RPSharman
I know very few details. It's 4 months. Paid? Maybe. How much? Don't know. If you don't know the show, it's months at sea chasing whaling ships with the Sea Shephard organization. It's perilous and intense. I'll try to find out more soon. PTA
I heard that it is meager pay at best. And if it was what I heard, I don't know how they are getting away with it.
greg sextro
There was a thread over on Facebook about this job. Not only did it sound like a low-ish rate it sounded like dangerous conditions.
ccsnd
From what I know about it, the rate is VERY bad and unless chasing whaling ships is your thing it will be VERY uncomfortable. I know many people who volunteer in the Sea Shepherd organization. Some of them very good life long friends. The reports I hear back are not pleasant, but they all knew that going in and were prepared for it.
RPSharman
Yes. This job is for a very specific individual. Which is why they lost someone last minute and are having trouble finding a replacement.
ccsnd
I believe they leave very very soon don't they?
PTA
I really don't understand how anyone would agree to it.
cmassey
I guess if you are dedicated to the mission of the Sea Shepherd and happen to be a soundie, might be a good thing...or young, single, and in it for the experience. But just what are the details?
saadasound
I think they've already set sail and will be making port for refueling after 2 months... When's the next time you'll ever be asked to shoot in Antarctica?

MattinSTL
I've worked for a couple charities... adventure... paying it forward... trying to stash some good karma... and FROM THAT... I've been asked to do some other stuff for those same charities... that was downright scary as hell... and I had to say, "yeah, I'm not doing that". I can't believe a legit(?) national TV show is doing things this way? I understand the charity of anti-whaling, etc. but isn't a production company (presumably making money on the show) behind this? It's not like you're working for the cause... you're working for a production company... or am I missing something?

RPSharman
I know the ship is crewed by volunteers, for the most part, but I expect the TV crew is paid. I don't know why the pay is so low, but given the difficulty they are having finding a sound person for one of the ships, they may discover it to be a problem. I suppose most of the folks involved do it for the adventure and the cause, and the producers likely take full advantage, as producers usually do. Why are we surprised that producers are always trying to get the best result from the least amount of money? It's their job to play that game, and hope they don't get screwed. Our only option is to turn down jobs we don't want, and hope the person they eventually hire will demand more money or fail miserably. But, the reason I am surprised is usually when the conditions are hazardous and the risk to one's personal well-being is extreme, you usually see a raise in rate to compensate for that. Not so here, and it actually seems to be lower than average.
RPSharman
I actually have no idea what the rate is, but I know this for sure, it's not even close to what I'd need in order to take the job. Good cause or not, I expect I'd need another zero on the end of the number to get in the ballpark.
John Steigerwald
Saul Swed has been the sup on the last two seasons of that show with Jeremy Dell'ova mixing 2nd. Says it's the toughest job he's ever enjoyed. New prod company. Pay is crap.

Jon Gilbert
$3000 for 4 months work. Seriously!
MattinSTL
$3000 for 4 months work. Seriously! That is insane... that's as bad as any craigslist crap. Even the salt-water exposure of your gear package ALONE is worth more than that.
MT Groove
At roughly $25/day and you'll probably be working very long days, that's way below minimum wage. Is this even legal?
Jesse Flaitz
$3000 for 4 months work. Seriously! That can't be the real rate... For all the stress, dangerous conditions, hours, gear wear etc. that's not even a good rate for a week!
RPSharman
That doesn't seem right. The gear is provided. So at least you're not trashing your own gear. And I guess another zero wouldn't be enough.
ccsnd
That's the rate I was told.
