Hello everyone. I thought it might be a cool networking thing, if all the mixers, boom ops, and post sups etc. if we listed the upcoming tv shows and the networks or the studio.(episodic, 3 camera sitcoms, features films, indie features, reality shows, and documentary projects. and who there crew is.

Jeff got me thinking when he "put his name in the hat" re: he has nothing concrete until nov.(craigslist is not the only site to help fellow mixers??if it helpa at all.) that if we posted what all of us were doing this year. the better for all of the other mixers to day play or give a idea if they might have a chance at second unit etc. just a thought if it does lead to a couple gigs for someone, great. if not, at least we all can see what fellow mixer are doing or have planned.

for example: ( I asked Von's permission & Juan's)

tv show-House

Von Varga- mixer

???- boom op

Juan Cisneros-3rd & 2nd boom

network- fox (nbc produced)

location- fox lot

For me the usual mixed bag of production and post. New indie feature released today: "Colma: The Musical". When you see the new Apple iPhone demos, that's mostly me. Cartoon Network "PROPS" series. Nat Geo "Undercover History" series. Several new docs and commercials going. Not a great year so far, but ok.

Dennis Fuller finished "House" last year with those folks, and is supposed to be back. He's a FANTASTIC boom operator.

I am waiting to hear on a few irons in the fire. I'll let you know.

lots of post so far this year. lots of animation to be more specific. been sound designing a new kids cartoon show since december and will continue on that thru the end of this year. finished sound designing and mixing a few animated shorts and have one coming up. and two animated features that i'm starting this fall. also sound edited a doc that's screening around right now.

production work has been limited to commercial shoots and some doc work. hopefully will be doing some traveling for a doc later this year. this has been an incredibly busy year, i just wish more of it was production work :)

Supervising mixer and audio gear vendor for The Real Housewives of Orange County (three crew show for Bravo shot around Mission Viejo) until mid-August, then I’m free. Usually busy with TV, theatrical docs, day-playing, corporate work, and commercials, but equipped for and seeking more cart-based work (scripted or unscripted).

I am a big fan and avid reader of this forum, Jeff. Thanks for all of your hard work. I know many of you and keep meeting more as the summer progresses.

done work on "Lonely Street" with Jay Mohr and Robert Patrick, Second unit under Dan Monahan,

Hello all,

"Lonely Street" was where I recently met Tom Curley, aka curleysound. I was booming for Dan Monahan.

Dan and I continued together on a series of educational videos for the Air Force, shooting on locations at Fort MacArthur/San Pedro AFB, and at the Space and Missile Command Center at the Los Angeles AFB in El Segundo.

As a never enlisted civilian, I would like to say, the military is quite a different world when lived within their walls.

We were never without escorts below the rank of Technical Sergeant (lots of stripes) and our commander at all times was a colonel from the pentagon. We were asked to never answer questions or speak with anyone on the base, directing ALL inqueries to the colornel. We also signed letters of non disclosure, so I'd tell you more, but then...

Hi All

I've had more reality TV than I can poke a stick at. Finished last year/started this year doing the 2nd Series of the (Australian) Biggest Looser. Big crew with 4 full time soundies. Peter Clark, Chris Lakeman, Frank Harrold and myself. Squeezed a month or so of corporates, Sydney Fashion Week & TVCs in before starting the 2nd Series of Saving Babies, and a spin off show (working title) Kids Hospital. Not so big. 3 soundies. Paul Finlay, Marty Butler and good-self.

Squeezing a week away in Port Douglas (hopefully in the warmth) before starting the 2nd Series of From Here to Maternity (with Antonia Kidman - sister to...) for the Fox Network in Oz. And that takes me to the end of the year when rumour has it there's the 3rd Series of the Biggest Looser.

No real complaints - great crews, tons of great gear. Enough said

BTW - love this forum. Very little background whine. Keep it up

Even though I have never done any of the reality-type shows myself, I would like to know if things are done pretty much the same way in Australia as they are done here in US based productions. I imagine the objectives and the goals for the soundtrack are much the same, and there has to be a lot of similar gear, I am just curious if the work or the approach is different. One of the things that interests me the most is the way in which the reality show style of work is starting to permeate all sorts of other jobs (this is a trend that I personally find quite scary!).

My work in the recent past has been rather varied: Along with some corporate and commercial gigs, I've done an Inside Edition segment, some Dr. Phil footage, playback for several music videos including John Mellencamp's The Americans, a number of things surrounding the Indianapolis 500 including a Good Morning America segment, DVD extra material for a yet-to-be-green-lit Disney movie, the Formula-1 U.S. Grand Prix for Speed & Fox, House Hunters for HG-Net, a home remodeling reality show, some independent film work, and have been wearing several hats in the creation of a series of abuse counseling videos.

I guess that means I can't hold a steady job.

Jeff, I remember something you said sometime back, that you hated the idea of the location sound mixer becoming somebody who "captures" sound on the set. I dislike that trend as well, just putting a wireless on every actor in the scene because it can be done, not because it should be done.

It's happening to a degree with picture as well, where they want to record a raw digital camera feed on-set, then essentially do all the "lighting" (or at least, the fixes for the lighting) in post. Robert Rodriguez' Sin City and his later films are examples of that, all with digital backgrounds neither the cinematographer nor the crew can see during photography.

It's a scary trend.

Completed a new reality series for FOX in March-April "Kitchen Nightmares" with Hell's Kitchen host Gordon Ramsay. Spent most of the spring working on "True Heroes", a series for Discovery channel with the Sony F-900 cameras. An episode of "Surgery Saved my Life" for Discovery, NFL draft party for Ohio State's Ted Ginn Jr., and plenty of breaking news for CBS, NBC, & ABC news organizations. Oh how fun the 2008 Presidential election year will be !!!!!!!!!

Hi All

Pretty sure the method is pretty much the same on Reality shows in Australia as the US. Before starting my first large reality show (the Oz version of Project Green Light in 2005) I spoke to the series producers of the US version to get an idea of how it was done there. That spawned a Lectronics 411a system - group system - where we could mic up to 16 people. There were up to 3 sound recordists on at any time. We each had 4 receivers in our bags - so depending on the situation it was 4 rads or 3 and the boom. We stereo linked to DigiBetas - so it was mixed to two tracks following the action. I was blessed with a great DOP who wanted to wear headphones - to follow the dialogue as a cue for what he should be shooting, and as a safety check on the link (two Lectros).

As the shows have 'gotten bigger' - and the gear has appeared - requirements (often at the request of network EPs) have grown. It's now de rigueur to be asked to mic absolutely everyone up. (Even when there is a substantial risk to the mic heads and the transmitters - the production company wears the risk. ) It's all still in the bag - a new bigger bag. Four 411a receivers and the boom option - all iso'd to a 744T (cameras etc on Lockit boxes). A rough mix is linked by Zaxcom to the DigiBetas. Because it's all descrete mic'd the producers all want IFB feeds so they get a head start on writing their interview questions. There are usually 3 or 4 main unit sound recordists. On the bigger set ups this blows out to 7 or 8. The additional units run their own systems separate from the Lectro block system.

I'd love to get feedback from anyone in the US doing these kinds of shows to see what they're doing in these situations.

There's certainly very little mixing - the focus is on capturing everything as cleanly as we can.

My current job ('Saving Babies') is a crazy alternative. Because we are following a number of surgical/medical cases at one time in Sydney's main maternity hospital I have had to fall back to booming almost everything. It's been great challenge - really noisy, modern live hospital rooms. No time to be putting and taking off radio mics. I only run rads in the operating room where it's an absolute necessity - sterile area etc. I've come to love the Sanken CS-1 & CS-3.

chris,

good to hear from you. do you use graham hicks audio shop? you sound like you have the set up down, it is pretty much the same over here. as far as renting the gear and consulting with the audio supervisors I have noticed more tracks are needed recentley. the 8-10 track cantaar & deva have been requested, do to the high track count for simo recording and the option to have a "mobile" base camp or control room.

my buddy is currently working on a show, where he is in the center of the house or big ranch style house on a 4 camera shoot (only 2 -mixers, he fought for 4 mixers but to no avail) and he has the other mixer following A cam for the more meaty stuff. with 4 rf's & a sd 442,744t kit,

hops back to him. while he is monitoring 3 other cameras bieng sent to him, all the "talent" are wired so they are free to walk around the ranch and stir up trouble while my buddy is in the middle of it all with his deva recording all iso channels. I gave him extra int. 100g hd (for the deva) and he is xfering to a external hd for post.

good luck down there at wallaby way, sydney
