  1. Hey everyone, was wondering if anyone has any strategies or go-to ways to deal with the excess cable of a flow-thru XLR. I'm loving working with it, and the flow-thru mitigates a lot of the internal handling noise, but I have yet to find a convenient way to handle the excess slack. I've instead been using my smaller external boom pole for shots that would create more flow-thru cable slack, but it would be nice to have a method to manage it if I don't have time for a boom pole change or I'm running with a smaller kit.
  2. Ive been asked to help give advice (probably free) for some people hosting a bike race here in South Africa. There is the post race gibber and IVs etc. The guy wants 10 (mono prob) outs from the 2 in he is getting (Interviewer and Talent). Ive not done this before but suspect it may be an issue as when I do live stuff and ask for a feed from the desk (even fancy big ones) they (engineers) are always reluctant and outs are often at a premium at big events. Im inclined to make sure we get a great copy of the audio and if the press need good audio they can get it from us after the event (maybe even during). Is there some kind of splitter box to take the stereo out from a Mixing desk and give me 10 mono copies? We dont really want 10 mics in front of the talent hiding him from the camera... Another idea was one transmitter and 10 receivers set to the same channel. There are many ways to skin a cat Whats your way. Essentially its to get the same signal to lots of different press/camera people.
  3. Hello again everyone, I'm brand new to soldering XLR cables, but I have some extra laying around and I want to practice. I opened up a star quad cable and noticed 2 cables for each connection on the xlr plug. I'm trying out soldering a 3 pin female to 5 pin male (for a camera top mic to play the same mono in both stereo tracks). Would i be able to just split these cables up and solder each of the 5 wires (including shield) to the 5 connections on the 5 pin male end? would this effectively send the mono track and split it to both channels on a camera? or will I have to create a connection wire instead? Thanks for the advice!
  4. Hi all, anyone know if there was a source for the lower profile female XLR connectors? Have noticed a few here and there, Loon certainly use them with their cables. I'd love to to wire some up if they're around. cheers http://www.loonaudio...=a815B4B2CC.jpg
  5. XLR 3 pin male to female right angle adapter. ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/XLR-3-pin-male-to-female-right-angle-hard-body-adaptor-Neutrik-Allen-Heath-QU-/161729913044?
  6. I need to make a cable for a Sony WRT-822- Hirose to XLR Male. Can anyone give me the pin wiring for this? Also, if there are any special considerations to take note of when making this cable that would be much appreciated! Thanks!
  7. After doing a show in Canada in the freezing cold and snow, I wanted to find out what the best and easiest way to waterproof an XLR connection is, between two cables. I had 4 PA towers, and that's a lot of XLR breakouts of snakes, as well as 200 foot runs with 2 100' XLR cables that are connected where there was snow and melted snow. Also, it was about -10C when I was setting up, so using e-tape and plastic bags was a time-wasting activity, not to mention annoying because I was wearing snowboard gloves and I had to take them off to peel the e-tape with my fingernail every time I had a new one to do... So, is there a simple way to waterproof 2 XLR connectors? I've been searching and searching, and there isn't really a commercially available product specifically made for XLR connectors, so I've been searching deeper into things I can repurpose for this job - such as bicycle handlebar grips... garden hose couplers... etc. etc. etc. What have you guys done that waterproofs your connections quickly and something you can hopefully do with heavy warm gloves on? Some of the shows I'll be doing in Russia, Canada, Europe... all outdoors and VERY cold... I've looked at Saran wrap, but I'm a little weary of it because of the pollution aspect of it... Thanks in advance!!!
  8. I did a few searches and didnt find this posted or mentioned anywhere else and I just found out about it myself so I apologize upfront if you guys have already heard of these, but I thought they were too cool to not let other know about. The Neutrik NC3FM-C Unisex XLR cable connector: LINK, Video, Buy Pretty cool cable to have in the bag that can be a both M-M, F-F and M-F all at once!
  9. Lately I've been having noise issues with my 416 and my rode blimp, namely the switch-craft connector that connects to the 416. I've had to use snot tape inside and outside the mic to xlr connection and it STILL makes some noise when the pole is moved around a little to hard. HAs anybody had any problems with the Rode Blimp and a 416? It seems to me there is just a bit too much room between them when they are connected. I want to upgrade to a Rycote or a Cinela mount at some point, but for right now this is what I got. Anybody in the same boat?
  10. I've been buying stuff and fluffing up my toolbox with the usual barrels, adapters, cables and connectors. Any secret weapons we should all know about for typical or atypical situations that you're finally ready to talk about? Any 'once in a lifetime' war stories are welcome.
  11. I have to feed two Sony EX-1's with my 442. My question is: Do both 442 outputs (the XLR and the TA3M) work simultaneously? If so, I can just use an adaptor cable for the B camera, right? If not, how can I do this? Thanks for any input you guys can offer. Rachel
