whatalob
the title says it all. They came separate and I just can't get my head around it. The plug won't fit through the hole, the release thingie of the XLR gets stuck just before it can fit through. Any ideas?

pindrop
Drop the special male xlr barrel in from the top, sometimes it can be slightly sticky but a little gentle persuasion with a short stick will get it going, and drop it out the base of the pole, fit the base plug tight (threaded) turn whole assembly on cable with XLR anti-clockwise (viewed looking at bottom of pole) a few turns to counter screwing the base plug in, and screw base plug in (clockwise) - hope that helps. I've got several VDB poles which I regularly change the internal cable from stereo to mono and back.
whatalob
oh my, that was easy. I 'm embarrassed for not thinking straight. Thanks for the help.
whatalob
It also feels a lot heavier than I expected. I haven't used an internal cable before. Would I be better off using an external with this pole in terms of weight?

Would I be better off using an external with this pole in terms of weight? Yes but for me the advantage of speed far outweighs the dis-advantage of a little more weight. What I also like about the VDB's for speed is that the collar for each section can be set such that it can be pulled out without touching the collar but has sufficient friction to stop a 416 size mic with full windbasket and windjammer from twisting. The combination of internal cable and precise friction setting makes it the, or one of the, fastest boom poles available.
jlempen
^ I totally agree! I use the small and medium VdBs for doc work because you can just pull it out and roll. However, with this method, you'll need to clean the pole quite often.

Yes but I've found my my most heavily used one (12' for years) has now gone beyond cleaning and has started shedding carbon fibre and makes my hands black! I've started putting Pledge polish on it which helps for a while but I'm too mean to get a new one until it stops working.....
