old school
Marvin was the coolest, most well loved cat to ever swing a boom pole. My heart is sad that he is gone, but full of happiness that I got to know him. My condolences to his family and friends. RIP Marvin. CrewC His credits as a soundman. Jeff Wexler
This is very sad news. Marvin was such a fine human being, always a pleasure to be around him, even for a brief conversation. Marvin had boomed for me only a few times, the odd days that Don couldn't do, a commercial here and there... I will really miss him.
Richard Lightstone, CAS
I am terribly saddened by the loss of Marvin Lewis. Truly one of the great Boom Operators. My condolences to his entire family. Marv and Willie Burton were a team for decades.
Russell Williams
Marvin and Willie were two of the first guys to show me the ropes out in L.A. when I arrived in 1979. It was Marvelous Marv who explained that the job always came first but to be successful you also have to be a team player too. Later in my career, Marvin worked with me here and there if Albert (RIP) Tennyson (RIP) or Mike Patillo was not available. He was a virtuoso with the pole, and would never give up on the shot. His smile and laughter always made the long days or nights shorter. He will truly be missed. RW

John Coffey
I have had the pleasure of knowing Marvin for many years in a very personal way. A great, kind, warm funny man he was, but there was more to his story. A lot of people don't know the history of Local 695 so let me tell you about this aspect of Marvin: It's hard to imagine now, but back when Marvin got in the local, the unions were not exactly welcoming blacks into them. The Justice Department finally came down hard and forced the issue. At the time, my Dad, Jack Coffey, newly ran Local 695. He was not happy about the level of prejudice that existed then. It was very important to him that the first blacks in the local carry themselves well and have thick skin. Willie Burton was the first major black sound mixer and Marvin was his boom operator. They were first ones in as the union opened up to everyone. My Dad always said that they couldn't have handled the situation better than Jackie Robinson himself. He was always proud of their accomplishments as they went on to work on and receive awards for many big films. Marvin will be missed by all of us. BlewisBoom
I just want to thank each and everyone of you for showing and share the true value of what my granddad stood for and who he was... This really shows me what shoes I have to fill to carry on his legacy and how no matter the situation if you keep tuff skin and carry your self well at all times (which was two thing my granddad was very big on) you can go and will achieve what ever you set your heart to!... we still to this day miss him like it just happen there's no easy way to not miss a man so great!
