Hi everyone, Like a lot of you, I've been searching for a modern WAV utility that keeps up with how we actually work, large files, 32-bit float, poly workflows. Wave Agent hasn't seen much development lately, so I ended up building my own with a couple of extra features. After a couple of months of development and some really helpful feedback from early users, I'm happy to share it with the community. Here's what it does: Conform Backup Recordings to Timecode This one is for anyone running a second recorder, belt packs, or a safety rig alongside their primary. Three modes: File-to-file: Trim each backup file to cover exactly the same timecode range as its corresponding primary file; sample-accurate alignment. Custom TC range: Specify a timecode IN and OUT point and extract that window from all selected backup files. Files outside the range are skipped; partial overlaps are trimmed. Replace Track: When a channel in your primary poly file recorded unusable audio, wireless interference, a dropout, a dead receiver, this mode swaps out that specific track with the clean backup audio. The primary file stays intact; only the bad channel is replaced. All three modes include a Normalize to -1 dBFS option. Especially useful for 32-bit float backup recordings captured at very low levels. Original files are never modified. Wave Copilot always writes new output files. Polyphonic File Management Handle WAV files with up to 32 channels. Split any poly WAV into individual mono files with one click, or combine mono files back into a single polyphonic WAV. Drag-and-drop track reordering lets you remap channels before combining. Large File Support (RF64) Read and write WAV files larger than 4GB with full RF64 support. Automatic RF64 detection and creation. 32-bit float support Handles everything from 44.1kHz to 192kHz, 16 to 32-bit float. Batch Metadata Editor Edit Broadcast WAV (bEXT) and iXML metadata across multiple files simultaneously. Update project name, scene, take, track names, notes, and timecode in bulk. Full timecode support with automatic calculation. 32-Track Mixer & Playback Play back any WAV file up to 32 channels simultaneously. Per-channel gain, pan, solo, mute, and phase invert. Pre-fader metering with clip indicators. Waveform display with timecode ruler. Lock your mixer settings and carry them forward to the next file. Useful when reviewing a full day of recordings without reconfiguring your monitoring setup each time. Export Mix bounces your current gain, pan, solo, and mute settings to a new WAV... a quick rough mix without opening a DAW. Format Conversion — Without Losing Metadata Convert sample rates and bit depths, or export to MP3/AAC for client deliverables. Most converters strip your bEXT/iXML and break your timecode on conversion. Wave Copilot preserves all metadata, recalculates timecode correctly for the new sample rate, and embeds ID3 tags in MP3 exports. Professional dithering (TPDF and Lipshitz noise shaping) included. Clipping detection built in. Sound Reports Generate PDF or CSV sound reports. Customizable columns and layout. Save templates for recurring productions. Configure once, reuse every day of the shoot. I don't do it very often, but sometimes I convert BWAV files to mp3 for transcription. I have yet to find mp3 conversion software that will carry over timecode information from BWAV files into the mp3 tags. I know from experience that recording directly to mp3 from a Sound Devices recorder will spread all kinds of useful metadata-like information into mp3 tag fields. Timecode, track names, etc... But doing this after the fact via conversion software would be handy. Now that I've gone Nomad I'm curious to see how the mp3 recording option will handle metadata. Maggot Spanner Software Spanner is a powerful surround channel manager, panner, remapper and folddown plugin for AVID Pro Tools. It is the result of years of personal frustration with the Pro Tools panner and bussing setup and solves many of the common complaints about the surround workflow in Pro Tools. If you ever work in surround you'll appreciate this plugin I'm sure, but if mixing-in-the-box is your thing you're going to see this as a major step forward. True surround panner Functions as an upgrade to the standard surround panner, giving complete, independent control over each channel in a more practical single plugin interface. each input channel is represented as a coloured dot in the panfield which can be used to control 5 key parameters. panning around the 2 dimensional space is taken care of by just 2 parameters, Pan(left-right) and Fad(front-back) so you won't have to wrestle with dozens of unwanted parameters. Up and down-sizes multiple track formats Spanner can upsize or downsize all common track formats to multiple different output formats, allowing you to actually 'pan' an LCR or quad into the 7.0 mix bus or temporarily send a 7.1 stem out of a 5.1 bus for monitoring purposes. Infinitely flexible folddown with Audiosuite support Spanner has complete, continuous control over input gain and channel position and so can function as a down-mixer in whatever configuration you choose. presets are provided for standard folddown types but you always retain control of the details of the down-mix. support for 7.1 to 5.1-or-smaller downmixing is supported for both realtime and offline (Audiosuite) processing, meaning faster-than-realtime folddown is now possible. Pre-fade lfe send The Lfe channel is treated just like any other input channel and can be piped into the main 5 channel panfield independent of it's level to the Lfe output. likewise, any input channel can be sent pre-fade to the Lfe output and removed from the main 5 channel mix if needed. the upshopt of this is that we no longer need dedicated 'sub' tracks to create a signal destined for the Lfe channel, just automate a spanner to send the signal to Lfe only. Panner window follows track selection When using Eucon controllers spanner will follow the currently selected track, just like the default EQ or dynamics. you have the option of calling up a plugin type from the surface and as you navigate around your tracks, Eucon will call up the relevant spanner instance so you can see and work with pans much more quickly than with the default panner. Post-pan meters in mix and edit windows With a spanner inserted, you can quickly and easily see where things have been panned by glancing at the Pro Tools meters. if something has been accidentally panned to the right surround you can see it clearly even with very small track sizes. Double-precision, low CPU overhead Despite it's smoothed parameters and double-precision internal processing, spanner is efficient enough to run on every channel in your session. even modest macs can run hundreds of instances and still have plenty of room for your usual plugin set. Supported track formats input: mono, stereo, LCR, quad, 5.0, 5.1, 7.0, 7.1 output: mono, stereo, LCR, quad, 5.0, 5.1, 7.0, 7.1 audiosuite: stereo, LCR, quad, 5.0, 5.1, 7.0, 7.1 New authorisation system Spanner employs maggot's new authorisation system which is aimed at providing a degree of security to the software while giving the user a fair amount of flexibility. The software can be authorised to the local machine or to any reasonably modern USB thumb-drive which can then be moved to other machines, much like a hardware dongle. 3 authorisations are allocated to each purchase which are described as 1 license and 2 backups authorisations in case of hardware failure. each time an authorisation is made, the internet must be visible in order for maggot to verify the authenticity of the application. Me again. Random thing I'm curious if anyone has experimented with. The Mirror files obviously make a copy of what is recorded first to the primary card. If I go back, and re-name a take, or add a note that the last take was "room tone", but the Nomad has already mirrored the segment (since it does it automatically). I'm assuming that means that the mirror files would then lack the same meta-data as the primary. The work around to this would be to leave mirrored off, until you know there is a break, or a scene change, and that all your meta data is up to date. Just curious
