That second video with the Belgian guy made me a bit angry over one thing;

Shotguns do NOT cancel out reverberation. It just helps a little bit. Saying stuff like that is a catalyst for people to say "hey why doesn't it sound good? I AM using a shotgun!"

No I don't mean it like that obviously. I just get a little bit... disappointed every time I see someone try and make good, explanatory and ambitious videos about sound, and they make it "simple"... Just recently there was a thread with a rant from a person stating that they wished sound was "easier". These people are the ones following every bit of "easy" advise from anyone in the know. Here we have a Sennheiser representative saying "A shotgun mic will cancel reverberation". When he could have said "A shotgun mic will sometimes diminish reverberation".

You know what?

Your famous words "it depends" would have been perfect in that video... or maybe... i dunno.. it depends...

I'd say sometimes it can make it worse due to phase issues with the interference tube design. This is definitely a case of "it depends."

Well isn't it so that a shotgun could cancel out some reverberation if it arrived at the interference slots at the same time, but due to the nature of reverberation that just isn't the case - multiple copies of the signal arrive at different times and thus the phasing issues with the reverb. Simple, no?
