  1. Hi guys I've been always struggling with my cheap H1 recorder's noise floor when recording nature and low spl sources, lately I worked on a method that gave me pretty good results, and wanted to share it with you and see if someone already tried it, if not I'll be glad to get your feedback. -Search for the quietest bedroom you can find, with a large closet with a lot of cloths. -Start the Rec on your H1 at 75 gain and put the recorder between layers of cloths, (Record 30 seconds, beware of cloth rustle) -Import the audio files to your DAW. -Use RX Spectral Denoiser to learn from the noise sample. -Select the clips and apply the noise reduction profile, quality set to Best and artifact smoothing set to 5. -Play with the threshold and reduction until you get rid of the noise and not introduce any artifacts to the sound. I can Include samples and screenshots if you are interested in this method, as I said I'll love to know what you think and have a good day
  2. Shooting near a busy road? Lawn work or construction down the street? Surround the set with a temporary barrier made from this new material and you'll have a silent set even in the noisiest location. Ok, so back to reality. That is obviously an unrealistic fantasy, but new research has come up with a way to reduce 94% of sound transmission without impeding airflow. So maybe we won't be creating temporary silent zones, but a silent leaf blower may now be a real possibility! Once they can figure out how to adapt this to aviation, hold for plane may actually become a thing of the past! For now, I'll continue to be a hopeless optimist as the whole set watches me waiting for an all clear so we can get back to work. https://phys.org/news/2019-03-acoustic-metamaterial-cancels.html
  3. Hello, I have a 35 year old Dolby 372 unit that needs some servicing. I contacted Dolby and unfortunately they do not service their older instruments anymore. Everything on the left channel works but the right channel has a shrill thinning sound when playing back a 320 wBn test, encode in record with NR on has no problem, however, playback "NR off" produces a distorted,/scratching sound. I feel like I have exhausted my options besides constant cleaning etc. Do any of you leaders have any advice for troubleshooting or suggestions of whom I could contact to inspect/repair this unit. I am using a Nagra X4S at 15ips with Stellavox AMI48 mixer. As always, any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you MarkC
  4. Hey, Pretty expensive, but very impressive. Here's my review. http://tyfordaudiovideo.blogspot.com/2016/08/the-cedar-dns-2-portable-dialog-noise.html Regards, Ty Ford
  5. Hi all, I have landed a job mixing for a tv show and am a bit worried as they tell me there will be no or very little postproduction going into each episode (churning out 5 episodes a week so the editor will have a few days for turnaround) In my relatively limited experience there is always a fair bit of work that needs to be done on production audio, aside from eqing out hum etc. My question is to the seasoned mixers of jwsoundgroup is, in general on bigger Tv productions, how does sound post workflow go? My main concern is noise reduction, which i know is often treated with outboard/ hardware processors like cedar DNS 8 for live boradcast, but how do they deal with it on TV series =/ soaps etc? Production also want me to use radio mics most of the time and i was wondering if the seasoned pros ever have to deal with cloth russle and acoustic noise at all or can it be 100% mitigated? I will be mixing direct to cam for the most part, is there any tips or advice you guys could spare? Really appriciate any help on this.. j
