Be careful with the trancend 32gb 133X.

Something might have changed in the electronics.

My friends back home are having nothing but issues with new cards.

It might be the batch that goes to Europe but still check before you work.

32GB Transcend 133x cards are about 40 bucks on Amazon. I'd recommend stocking some of those.

I had an issue like this, but worse. Pitch shift and all. TC stuff. Send it back to Zax - they replaced my DSP board.

Thanks azw,

your DSP replacement was covered under warranty?

Hi,

I just picked up a Zaxcom Maxx. It's possibly a very early version and is listed as a Maxx2 on the About Maxx menu page. I have v2.30 loaded and its showing AES and 6 inputs but only displaying 2 card outputs in the menu. As far as I know it is capable of 6 ISOs and a Stereo Mix but those card tracks are not there in the menu. Anyone know if this needs a hardware upgrade for the extra card tracks or can I upgrade another way or am I being a dummy and missing something in the menu???

Only got the unit powered up this afternoon so forgive me if I am asking a silly question and yes I am Reading TFM.

Hi Rado,

Have attached some pictures. The AES is not installed as far as I know but the AES v faders appear and can be set up via the PFL buttons. The input 5 and 6 appear and I have set up with vFader but not tested as I haven t made a TA5 F up yet.

The unit is a Maxx2 with a serial number 1003# .

Pics of the card screens attached. Very slowly getting to know its way of working.

I sent Zaxcom an email via their contacts page. Probably do need an upgrade code. I m sure I read on the variuos forums that the Maxx went to 6ch Rec and AES as standard from Sept 2013 but I might have misunderstood the posts but when I looked at the latest manual the Maxx had full ISO record and AES just not the TX or Zaxnet. Some Zaxnet is there on 2.30 but I believe the TX is a board install.

I posted as Zaxcom is probably closed weekends. Thought I might get a head start before work comes in...

When it was first released there were two hardware options. AES board and transmitter.

The recording track count is just a software limitation as far as I know. Almost as soon as the 633 was released Zax made 8 channel recording standard on all versions of Maxx.

I think most Maxx's out in the wild now have the AES board but not always the transmitter.

I could be wrong on the AES board being a separate hardware option.

Have fun, it's a nice little recorder. Always reset factory defaults after a firmware upgrade and re-build r settings manually.

It's been very reliable for me.

I've been told by Zaxcom that 8trk and AES are both code upgrades for my Maxx2. I 'm waiting for costs. The TX option is a hardware install and a trip to the UK dealer. Didn't expect such a speedy response especially at the weekend so fair play to the Zaxcom guys. Waiting on UK dealer response now which will be during business hours.

The price of the upgrades might be cost prohibitive for me though.  I read that on one of the French sound forums the price was 300-400Euro for each code. So potentially an extra 800Euro. We will see.

I was offered a 633 or the Maxx for a similar price (both used). I chose the Maxx for the extra mic channel input and the ability to use the menu knob as a fader (Vfader) as well as never clip. The 633 has 10trks and flexible power options plus the 2 card record as it stands without options or upgrades necessary. Though I might be complaining about not having that extra mic channel I do already have a 302 which would go with the 633.

The cost of the codes might put the Maxx total price way above the used 633 which would be a shame as I'm starting to like the Maxx.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Are you sure that Zaxcom won't just provide the codes free of charge since the Maxx 2 doesn't exist anymore and the 8ch version is now the standard version?

Seriously, if they won't provide the unlock codes without another 800eu I would just return it and get the 633. Sounds like whoever sold it to you didn't fully disclose the limited track count.

My 2 cents on this situation..

The Maxx was advertised as having the AES by the vendor. It doesn t have that onboard as far as I can tell. The AES appears in the vFader page but none of the outputs appear on the routing. I can see the AES on the bus menu inputs but then there are no outs to either card tracks or bus outs.  I asked the vendor if any options fitted ie TX but they said no. They were not upfront about the 2 track record or missing AES given the Maxx came with 8trk and AES as standard for the past 3 years.

This is a unit being bought used, so I see the manufacturer's responsibilities to it as being voluntary, unless it was defective to begin with.  The OP's beef should be with the people who sold him the used recorder and weren't up front about what features were included.  At this point I'd be wondering what else they might not have told you about the thing, and consider returning it.

I contacted the vendor about the issues. Don t know about the rest of the world but in the UK we are covered by internet trading laws. If the item isnt exactly as described or there are omissions in the description then you are allowed to return and get your money back.

They were still insisting it has AES and 4 trk recording which it doesnt but are being resonable about a discount or a return. Zazcom however haven t replied to a request for codes. Zaxcom initially were super A quick with their response and I was very impressed but I ve been passed on to another department who have not replied after 3 days. Good job I m not on set and need extra features in a rush 😉. So as far as the codes I m on a 'to do' list on someones mailbox.

Phillip I definately take your comments onboard. I have not had the chance to test the rest of the Maxx fully. If the vendor was unsure about other things then what else is wrong.....

I missed out on the 633 as it was snapped up while I was messing about sorting this.

$395 for multitrack and $395 for AES but I ve now been told that the AES needs a board which contradicts the earlier info supplied.  $1195 for TX option.

Maxx going back to vendor.

Thanks for your help guys.

i really wonder why so much confusion on something that should have been straightforward... oh man!

it is like a car dealer who knows nothing about what the 'different' variants cost?

  • 2 weeks later...

I negotiated a major discount with the seller who was at one point still insisting the unit had AES and 4 track record and holding out for the full price.  I wanted all the upgrade costs, shipping fees, any workshop time and my replacement hire covered. I wanted any 'suprises' covered. The vendor had another unit to sell and got within $50 of my discounted price once he put the correct info in his advert. So I thought that my discount was fair.

I now have the Maxx with AES board fitted and have upgraded the 2 tracks to 8 tracks and will replace the internal TC battery next week as the Maxx is 3 yrs old and I suspect its never been done. Seems to hold TC on power cycle though.

Dealing with Zaxcom by email and Skype was all good. No issues. Parts arrived into UK very quickly once the order was set into process.  Fitted 2 days later. All seem to be working OK. Was going to test AES into a clients PMW Xdcam camera today but I havent had a chance to solder the cables.

Thanks also for the help and advice from jwsound forum users.
