  1. It was suggested in the Nomad thread that there should be a separate Auto-Mix thread so Auto-Mix posts don't get lost in the massive Nomad thread. So I guess this should be the place to post Auto-Mix setting, thoughts and comments. Happy Mixing.
  2. I was doing a job today, a documentary, with a NOMAD 10. I've had it for about 6 months and haven't had an ounce of problems with it, love the thing. Today, after about an hour into an interview, during a 22 minute long take, audio cut out, and the NOMAD just froze like a crappy PC from the 90s or something. Wouldn't respond, wouldn't cut, had to shut it down. On restarting, luckily the file recovery program recovered the file successfully where it had cut out. Thank god for that system btw. Listened to the file and it seemed ok. Rolled again, thinking I was ok, then 30 seconds later, nomad makes high pitched tone and freezes again. Restart again, and again, recovers file. I quickly change the primary folder to a new primary folder and turn mirroring off because I had a weird feeling it had something to do with it. The rest of the interview went ok. Then, after the interview, remirrored the entire card just to be safe. While mirroring the problem sequence, the mirroring froze on 82 percent, yet the mixer didn't freeze. Crossed my fingers and tried remirroring one more time and luckily it was fine. And all the audio is there and there was no problem. Short of the takes cutting out when they did. What do you think happened? I've never run into anything like this before. Do you think it had something to do with my mirroring? I had it on, not on continuous. It was pretty hot out and we were doing long takes but i've never known the NOMAD to be temperamental to that sort of thing. It was hot but it wasn't like the desert. Do you think my nomad is messed up? Should I maybe factory reset just to be sure? Has anyone had this happen?
  3. So Maxx is currently well into beta testing and so far it is passing with flying colors. Just a few more software tweaks and they will start shipping. My impressions so far: I like that Maxx is very compact and light weight. The screen brightness when turned to 11 is quite bright - Zaxcom has somehow made the screen even brighter than in Nomad - and the removal of the plastic overlay cuts down on glare which adds to the visibility. The menu structure is very similar to Nomad so anybody who is familiar with Nomad can jump right in with no learning curve. I like the added dedicated PFL buttons. As for the down side - they are all software related annoyances which will be fixed prior to release.
  4. Hi, I have an AES breakout cable (terminating in XLR) for my Nomad and also the Remote Audio mixer cable for Nomad. I'm wondering if it's possible to successfully and reliably transmit an AES signal through the Remote Audio cable? It would be into a Sony XDCAM (don't have one handy for testing). I think I remember reading somewhere a good while ago that it's possible to run into problems running an AES signal through "regular" audio cables, so I wanted to check. Thanks!
  5. Hey all, Getting into timecode and worried about whether I'm totally #$@%i@ things up or not. Followed and what a few mixers have told me (and searching on JW a bit) have told me that I could jam from the recorder to the camera and that it should be fine. Without a lockit box. However, the Alexa manual is kind of brief and doesn't mention this particular activity of the timecode. What I want to know is what the blinking Alexa TC means. After I jam from the recorder it (it being the TC numbers/digits) stays solid for awhile, but then goes back to blinking again. This recent production with the Alexa also had a lockit box, and when I used it it would stay solid generally (although sometimes it would go back to blinking unless I babysat the camera a bit to always make sure it stays solid). The AC was indicating to me the TC staying solid is a good thing. But is he right? Anyways, thanks for the help.
  6. So I thought I should share my experience with my newly configured Zaxcom bag and how it has been performing. I took a little inspiration from Brian's "Blue Lagoon" story and also from Rado's recent article in Sound & Picture. While I was in preproduction for a show that I would be working on, I was informed that there were going to be scenes where GoPro's were going to be mounted to off-road racing cars and that they would be driving very far off into the desert, far out of the range of any wireless bag reception. In the past, they said they have simply boomed bits and pieces of the two-way radio but that it never sounded great and that it never really captured the moment of thrills because a driver can't drive and operate the radio at the same time. In this case I brought up the ability of Zaxcom wireless to record with timecode sync so it really didn't matter if the Tx's went out of range. Every time I bring this up to camera operators and producers that I'm working with for the first time, they are blown away by this. They agreed that this was definitely the way to go and were excited that it was a new way they could easily get audio regardless of where the cars drove, and capture the passion of the moment. My bag currently consists of a Nomad 12, 2 QRX's, MicPlexer, 2 TRX900LA's, and 2 TRX900LANC's. I had two Lectro SNA's feeding MicPlexer up on my harness like Rado had in the Sound & Picture article; thanks again Rado!
  7. Taking my Zaxcom bag to its next level of usefulness. Writing this post will hopefully help me think it through more thoroughly. What I want to ultimately do is this: Remote RX-in-a-bag: Mix from main cart to Nomad Track 1 via cat 5 Up to six Iso sends back to cart via cat5's Nomad time code jammed to main recorder for DIT time code via Deneke slate (1/4" --> BNCF cable ordered) TRX's IFB voting may have to be turned on to resolve IFB100 and Nomad IFB signal conflicts as TRX's move between main cart and remote set. Test forthcoming. Bag recorder: Mix to Track 1 Up to six isos thereafter Nomad jammed from Deneke slate to match main cart time code SNA antennas stand by if needed, otherwise, 1/4 waves Think it's time for a small cart upon which to rest the bag and safely hold an external LiFe Pelican battery. Could use my chair and our apple box...but...have ordered this with the plan to add a top bag-shelf and antenna mast: Questions & thoughts: What advantage/disadvantage to leaving IFB voting 'on' on TRX if only one IFB source exists? When IFB voting is 'on' my guess is the main cart IFB should be 2.473 and Nomad IFB should be 2.475. That's where I plan to begin anyway. Seems like it's working. I think I've got to have QRX's IFB turned off and rely on Nomad's Zaxnet controls. Try to imagine alternative setups that might use QRX IFB along with Nomad, but yet cannot, and nothing jumps out at me for this job. Whether to go AES from QRX's to Nomad. Figured I could do it with the construction of a beefier DE-15 cable (all four pairs in and out), but why? Are the AES up sides yet worth it given I've no mixer able to receive AES at the main cart? When that happens, I'm likely to make the jump to AES since it takes variables out of the signal chain = less to think about. Current TRX version 7.30M I'm told must go back to factory for updating software. Should I make the trip? Dunno... Stuff to do: Special USBM --> USBM cables to link the 3 QRX units were ordered spec'ed today. Will report back. Practice TRX742 stereo cone deployment Practice switching between bag and remote RX rig settings Back up settings to CF card Build bag cart Add 3rd QRX Test Neverclip on Neverclip-enabled TRX units Range test the bag All for now, but for sure, more later as things develop. TRX900 and all TRX's at V. 7.30M Nomad V 4.45 QRX100 Stereo V. 1.46
  8. So I recently received my Nomad and based on the recommendations of a few people on this forum, decided to go with the Hawkwoods DVSQN4S to power my bag. I tested it out on a shoot over the weekend and I am not getting the run time I was expecting and worse, I lost power during a take twice at a voltage on the battery meter that I shouldn't have. I will readily admit that I am very green when it comes to battery chemistry and power distribution so, I don't know if I'm missing something obvious, but this is my understanding so far of my setup: The Sony batteries I'm using are 7.2V and 7800mAh so I should be getting 14.4V Nomad operates between 10 -18VDC Hawkwoods DVSQN4S has 12V regulated output Nomad displayed around 16.4V with fresh batts and would kick off around 14V on the meter. I was only powering the Nomad. Any ideas what is happening? -Bradley
  9. Hi everyone, I have decided to get a new mixer/recorder (having previously worked with an SD442 going direct into a REDONE with tons of heavy XLR cables - but now I am looking for a double – system along with an Epic) and after doing a lot of reading here I am leaning heavily towards a full Zaxcom – system; hoping for great RF - noise - free sound in post, and no hassle with timecode – issues. I was thinking of getting a Maxx, or a Nomad, along with two TRX900LA’s, one QRX100Q, and one ERX2TCD sitting on the camera feeding scratch – audio and TC, and perhaps one ERX2TCD for the directors ear. My needs are perhaps slightly different than many other on this forum. I rarely need more than 4 ISO’s. I film two or three actors talking together, lavaliere’d up, with one boom – track, which I preferably use, when I can. But wireless abilities are also very important in situations of running around in a more spontaneous fashion, or in doing documentary work. So in a way, maybe the choice to get a Maxx is obvious. Budget is an issue, and the price - difference between a Nomad 10 and a Maxx with equal possibilities of feeding a scratch – track/TC is a about a 1000 dollars more for the Nomad 10 (with the Nomads Zaxnet, and with the Maxx I’d get the IFB – option on the QRX100). The advantage of the Nomad is giving me Zaxnet and more channels should I need them. More future proof? More tested? Firmware less buggy? Available now... The smaller formfactor of the Maxx, is, however, very appealing, although I am unsure how big the real – life difference would be (1.5 pounds?). I would love a bag as small, cablefree and neat as possible though, like most people, I guess. (Could I even use the Maxx only on AA – batteries? I don't mind getting many ENELOOPS should it diminsih size/weight) What would you get being me? - Are there any NOMAD owners out there that would rather want a MAXX were they buying today? I realize it is a problem of luxury, but it will be a very large investment for me, and I'd be afraid of the potential bitterness evolving in getting something I'd regret on. PS. Don’t chop my head off, I see many heads are being chopped off here – I am a newbie, only looking for great equipment and advice from users with more knowlegde and experience than myself (and I have done quite a bit of reading:) Fredrik

  12. Hi Members- Before jumping into the Zaxcom family, I wanted to hear your thoughts on the range of Zaxnet on a Nomad without any additional amplification or antennae. Here's the question: Will Zaxnet (without any additional amplification or antennae) have a better range than my old Comtek M-72 to PR-72's? Will it rival my Lectrosonics 50 mw LMa beltpack transmitter in IFB mode running to Lectro R1a's??? Thanks in advance for anyone able to give me a rough comparison.... -Vincent
  13. Just wondering if there is any option some genius has figured out to boost the Zaxnet signal coming out of the Nomad from 50 to 100 mw? I want to start using Erx's as comtek/timecode feeds, but find that it doesn't have nearly as much range as my Lectro IFB system. Also don't want to get the Zaxcom IFB transmitter, that kinda defeats the purpose of Zaxnet. So, possibly a firmware upgrade, or antenna booster? Or is it just not possible? Thanks
  14. Howy just posted 5.0 on the Zaxcom Forum. 5.0 has MP3 suport.
  15. I did some location audio many years ago but have spent most of my career in post. Some of my clients, unhappy with their location audio talked me into getting back in. I'm having fun. I have a bag with an SD302, Lectro UM400 & LMA feeding a Lectro SRa, Comtek 216s. I'm building a bag cart and anticipate 95% of my time will be sitting at the cart. Most of my output goes to a DSLR. I thought I'd upgrade a little and am looking at a 664 vs Nomad 10. If I purchase the Nomad it will be because of size (for the bag) and the network. It looks like a compact, efficient system. Zaxnet is attractive but I don't to want buy new reliability problems. So, I would appreciate any comments on general reliability of the Sound Devices vs. Zaxcom mixer/recorders and Zaxcom vs. Lectrosonics wireless systems. Interested in quick comments as to failure rates and performance on the job. Thanks!
  16. Hey all, I recently had to send my Nomad back to factory for phantom issues and the screen upgrade and since it's returned, I've been having issues with the fader nobs. They're only affecting the output levels. I often work in situations where I'm recording only in unit and not sending any audio out, so having full control on the inputs/card records is particularly important to me. I had just gotten an upgrade code so they changed it from a 4 to a Light at the factory (not sure if that may be relevant). It came back with firmware that kept freezing on me, so I downgraded it to 4.22, factory reset, and still had issues- I reverted to 3.13 (which I never had any issues with), and then tried 4.42, all with factory resets and all with the same issue. I can still adjust individual track gain in the setting menus, but faders are only affecting output levels. My fader assigns are also the way I've always had them, with fader 1 assigned with A to track 1, etc. I have no idea if there's a setting if I'm overlooking, or if something wonky may have happened at the shop. Zaxcom is still closed for an extended holiday, so I'm scrambling to get this figured out before a job on Sunday. I've posted to the Zaxcom forums as well, but any input would be appreciated! -Alison
  17. Just a reminder that if you want to get your Nomad upgraded now is the time to do so. To get the promotional price you have a week left, the current upgrade price is only good through December 31st.
  18. I'll be receiving my Nomad Lite this week and start a show in 2 weeks. I've gone through all the Youtube videos and followed the forums but was hoping to get any tips from guys/gals that are using these machines daily. Quirks, bugs, setups, things to avoid and so on. Thanks in advance.
  19. I'm trying to control the gain of a trx900LT from my Nomad. Not seeing anything in the manual that I might be doing wrong... Nomad and TRX are set to 2404, group 1. Nomad IFB mode is TX. The TRX is displaying "Rx" flag, also, "Jam" and "jammed", but the timecode is not what I see on Nomad (which is set to display and output generated TC). Any ideas what I could check for?
  20. I recently noticed that one of my two block 21 rx's has lost range compared to the other. I tested them simultaneously - both on the same freq with a single um200c tx then with tx off. One rx is picking up more RF than the other (with tx off) as well as more hits at a closer range with the tx on. Any ideas? Other tests? Also the proximity to my Nomad seems to affect the range of my block 21 systems. David
  21. Missed the Zaxcom Nomad Seminar with Jack Norflus back in August? A video of the 3-hour event is now available to view online, complete with a thorough look at the Nomad's hardware, software features, integration into the Zaxcom line of products, and Q&A with the audience. After the Q&A in Part 2, Glenn Sanders unveils the Zaxcom Maxx: an ultra-compact digital mixer with built-in recorder and transmitter. Enjoy! Part 1 Part 2 -Cory
  22. Yes, as if we need yet another thread but given Nomad lite is essentially a 664 so far as inputs and track counts and most of the features. Thought we could do a rough comparison over which one might be for some people over another. I've attached some pictures for size comparisons. Zaxcom's Nomad Lite does have some nice features like NeverClip and their "soft knee compressor" vs. SD's hard limiter. Obviously the size is different. The weight of the Nomad is 3.8 pounds without batteries vs. 4 pounds 12 ounces on the 664. Sound Devices has a good history of reliable machines and easy to use menu structures. Nomad changes the game with the way the unit mixes (eg. 1 gain, 6 faders) but is it something people can make a switch to - yes, people have - but is it a new "standard" when everyone wants more channels and less size?
  23. I am hearing an electronic-sounding noise when moving my Nomad's faders but only when my Oktava Mk012 is connected. Other mics are fine (mkh60, mkh416) I am in communication with Zaxcom about it, but in the mean time I am curious if anyone else has had a problem with this combo? The MK012 was purchased in 2010 from Oktava-online. As such, pins 2 and 3 are switched. This has never caused a problem sound-wise or power-wise. Only power issue was when powering from a Sennheiser buttplug, but adding a phase reversal adapter fixed that. Recording of the noise is attached. Anyone having this problem? TESTS001.WAV
  24. Hello People, I'm looking for suggestions from those familiar with the finer details of Nomad capabilities. I just upgraded to the 12 and believe I have found an unfortunate recording limitation, bummer for me, and you other 12 track users. I am using and 8 channel board in front of the Nomad sending 8 AES channels into Nomad. The way I see it on the input config screen, my only option for 8 channels of AES on the nomad is Input Type 7. With this option selected, it limits my 9-12 card tracks to R1 and R2 only - R3 and R4 are RED (danger danger) because of the input type 7. The option for outputs 1-4 isn't enabled.....yet? Does anyone know of any possible solutions still using the 8 AES inputs? Am I stuck with 6 mic pre's and 6 line level inputs to record 12 separate tracks? Thanks, Jobo
