block 24. Bloc 24 with Nomad powered off Block 24 with Nomad powered up Block 21 with Nomad powered off Block 21 with Nomad powered on nothing special done with this test. bag was sitting on my kitchen counter, Nomad switch off, turned on BDS and powered up receivers and did a scan. Then turned on Nomad and re-scanned. Looks to be some RF in block 21 after the power up. Not sure if Glenn has anything scientific for this. My SRa's are fairly close to the unit as you can tell from the photos and i could move them away by a good inch or so. But honestly, I haven't had any dropouts from general usage, even while being in NYC last week, which was quite the ugly scan.

  24. I'm an independent doc shooter, and will be shooting in a remote area for 3 months, on trails. I'll have to move fast with my subjects, so I'm looking to minimize the weight. I currently own a c100, two Lectro LMa TXs, with one 401 and one UCR100 RXs. Usually I use the Rycote plate and strap my 401 to the hotshoe of the C100 handle (pictured). But I'm looking for advise on 1. How to run two wireless units on this setup (mounting options?), while 2. keeping small weight. I love the 401 quality, so am considering purchasing a second, but wonder how I would deal with mounting or tethering to a waste belt that stashes two 401's next to my lenses. I then wonder if upgrading to Lectro SRb would let me capture two wireless channels from my LMa's, mount to the hotshoe, and feed to either one or both C100 input channels, would be an option? Thoughts or advise? Chris.
  25. After running across checked my Zaxcom antennae and found them to be a little off of the correct length for my block. So I want to ask, how important is antenna length? I have two QRX receivers and some TRX transmitters. They have all operated well-enough. During my measurements I found some to be 1/4" too long, which puts them 2 blocks away according to the Zaxcom antenna length chart. The current TRX and QRX manuals show the same chart. I used precise digital calipers for the measurement. I can't say I noticed any difference now compared to before. There are so many variables that affect reception, how do I know if the antenna length was a weak point? I'd like to hear from Glenn and Larry. Mark O.
