Denielle
Oh, man... I have never gone so quickly from laughing tears to wanting to cry (and back and forth), than from reading this thread.

soundslikejustin
here's something that happened today that made me want to cry I had to do noise reduction on an ADR session. Speaking of which: I once got this: Producer: Hey, we've sent you through the ADR for the film. Me: Uhhh, ok, I though we were recording that next week. Producer: Oh, the actors aren't available then, so we just did it. Me: Right, that's ok. in 5 mins time - I'm on the phone to the Producer. Me: So, this ADR sounds a bit weird, are you sure you sent me the right files? Producer: No they're definitely the right ones, we couldn't get a studio like you said so we just did it inside my car. Is it too noisy? Me: Well, the scene takes place in a open field, but they sound like they're in a car. Producer: You can fix that, right? Me: ....................................... soundslikejustin
That's a good one. I'll use that in future, but his was a long time ago. Thankfully I don't get that many of these types of situations (or phonecalls) anymore. I'm probably "too hard to work with" now... Michael Miramontes
Tell him that's like baking a cake and then asking the chef to take the eggs out. I'm going to steal this one also. Excellent analogy!

We will cover all expenses as well as give you a day rate." me - "cool. What kind of rate are you thinking for me, my boom op, and a utility guy?" Them - "we would need you to boom yourself" me - "is your DP pulling focus, running the slate, and working the camera by himself?" Them - "camera team has 3 people" me - "what is the day rate for me and a boom op" them - "we can offer you 100/day" *click Why do I get so many of these calls!? Jack Pender
This is a response I got after I told the producer that I don't work for free... "f**k soundies are the bane of my production existence." "In fairness to everyone else, I can't pay you for your gear and not others Can you suggest a good soundie who may want to work on the film???" Haven't replied yet... Are Dp's easier to get for free? Boomboom
...IF gear they have, apart from a pile of gels and lens wipes.

Was it "f**k soundies..." or "f**k, [comma] soundies..."? If it was the former I would be very tempted to reply with a "f**k you right back." Well, seeing as how owning a 5D qualifies you as DP to some people, I know of folks who would take that job just to "be the guy in charge" and get to show off their new camera. Rich Reilly
You can fix the car sound issue with After Effects. "In fairness to everyone else, I can't pay you for your gear and not others" Well..as long as the exploitation is evenly distributed, I'm in. Are any of these folks selling you on the idea of the film? Sample of script etc? I can see cutting a great deal if the mission is worthy and the final product stands to be a big feather in the cap. Something that resonates personally. If the impressive credentials and track record are there, you would think funding would follow.

Jim Feeley
" "our dp has an Emmy, our director has been nominated twice" " in what categories ?? Could also be a local Emmy. Nothing against my pals who've won (and deserved) those. But it's not quite the TV equivalent of the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. mikewest
I was thinking about low rates earlier today. I reasoned that medium grade hooker charges $250 for a one hour out call. She may bring a few toys and some wet weather gear (joke implied) She gets xxxxed for and hour and goes back to her pad and can accept another gig A sound guy is asked to do a 10/12 hour out call for $50 She may bring a few toys and some wet weather gear (joke implied) He gets xxxxed for 10/12 hours and goes back to his pad and cannnot accept another gig Puts it in perspective mike
