Scott Smith
Assuming that the oxide is still intact, many of those early mag masters are incredibly good. The biggest issue is usually base warp, which is difficult to contend with. Scoring mixers in particular hated to see the demise of 35mm mag, which had an dynamic range that was unmatched by 24 track analog. Some of them still ran 6 track along with with multi-track stems. The thicker oxide on film also meant you could really slam the low frequencies, without worrying about over-saturation. There were a number of portable 35mm and 17.5mm mag recorders introduced by both Westrex and RCA in the 1950's. WB and some other studios re-fitted their early optical sound trucks with mag recorders in the early 1950's. --S
