  1. Hey there fellow soundies! I'm going to be mixing a movie in the US Virgin Islands (specifically St. John) in a month or so. I'll be working by myself most likely, but I'm trying to figure out if there's a way for me to bring my modified Dewalt Tough System cart with me as support. Anyone have any advice as to how to ship these cases and cart? I'm also remembering a hard/soft case that I've seen on JW a lot, but can't remember what the name of it is... It's really used as a make up kit, I think, but definitely have seen them on here as simple, small follow cases. Anyone have any other recommendations for support carts or organization cases that are easy to ship and practical? I have some ideas, but would love to hear from you! Thanks! Steve
  2. Anyone interested in a 10 day trekking/recording trip in the Himalayas? Mid May. I'll plan it. If interested PM or email me. davidlstevens@me.com Goal is to produce scientifically catalogued wildlife recordings for the Macaulay Library. Just to clarify, this is not a job. Just something adventurous to do...burn calories and benefit wildlife research. cheers!
  3. Hi all, Just wondering if anybody on here had any experience with travel type shows, e.g. Parts Unknown, Nat Geo sort of stuff, and how one might go about getting on those crews? I'm relatively new, but have always wanted to work on travel shows and was just wondering if anybody could recommend some proactive steps I could take to work my way there eventually. Thanks! Josh
  4. Hi to all the folks on JWSound. I'm a Vancouver based mixer still in my entry stages, and I'm making a trip out to London at the end of April. For my personal experience and to help me experience the sound department in many different ways, I'd love to meet a mixer from there. I'd love to get together for a beer or coffee. However, I'd really like to see how you run your sets in Europe. Feel free to contact me over this forum, or at DillonBochon@hotmail.com. PS: The drinks are on me!
  5. Hey everyone, Anyone using Nanuk cases? Looks like a great alternative to Pelican. Do you have the foam inserts or padded dividers? cheers
  6. Hello, I originally posted this in Current and am reposting here in Workflow. I am working on a travel show that has me going all over the country only spending a day or two in one area. I am using four channels of WisyCom (470 - 640) wireless for talent, two Sennheiser G3 as hops (mono to two cameras), and Comtek 216's. With all of this wireless, I am trying to find the best practice to coordinate frequencies in multiple locations quickly and efficiently. For the first week out it was a lot of receiver scanning in local hotels the night before the shoot and adjusting accordingly on location the next day but I'm sure that I am not doing the right thing. Any advice that anyone could give me would be hugely appreciated. This amount of wireless is relatively new to me as I only recently was fortunate enough to get the work that could require, and pay for, a large expansion of my kit. Thanks!!

  8. I'm going to be on a show for almost 6 months, alternating travel and shoot days, with flights every week. I was curious what packing solutions are out there. Currently for small travel shows I have a lowepro dslr backpack which I find sufficient for mics, transmitters, cables, tapes etc. and a pelican 1510 for my 552 mixer ( but the 664 is just too big to put it in sideways, which i have now) and a long case for boom and stand. Usually I strip my mixer for travel and always carry-on, but I want to limit the amount of tear downs I have to do.
  9. I thought I would create a worldwide reference for governing bodies and some airlines on their stance with regards to lithium ion batteries. General Advice: Under 100Wh Lithium Battery Regulations Allowed in Carry On Baggage in Equipment or as Spares Allowed on your person No Airline Approval Needed Not allowed in Hold Luggage 100Wh – 160Wh Lithium Battery Regulations Allowed in Carry On Baggage in Equipment or as Spares Allowed on your person Airline Approval Needed Not allowed in Hold Luggage Over 160Wh = Forbidden!!! 10. I'm embarking on a month-long shoot that will take me across the country (twice). Having switched to the Maxx a few months ago, and being vocal about it on here, I'm setting up this thread as a blog of my travels, packing light while sound recording, and running the Maxx for a month straight. Due to the nature of the work I'll be running the recorder for upwards of 12-16 hours a day. I took advantage of the new 2.0 software and made a TA5 to dual XLR cable for the return to act as additional inputs (hardware inputs 5/6). I'll be running a boom and four Sennheiser G3's. I know I know, Sennheisers, but they are what I have to work with and I'll be upgrading to Lectros when I return. Which, if anyone has some 211's in blocks 19-21 for a modest price, I'd love to talk with you in early February. The Maxx is great on batteries, but I'm bringing 3 NP-1's just in case I'm crunched for charging time. Plus some backups Powerex's in the device. And about 40 more AA Nimh's for the G3's. I crammed all of my gear, clothing, and expendables for the month into a Pelican 1650, a Boreas Erawan 50 backpack/duffel, and a K-Tek KBLT35 boom pole case. The K-Tek case is holding my Klassic boom pole, 416 in blimp, and a Tascam DR-40 to use as a plant mic. Thank god for packing cubes. I fly out tomorrow. I'll start posting from the road this weekend. I'm excited to push the Maxx this next month and document how my gear weathers the storm.
  11. Hey all, I will be taking a 6 day trip to Big Bend in Texas and I plan on recording some ambiences while I'm there. I curious what setup will be better, my 552 or my mix pre d/744t combo. i will have 2 schoeps cmc's on a stereo bar of sorts. I will have access to solar charging but I'm concerned about the power hog 744t. I'm really interested in getting some very hi res recordings (Im thinking digital out of the mix pre d and 192k/24b) Does anyone have experience with this sorta setup/recording? Tips/Advice?
  12. Hi All, My basic question: for the frequent flying mixer, do you prefer to break your sound cart and contents down into pelican cases or to use a shock absorbing rack mount case (i.e. SKB)? Details: I'm building a first proper sound cart. I'm drawn to rack-mount carts, as I like the idea of not having to build out the cart often, but open to being talked out of this. I travel for shoots as a bag based mixer an average of two weeks a month, so I'm often flying. I'm in talks to do a feature overseas and need some advice on putting together a traveling cart, but I'll also be mixing independent films in my hometown of Portland, OR. The cart will need to hold: -Zaxcom Nomad -Mix-8 -3x QRX100 + Multiplexer -Shark fins on antenna tree -IFB antenna -2x 7" monitor -Case or drawer for 6 TRX900's and DPA lavs in micro cases and 2 CMC6MK41's -2x booms -Power section (Still working this out, maybe PSC LiFE battery or just NP1's and BDS v4 or Furman, PSC Power max and marine deep cell batteries) -cables, headphones etc. I'm interested in building the cart myself out of 80/20 aluminum extrusions (thanks to Jeff Wexler for that) and have the assistance of a good friend who is a medical cart designer at Moto. Advice from anyone who has build a Chindha style sound cart or rack-mount sound cart that travels well, or has another option would be much appreciated.
  13. I am looking for some advice from anyone in the UK or who has relevant travel experience there. I am traveling as part of a 3 person crew with gear for 5 days later this month. Our producer has us flying in and out of London and taking trains to Cambridge and Liverpool and then back to London. This seems crazy to me. In the US one would rent a minivan for this kind of thing. Any thoughts? Also, Liverpool or Everton?
  14. Hello All! I've been asked to work for a documentary shoot that's happening in Senegal, Dakar to be exact. I've never been to Africa, but have seen the thread about 'mixer going to Africa'. Valuable information indeed. My workflow is going to be two Canon cameras 5d and 7d which i will feed wirelessly with sennheiser systems, and i will record double system on my mixer&recorder combo. (442&680). My biggest gripe is radio frequencies. I have two Micron Explorer 100 systems on UK69 freqs (841-864) and a sennheiser radios that work on similar frequencies for Europe - 830-866) That corresponds to lectro block 33 roughly. Can i safely and reliably use those in Senegal? Also, is it true that i should bathe myself in the ocean so i don't get sick with any of the possible diseases i can get there? My doctor said so, and I was pretty sad to hear that Thanks for all the info around here, really invaluable stuff. B
