rb1138 Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 Hey all, I need some assistance. My CS3e made a pop-pop-pop sound while out on the field. Situation was. Shot on the beach for a few hours. Then went inside car. We shot some stuff with doors open. Then we closed the doors. Then while we're recording some VO and wild lines, I hear some pop-pop-pop. Fast and intermittent. There were just three I think. I would attach a sample, but I can't find where it is. It was a pretty quiet sound. I'm sure it'd be audible though, once amplified enough. Is it preamp motorboating caused by the shift in humidity? Is it RF? I've often gotten a similar sound with the Schoeps, but I figured it was humidity or RF with that mike (it's a T-powered one so I expect it sometimes). Thanks, Sawrab Quote
soundslikejustin Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 I've had a CS3-e give off noise from humidity, but only once (after shooting in drizzling rain for 14 hours). Low frequency burps is the best way to describe what I heard. If it's motorboating, it could be a sudden lack of voltage from the phantom supply. What mixer/recorder are you using? Quote
rb1138 Posted October 6, 2012 Author Report Posted October 6, 2012 I describe it as "motorboating" though I'm not sure what that would sound like. It is as you describe: low frequency burps. My recorder is the R-4 Pro. Quote
Winter Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 Which serial number is your mic? Mics with s/n below 2791 are prone to RF intereference () and also motorboating caused by phantom power supply has been detected on early models (but i don't remember where I've read it...) Quote
Dan Ostroff Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 I remember the SD442 and some Sankens had this issue but found the link below, applies to CUB and CS1. Might be helpful: http://www.sounddevices.com/notes/mixers/oscillation-xfmr-inputs/ Quote
dominiquegreffard Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 Sanken offer cs3-e repair/upgrade service, it takes a while but it will bring back your mic to new. For north america contact plus24 http://www.plus24.net/sanken/dealers.asp Quote

Dan Ostroff Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 Winter - I never had a problem with the 442 and CS3e either. That article was the only place I remembered reading anything about motorboating and Sankens. (null) Quote
Jay Rose Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 I've had it with early AKG modular externally polarized mics (C451 series, etc) in very high humidity. Infrequent pops, not motorboating like a bad cap would cause... I always suspected shorting within the capsule itself. Sttoring the mic with a dessicant helped. Quote

S/N is 1805. I've gotten the RF mod though so hopefully it isn't that.... Sanken offer cs3-e repair/upgrade service, it takes a while but it will bring back your mic to new. For north america contact plus24 http://www.plus24.ne...ken/dealers.asp What are they repairing? Can the motorboating be reduced/neutralized? Otherwise I'll try out Dan Ostroff's methods or a big ol' dessicant. Sawrab Quote

rb1138 Posted October 6, 2012 Author Report Posted October 6, 2012 " What are they repairing? " their products that aren't working properly. Right. I would like to know if it could be fixed locally (if it's some specific modification). I'd rather not ship it to Japan. Being without the CS3e for that long just seems like a nightmare.... That article was the only place I remembered reading anything about motorboating and Sankens. (null) Find it! It's a Glen Trew review written here: http://www.groupsrv....about99080.html He said "It should also be stated that, since the CS3 is an electret, some 48V phantom preamps go into "motorboating" (low freq oscillation) with the CS3. Though some Sound Device preamps have been the most discussed with this issue, it is not limited to them. In fact, the same phenomenon can be created with the robust Cooper 106 mixer" @Srab1138: Which mixer were you using? Quote

rb1138 Posted October 7, 2012 Author Report Posted October 7, 2012 @Srab1138: Which mixer were you using? Don't have a mixer (very unfortunately...but am working on it!). Providing 48V phantom power from my R-4 Pro. Sawrab Quote
Brett Sorensen Posted January 24, 2013 Report Posted January 24, 2013 May be a good idea to see if you can locate the damaged files. I used to lug around a PD-6 (not to say they are comparable) with a headphone jack that went crazy in the humidity. I was on my way to a meltdown, when I realized it was not making it to any of the recordings. Obviously still an issue, but potentially a cheaper solution. Quote
